Here is a very unusual ORVIS BATTENKILL IMPREGNATED FLY ROD. This is an exceptional rod The serial number on both pieces to this 2 piece rod is S-18. I called the ORVIS headquarters in Manchester to help us identify this great rod. They believe the S is a symbol for one of the ORVIS fly fishing schools off of Cape Cod. Mass. They believe it to be pre 1970 This is an 8 1/2 foot rod. Also marked 5 1/8 OZ T B F(9) One eye on the rod end is a little different from the others but the taping to this eye is identical to the taping on the other eyes. Shows very little use wear. The metal end of the handle part of the rod where the tip attaches has a little discoloration from age or wear? It has been in our possession for over 35 years and we have never used it. Gently Used Orvis Clearwater Classic 8 Foot 6 Inch(8'6" 3 weight, 2 piece, Mid-Flex 6.5 fly rod + Winston aluminum rod tube. I purchased this rod in the summer of 2004 from Mad River Outfitters in Columbus, OH. At that time, I also purchased the Winston rod tube because I felt that the black plastic Orvis tube did not provide sufficient protection, plus it looks better than the original tube. This rod has been gently used and well cared for. The only real obvious signs of wear are some darkening of the cork grip(shown in photos) Which is unavoidable. This rod has always been cleaned& dried after use. And has always been stored in the Winston aluminum tube. As can be seen from the photos, it is in excellent cosmetic condition, and aside from the dark grip, looks new. There are no scratches/pits/dings in the reel seat trim or wood ... morespacer, and no scuff/scratches on the blank. All of the guides are perfect. This rod has never been returned to Orvis for service or repair. The Winston aluminum tube is in excellent condition, with no dents, but some of the paint near the end of the tube has been marred/chipped from storage- still looks and works good. ORVIS fly rod co wooden sign hand painted. Listen up. This sign was given to a fly shop in ny in 1970 Xmas exactly. Now there is no maker names on back or front. But in the winter of 1970 a fly shop in westchester co ny got into the fly fishing buss, and this sign came from there store. It has two holes in the side of it for mounting to a wall. It has slight wear some scratches some chipped gold paint etc. it is very cool. The sign was given to the owners by the ORVIS co, this is not some made up sign, the font style is the key to the history. Good luck!

A little background here regarding Orvis. Wesley(Wes) Jordan and the process of impregnating bamboo with resin as an improvement over varnished bamboo rods. Prior to the mid-1940's. Bamboo fly rods were protected with a coating of varnish. These fly rods required lots of maintenance(stripping and reapplication of varnish) due to the cracking and chipping of varnish caused by the natural flexing of the rod's action. Failure to maintain a bamboo fly rod protected with varnish often led to premature aging and rotting of exposed bamboo in affected areas. Wesley Jordan. Wes Jordan worked with the Bakelite Company, who impregnated strips of bamboo at their facility and sent back to Orvis to be glued and assembled into a rod. This process proved to be a failed idea. Determination, trial and error and experimentation, Wes Jordan finally found success with a process of splitting bamboo cane in half, drying and then tempering them over an open gas flame, then splitting them into several strips which were then glued back together with a phenolic resin-based cement.
