This a used Sage ZXL 8' 5 wt fly rod and Orvis CFO III fly reel. Both are in excellent working condition and used very lightly. I bought it to fish for bigger fish in medium to large sized streams. Sage 16' Classic Graphite Spey Rod
It's hard to let an old friend go. But life goes on. I built this powerful Sage 3 piece Spey rod from a blank I bought in 1970 from Anglers Workshop in Woodland, Washington. Very few fly fishermen were using two-handed rods back then. It's different now, isn't it? I could reach places other guys only stared at, and boy! did I catch fish! I'm a perfectionist when it comes to building things, and this is a good example. The guides are straight and true with several coats of epoxy on the brown and gold windings. Just in time for bass season! This rod comes from a collection that I am selling right now. Of a guy that has so much gear, that he has me purge a bunch of items once a year. There is no way that one person can use this much stuff in one lifetime! Hence the reason that most of the pieces have barely been used, including this rod. There might be a light scuff or two, but you would be hard pressed to find them. He seals his cork grips, as he did this one, to protect them from body oils, dirt and fish slime. Great Sage Z-Axis 490(9 foot fly rod for 4 wt. line) 2 piece that has the very tip broken off. The rod was given to me a few years ago. I believe it was a demo rod from a shop in Montana, therefore it has no warranty. i think Sage will repair these rods without warranty for $100 or so. A guy(or gal) could epoxy on a new tip-top guide and the rod would probably cast just fine. I haven't got much use for the rod these days and could use a few bucks to help fund the next fishing trip. To the disappointment of many. Sage long ago discontinued its Lightline series. This is one of the few you will find for sale. If you are reading this, you already know how good Lightlines are, and so there is no need for a gushy sales pitch. The rod was built to minimize weight in a rod that is still practical to fish. The cork grip displays some staining from previous handling, and there are a few noteworthy chips, minor gouges, and bit of missing fill to be noted(see pics) While not as bright or as shiny as it once was new, the up-locking anodized aluminum reel seat still looks handsome enough, and functions perfectly too. A close inspection of the rod's glossy blank from tip to butt reveals the expected small usage marks in the typical high traffic areas. But otherwise shows no signs of catastrophic abuse like deep scratches, scores, or penetrating nicks that would in any way suggest the rod's original strength or integrity as compromised. A close review of the rod's guides confirms a faint trace of tarnish and slight hint of rust present around the ceramic rings and the base of a few guide's feet. You are viewing/ bidding on a gently used Sage Fly Rod. The model is the SP line of rods which were developed in the late 1990's as a crossover rod for heavy trout/salmon to saltwater. The rod is the 890 model. Which is 9 foot, 3 piece, for an 8 wt. line. This rod is in near perfect condition with one small nick in the cork from casting with a ring on my finger. The pictures show this chip in the front of the cork handle. This can be easily smoothed out if desired. The rod was use twice; once as a salmon rod in Canada, and once as a bonefish rod in the Bahamas. It casts the line with power and precision. It is a delight to cast. It balances very nicely with any 8-9 wt reel. It will easily handle a 9 wt line. The rod has it's original cloth bag and aluminum tube. The rod is a 2 piece graphite fly rod- 8' 9 inches and rated for 3 weight fly lines. Both rod pieces are of equal length. The rod is marked SAGE- GRAPHITE III 389 LL#3 line 8'9" 2 3/8 oz The rod was a local estate sale find and I have never used the rod. The rods Cork handle NEEDS WORK or REPLACEMENT. See the pictures. The cork seems to have deteriorated a little bit. Also it is pretty soiled and appears to have shrunk a little bit here and there-I have no idea why or how-only that it has. The rod also has one little spot near the top of the cork handle that may be a spot where a piece of cork has come off completely( SEE UP CLOSE PHOTO) ... moreOtherwise the rod is complete and in VERY NICE CONDITION Certainly the fly rod can be repaired or can be fished just as it is. This rod is rare and even more rare when you consider the condition. You are bidding on a Factory Sage SP 590-2 fly rod. The rod is a 9 foot 5 weight. The rod is in good condition with some minor surface marks. Fly rod was owned by one of our customers who decided he wanted a new rod so he traded in his two SP rods. This rod handles a nice presentation with a 6x tippet. The reel seat has no marks on it at all and the wood is perfect. Butt cap has some small scratches. The ferrule have marks on them from assembly. The cork is flawless and has no chips and no cracks. The factory rod tube is included along with the rod sock. Tube does have some scratches on it.
