Custom Dan Craft Ultra Light 0-weight Fly Rod w/ JA Forbes Reel & Sage Line zero
I hate to do this but I am selling my beloved 0-weight fly rod. The rod is a custom made rod built on a 6 piece Dan Craft Signature IV blank. The rod comes in at 7’6” and the full rod weights less than 2 ounces by itself. The reel is a J. A. Forbes Magnesium fly reel that comes in at 2.2 ounces. The reel is spooled with backing and half of a Sage double taper 0-weight fly line. Only half of the line is spooled to shave off weight and because you will not need to cast this rod over 40’ as it is. This rod is extremely soft. A nice bluegill or small bass bend this rod almost to the handle. The softness of the rod will help protect those delicate tippets. I am selling this rod to make room for new toys and because I rarely fish it. If I had a nice small trout stream at my disposal. I would wear this rod out making the softest of soft dry fly ... morepresentations known to man. It is a pleasure to fish and I may end up kicking myself in a few years for selling this set-up. This reel needs new line as the stuff in it is well over five years old. This reel has been well cared for and kept in the included carrying case when not in use. Fly Tying: I got into tying my own flies a while back. And this case has a lot of supplies for the intermediate crafter. Sage 5400 Fly Fishing Reel and Extra Spool NR
The Sage 5400 reels and spools are machined from solid Aluminum bar stock and have a heavy anodized finish. Thicker than most. They were designed to hold up to saltwater use. The drag system is cork to spool. As you can see the spool is compressed against the cork drag surface through the use of a draw bar and adjustment knob. Nice click both in and out, which is what I want in a reel. I prefer the Sage adjustment knob as well, which has a safety device to stop it from going into the water. There is no screw lock to drop in the rocks when you change spools. The reel is finished with a gold anodized drag knob and a rosewood handle. My reels are set for left hand retrieve, but can go RHW. Rim control feature too. Both reel and spool are vented and have counter-balances. This reel is used but not abused and has been well maintained on as needed ... morebasis. Sage 503L fly reel and 2 spare spools! Preemie, must see, VERY rare!
Up for auction: You are bidding on a very rare reel indeed. This is a Sage 503L reel. But it is the uber-rare“preemie” model. This reel was limited to the 300 reels made, and this reel is serial# 202. The story behind this reel is that Hardy was commissioned by Sage to make the entire run of reels for them(which they did. The 503L was meant to be a 3/4wt reel, but Hardy mistakenly built the outside diameter of the first run of reels to the inside diameter specs. Therefore, on the preemie reel, the OD is around 2.5” or so, as opposed to the intended 2.75” which it later became after the initial run was completed. So, there are only 300 of these in existence, also, since the capacity is so much smaller than intended, think of this as being a 1 or 2wt reel for the most part. This reel also comes with 2 additional spools. A rare find indeed(so ... moreframe and 3 spools total, serial number of 202 goes with the frame. There are lines on all 3 spools, one is a 3wt with a clear intermediate tip, one is a WF-1-F Sage line, and the other undetermined, all lines have been used to varying extent. Reel is in good to very good condition. Reel seat shows little wear other than having been rod mounted, almost no rim rash or scratches to speak of. The 2 spare spools are in near mint condition other than having been lined. For these reasons we’ve conservatively rated it as a 8.5/10(with 10 being“new” condition) But again, to find such a rare reel, in this condition, let alone with 2 spare spools, is indeed quite the find. The reel was made by Hardy in England in the 1980's The reel is set up for right handed retrieve and is ready to use immediately. The reel is super clean smooth and ready to use immediately. The reel is missing the rubber dust cover on the side plate like most of these fly reels. The reel has a Scientific Angler WF-6-F fly line and backing installed that looks nearly new. Sage 8'2" 2wt SPL Center Axis Precisely balanced SPL 282-3/3100 rod reel combo weighs a mere 5.4 oz including line If familiar with the Sage SP. SPL and graphite IV blanks, you know why these rods remain a favorite of many to this day. Buttery smooth operators, SPL means"Smooth Power Light. The entire SPL line was made for only two seasons and gave way to the fast/faster rod craze. Those"in the know" appreciate how this was truly a shame, as these lightweights- in my humble opinion- have yet to be bettered. The 282-3 is not a model often seen for sale and the Center Axis version even more rare. You can be sure there is a reason for this- this particular model is an absolute standout. The SPL Center Axis 282-3 is certainly one of the lightest rod/reel combos you might ever encounter; particularly. For a 8'2" ... morerod, as the entire outfit combined weighs less than many reels alone- 5.4 ounces on my postal scale. And that includes fly line. And, to be sure, you'll be hard-pressed to find a rod/reel outfit so harmoniously balanced, as is trademark of the SPLCAS, and yet another why this rod/reel duo is so highly coveted. This ultralight fishing tool really is a work of art and supreme engineering. And, for those having fished them, it is not hard to understand why, even back in 2000-2001. The 282 version sold for $865.00 USD. This particular Center Axis SPL is in outstanding condition both functionally and aesthetically. Please enlarge the photos to examine in detail. Sage remains, to this day, perhaps the go-to company when it comes to larger-weight freshwater and saltwater sticks. Superb finishing and high-end guides, this rod was ahead of its time and still preffered by many over its top-of-the line successors, be it the Xi series, the Z-Axis or the One. Without question, the 790-4 XP started it all and remains the benchmark for which all others are compared. Beautiful handle and a great grip not requiring monster mitts or paws. This rod"just feels right. And, while there is no mellow tip, here, this rod still provides the finesse that ... moreso many 7-weight rods seem to lack, as the top end of the rod flexes, as a whole, and feels far more balanced to me than, say, a Z-Axis in the same weight and 4pc configuration. Amazing color blank and wraps, this is just a gorgeous big water, big fish fishing tool. Great control and enough flex for some finesse out on the water, if you are looking at big water rods the 790 XP just plain gets it done. Do you like to feel the tip ahead of your cast?
