It is a heavy duty reel that only weighs 5 ozs. I have lubed it and comes with a full reel of backing,fly line and tippet. We have a smoke-free home. I can't recall ever having used it.Mainly because I never really had a small trout rod that it paired well with. I am told these were made for Orvis by Hardy.And that wouldn't surprise me,as the quality is simllar. The reel measures 3 inches in diameter and is right hand wind.I believe it can by changed to left hand wind,but I'm not sure how you do it. It has an adjustable drag. Vintage C. F. Orvis 1874 Patent Fly Reel
Orvis 1874 Patent third version fly reel. As noted by the presence of the screw construction rather than riveted and the presence of a screw on oil cap. This reel appears to be all original except for the oil cap. As shown in the photos, the oil cap looks original but it is a replacement part. The reel is straight(not bent) turns freely and the"clicker" mechanism is strong for a reel of this age. The foot of this Orvis reel has been modified very slightly on both ends as shown in the photos. The reel shows wear from usage but it has retained almost all of its original nickel plating.

This nice reel is in perfect. Gently used condition with no flaws except for a few letters of paint loss. It is made by ORVIS and is their BATTENKILL Large Arbor III. There is a paper sticker on the inside of the reel that reads“Wonderline Generation 3 WF6F TROUT” The spool is filled with line. I have not uncoiled it but it appears to be some kind of thin white braided nylon line at the start of the spool and then progresses to a heavier yellow line for the remainder. The reel spins freely in both directions without any hesitation. There are no deep scratches, nicks, dings, warps or other damage to any part of this fine piece. Of sturdy construction from machined bar stock aluminum, and recommended for use with 7 and 8 wt. lines. This is the first version of the DXR, which was made in the U.S.A. allegedly by Lamson. It is similar to a Lamson LP-3, but with the drag system of an Orvis Battenkill 7/8 Disc reel. The reel has a soft click on the retrieve, with a harder click on the outgo(pawl can be easily disengaged for quieter reel operation) It is set up for left hand retrieve, but can be changed to right(flipping over the center gear on the spindle reverses the drag direction) The reel is well used. With ample rock rash along the back rim of the frame. The Orvis emblem is ... moremissing from the back plate. One spool has a shallow rim dent, but it doesn't affect the reel operation. The reel works fine with both spools. I have set the drag range at what I think is the best setting. It is a bit strong at the low end, so not recommended for the lightest tippets. These drag systems can be adjusted for different ranges, and I will include instructions from Orvis, should the buyer not like the current range. One spool is lined with backing and a WF-7-F Scientific Anglers Mastery Steelhead taper line. While the other has backing and a Rio WF-7-F/S Density Compensated Type 3 sink tip line. NOTE: There is one tiny spec of red(paint or ink or something) above the meeting of the letters R and V that measures a fraction of a millimetre and is not easy to spot. This spec is much duller than is highlighted by the camera flash but the spec is also shown quite well in the picture(which can be enlarged) It could possibly come off with a fingernail but I didn't want to risk any unnecessary damage. This auction is for a rare vintage 1978 Orvis CFO II fly reel with extra spool. This CFO is the smaller version with the screw through the spindle. The reel works well. My father was the only owner of this reel. The spools have line stickers ~ Orvis WF4F HGF and Orvis WF5S. I am not sure if this is the actual line that is on there. EARLY VTG ORVIS CFO IV Screw Back Fly Reel W/ SPARE SPOOL England Hardy
This is one of the earliest Hardy made CFO IV's with the screw back spindle. It is in excellent working condition and has one of the nicest. Smoothest clicks that I have ever heard on a reel. When I acquired it, the screw for the spindle was loose, which explains some of the scrapes on the inside of the spool, but I have completely gone over the reel and lubricated it with Hot Sauce. It is now in perfect working order and I will guarantee it or your money back. The spare spool had a tiny piece of the inside lip broken off, I filed the sharp corners so that it would not grab the fly line(shown in last pic) Works perfect. Shipping is $6.50 to the lower 48.
