There is light paint wear around the rim but very minor. The spare spool was probably used but it sure looks any use would have been very limited. There is no fly line on the spare spool-only backing. The line and backing on the reel is in nice condition-there is a sticker on the spool thats says AIR CEL WF-5-F The Orvis padded reel case is in great shape and the Orvis cloth liner for the spare spool is in fine shape-the Orvis lettering is fading quite a bit on the cloth. Vintage Orvis Umpqua Hart Bamboo Fly Reel NR 9 weight Vom Hofe Hardy Style
NO RESERVE AUCTION with Buy it Now You are bidding on a vintage 1970's Orvis Umpqua Reel anti-reverse RIGHT HAND WIND ONLY. This classic look has been taken from Vom Hofe and refined by the Hardy Cascapedia and now shows up in the Orvis reel. Perfect for your bamboo rod. The reel comes with 200 yds of 20 lb backing and 30 yds of WF9F. I am assuming the line is original. But looks fine to use as is. I have some research that this was built by Hart for Orvis, and that there were only 500 made, however, I can not confirm the 500 number. I am assuming that is where the number U302 came from Umpqua number 302 of 500. I have attached the Fireside Angler catalogue picture that describes and depicts this reel. It was sold in the 70's for $190 and the block leather case alone is worth at least $100 now. Also included are 2 spare cork drag ... morewashers(1 now damaged see note in bold below) however the two that are in the reel are fine like new. This reel is truly like new inside and out. Only thing I can see wrong is some marking on the inside of the leather case and a small nick near the U on the reel seat(See pictures) The nick may have occurred at the factory, I don't know. I was asked about the dimensions of the reel today. The diameter of the reel is 3 3/8" and the width of the spool between the end plates(without taking it apart) is 1 1/4" I am so mad at my self. After taking measurements and putting the reel back in the case. The reel foot hit one of the cork washers and snapped it in two. I thought I should tell everyone. The drag on the reel is awesome from free spin to"I can barely pull it out. I would consider taking this reel to fight large trout. Salmon, strippers, bonefish, whatever. On the back there is an engraved brass plate with"C. F. ORVIS, MAKER, MANCHESTER, VT. PATENTED MAY 12th, 1874" From the Internet: In 1874 Orvis received a patent on a new design in fly reels. Patent Number 150.883 is now regarded as a milestone in American fishing tackle history. The 1874 reel was in some ways a major break with previous reel design. Its spool was narrow, quite unlike most fly reels then in use. The perforations on the side plates, which lightened the reel considerably, permitted air circulation through the line when it was on the spool. As the patent claimed, A current of air is continually forcing itself through the wound-up line, ... moreand all mildew and rot thereby avoided, as under these circumstances the line soon becomes thoroughly dried. Actually. Neither the narrow spool nor the line ventilation were new What was new was mounting the narrow spool upright in the traditional reel position, as modern fly reels are mounted. In that combination of shape, ventilation, and position, the Orvis reel of 1874 was truly the forefather of most modern fly reels. The reel was first offered in the Trout model, for $2.50 with black walnut case. This first model did not have a click. This reel has the click. It also has the black walnut box. I believe this would be the trout reel. The click was added in mid 1875. The reel was produced up to about 1920. Although the box may have only been included with the earlier models. Based on the cutout in the wood box, the crank handle would have been about 1-3/16" long. This reel will hold line weights of 3-5 with 5 being the most common and best suited weight. The reel is in ok shape as is the spool. I will say that the extra spool is missing the counter balance but the screw is in a plastic bag that will come with the reel. If one wanted one could make a counter balance and use the screw. All components of the reel work as they should. The finish has scratches and chips in the frame. This will not hinder performance but something you should know. The logo has worn off the face of the reel as well with only remnants left. Overall this is a great large arbor reel that has been around for a long time.
