Christian Ross, a resident of Birmingham area, south of the Monongahela, in Pittsburgh, enrolled as a sergeant of Company F of the 74th Infantry. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on July 6, 1862 and to 1st Lieutenant on February 10, 1863. He resigned on March 26 of the same year. The next year, when the 5th Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery was being recruited, a company of that regiment was recruited in the Birmingham area. Christian Ross became its Captain, serving from September 8, 1864 until the regiment was mustered out on June 30, 1865. Ross was a member of the United German Evangelical Protestant Church of Birmingham(now the Birmingham United Church of Christ) ... moreHe later left Pittsburgh and died in New Jersey. Towle Windsor from 1880 is a plain handled pattern that is sometimes found with hand engraving. This engraving was usually done by an expert silversmith/engraver at a retailer's shop. The forks offered here have the retailer's mark of Ross Bros. which was most likely a jeweler's shop. The luncheon knife and luncheon fork came to be for a variety of possible reasons. Different people have different theories about the origin of these place pieces. Some say that the luncheon knife and fork are smaller than the ... moredinner knife and fork because they tended to be used by women, who have smaller hands, at luncheon parties. Others argue that by using one set of knives and forks for lunch, the other set could be used at dinner, and the washing up could be done only once at the end of the day. I suspect that the luncheon pieces were made as part of the 19th century pride of ownership, particularly among the middle class. Having many different pieces of silverware for many different uses was a sign that one had"arrived" socially and monetarily. Manufacturers could, with machine technology, turn out an astounding variety, not only of patterns, but of place and serving pieces. Today, the luncheon pieces are a fun way of enjoying the elegance of the past. In some early patterns where salad forks are scarce or non-existent, the luncheon fork is a good substitute. A friend who has arthritis in her hands tells me that luncheon pieces are more comfortable to hold and use than the larger dinner pieces. This is a Ross brand Xylophone with a matching case and metal base stand. The case has some dirt and mildew stains on it as seen in the photo and has a mildew odor to it. This listing is for an authentic vintage antique collector's sample of barbed wire fencing. This wire features two different patented barbs. Fist barb is Noble G. Ross patent. Dated June 10, 1879. Second patent is a Milton C. Shinn patent, dated March 1, 1881. This wire is called"Ross' Four-Point Barb and Shinn's Locked Four Point Combination Barbs. ref. Hagemeier No listing) This wire features two twisted together line wires. Ross Barbs are four pointed made from two round barbing wires. The end of one barbing wire is inserted between line wires, and rest of barbing wires are wrapped together around both line wires. The Shinn Barb is made by wrapping two barbing wires together around one line wire, and then twisting two of the points together. This wire also features a one line factory splice. Wire sample is 18-1/2" ... morein length. It shows some age and use wear, with moderate to heavy pitting. There are three barbs, well spaced, and cut is well centered. There is some bending of points, but no broken or missing points. Wire is in good used condition. To facilitate multiple purchases. The photographs may not show the exact wire sample mailed. At the bottom right of the front of the card it says, Primary Election Aug. 2nd, 1910" The card shows some wear, and is missing its stamp. It is 48 pages long and consists of a selection of 47 Marches. Airs, Strathspeys, Reels. The copyright date is 1942 and a sticker on the front cover shows a price of 6 shillings. It was purchased probably in the 1960's or 1970's. The book has a soft cover and measures 10 by 7 inches. Condition This book shows almost no signs of use. It is yellowing with age. There is a small area of surface loss in the inside cover where a sticker was removed(see photo 5) There are no other marks. Tears, creases, or stains.
