DUNCAN ROSS BURNISHED TERRA-SIGILLATA BOWL, REKNOWN ENGLISH CERAMIST, MINT CDN.
This is an incredibly stunning bowl by world reknown ceramist DUNCAN ROSS. Of Surrey, England. Using only clay and smoke, ROSS handcrafts burnished terra-sigillata ceramics. His work is highly collectible and included in the collections of museums throughout Europe, and now in museums in the United States. His work is wheel-thrown and burnished using many layers of a fine terra-sigillata slip with resist and inlay decoration. The colors are achieved by smoke firing, and the decoration is developed from many sources including textiles and geometric motifs. The pots are placed in sawdust in saggars and have several firings at various temperatures; each firing suggesting the next stage. This bowl is a wonderful example of his work; I purchased it directly from Mr. Ross in 2002. And it has been carefully displayed behind glass ever since. The ... morebowl is 7 inches in diameter and 6 inches tall. His firing process gives the pot a remarkably beautiful surface glow; the feel is that of fine porcelain. This vintage set of Betsy Ross Stainless Steel Flatware with Cherry Red Bakelite handles is in exceptionally nice condition. The set includes six matched place settings plus a sugar spoon. Butter knife, and storage box. We do not have the original box. For the six place settings, each table knife carries the Betsy Ross Logo& Markings(see Photo#3) Photo#4 exhibits the Stainless Steel markings found on the other flatware. The six place settings have been very gently used and are in extremely nice condition. Please note that the knife handles have exactly the same pattern on both sides, while the spoons and forks have a matching pattern on the front side and are flat on the backside(please see Photos# 5, 6, 7, 8 for close up front& back views of a place setting) One of the teaspoons has a small dark line on the backside of the handle(see ... morePhoto#9) otherwise, the handles of all of the pieces are in GREAT condition. One of the tablespoons has a line across the face of the utensil(see Photo#10) The six place settings are all matching and are in exceptionally nice condition. The additional sugar spoon and butter knife also have the cherry red Bakelite handles(see Photo#11) However, these handles are flat on both the front& back sides and do not exactly match the handles of the six place settings. The handles of the sugar spoon and butter knife are in very nice condition with no lines or cracks. This plate features a pewter base with a smaller ceramic plate laid into the middle. The picture depicts Betty Ross and the making of the first Stars and Stripes American Flag. The picture plate is in Very Good condition. No scratches or faded picture. The pewter plate has some spots of wear along the outside edge. In and around the letters could also use a good cleaning. This is Pewter not exactly a precious metal but this plate is definitely one that can reach a high gloss with a good polish. The plate is about 10 1/2" wide. Up for your consideration an antique nautical Ross London 1917 England brass Telescope. This is a top quality five draw telescope with sunshade and lens cap measuring seventeen and one half inches total when open. There are no dents or dings. This telescope is in excellent working condition and has been tested. The wooden box is also in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. There are some minor scratches where the opening latch has scratched the wood when opened. The original brass Ross London 1917 plate is still attached to the top. It contains two pictures, one of him in his Confederate Uniform and the other when he was an old man. Edward Barker Ross. 1840- 1911, of Montgomery Co, TN, enlisted in 1861 to Company K, 3rd Kentucky Infantry. He was 3rd Lt. in Capt. Barnett's Company and fought at Shiloh and Vicksburg. Under Gen. Grierson in April 1863, they made their way from Tennessee to Baton Rouge. His Company covered the retreat of Gregg's Brigade at Raymond, Miss.
