1851 Note: Alfred Redington. Augusta, Maine to Col. J[D. Brodhead, Boston. Cover portion has"Augusta 20 Mar 5 Me. postmark. Its addressed to" Col. J.D. Brodhead Boston" Recipient is difficult to identify unless Redington has used the wrong initial. The only person in the Boston City Directory of 1850 who is close is Daniel Dodge Brodhead. Certain facts seems to point to him 1) He was addressed as Colonel; 2) He was a broker and Redington is coming to him with business information and 3) Brodhead's Papers are in the Library of Congress and one of his correspondents is Alfred Redington. Daniel Dodge Brodhead(1802-1885) was born in Vermont and in 1830 was appointed Naval Agent at Boston by Andrew Jackson. He resigned in 1838 and spent the rest of his long business career as a broker in Boston. He was born in Vassalborough[now Vassalboro, Maine] Massachusetts, District of Maine and at age 20 removed to Augusta, Maine and for many years identified with that future capital city. He established a store but in 1829 moved to Magnolia, Florida Territory just inland from St. Marks on the Gulf coast. This was a town building venture of some Maine men, including his business partner[see#7 of drawing of town from internet] but he soon returned north and within a decade the town failed and is now a"ghost" Redington now entered the dry goods business but sold out in 1835 to enter the real estate business based on the building of the Kennebec Dam. For a long time, the citizens of Augusta had considered a dam on the adjacent Kennebec River to allow them to join the Industrial Revolution. This rod was custom built by John Sweeney. Who ran the Redington Factory sales store. When Redington was located in Stuart, Florida before it was bought by Sage and moved to Washington, they had so many people walking into the Redington Factory wanting rods that the put a retail shop up front. John Sweeney who was one of their advisors and go to guy ran the store. He custom built this rod for a friend of his who never used it. The rod has a lot of detail and beautiful wraps. Full well and salt water friendly. It is like new, never fished. This rod is a 8 foot 6 inch, two piece, 6 weight. This rod was built on a Shakari of Oklahoma blank and finished with all Redington components. This medium action(Orvis would call it a midflex) 6 weight easily casts 55-65 feet with a 7 weight and 65-75 feet with a 6 weight. Very friendly rod.
