Vintage Pflueger Medalist Fly Rod 8 1/2" 8.5 ft Fiberglass 1970's or 80's
Nice vintage fly rod. I believe this Pflueger Medalist Rod is from the 70's or 80's. It belonged to my wife's grandfather. So I know it is old. It is made of fiberglass and still has the original case with the Pflueger and store label on it. This rod is in excellent shape and was quite expensive when it was new. The retail price still shows faintly on the store label- it sold new for $30 which was quite a bit of money back in 1970. I don't really know a lot about fly fishing or fly rods so please look at my pictures closely. I have to charge a little more than I like for shipping because this 2 section rod ships in a tube over 4 feet long.

Pflueger Medalist reel. Model 1492 DA, NEW, with an extra spool. This circa 1972 2 7/8” x 7/8” reel has the fixed click, the amber winding knob and the square line guard. This“Dual Action” RHW reel was made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and it has an extra spring and pawl on the inside. The extra spool, as well as the reel itself, has never been used. They come in the correct Pflueger boxes that are complete with no tears in either of them, the larger of which holds the correct warrantee and instruction papers. I feel sure this is the smallest Medalist reel sold commercially.

Old school PFLUEGER MEDALIST MODEL"1494 CJ" FLY REEL, still in very good overall condition, complete with 150 yards of#20 white nylon backing, composed of removeable spool within frame of about 3 1/4" in diameter, and having a width of approx. 1 1/4" from outside to outside of the spool end cover across to bearing bulge at center of skeletonized exterior frame sideplate. Diminutive Pflueger Medalist#1494 CJ Fly Reel is probably best suited to Trout or Pan Fish species, possibly small Bass even, with either a 4WT or 5WT floating fly line we'd guess, depending upon your skill level with a Fly Fishing Rod& Reel of course.See Photos) This Pflueger Medalist Reel features a dial drag knob on frame sideplate at back end for convenient access with either hand. As well as a 1 1/8" rotating finger ... moregrip handle for smooth line retrieval, and there is a matching bearing cover at center of the spool as well, with all three of these small parts composed of ivory/ cream colored plastic, typical of the era. Small screws are of chromed steel, as is the reel foot, pillars, and line guard. The chromed, spool release button seen on the white"Pflueger Medalist" marked cover plate is pushed inward to release the spool from the central arbor as you'd expect. Spooled with abouut 150 yards of white nylon backing. Long on quality for the money, these now classic Pflueger Medalist Fly Reels are still in use by many anglers, and are widely respected across the board by afficionados. This one appears to have been acquired too late in life to have been put to much angling use, though freckling of the black paint on spool& backplate shows it to have been lightly used, though certainly well cared for over the years. but that's about it! The spare spool is also in excellent condition with only minimal wear on the inner surface where it interfaces with the reel frame. The wear consisits only of areas of worn off paint. The cork handle is also in excellent condition. The Length is 8' 6" The model number is GFY 85-67. The guy i bought this from had only used them 2 or 3 times.
