For sale is a vintage bamboo fly rod made in Bangor. Maine by F. E. Thomas. It is a special 8 feet in length assembled. Butt cap has 365 struck into it. The rod comes with 2 tips as it should. It is in beautiful condition with the only flaw being the butt end cap having some dings as you can see in the photo. The rod comes in the soft bag and hard tube with brass end caps. Early. Pre-1937 F.E. Thomas Special, 3 piece, 2 tip rod has rarely seen cork cap and ring seat, half wells grip, and scarce red silk and black tipped wrap combination, with full intermediate windings. Beautiful Agate stripping guide. And reverse twist snake guides. Mid section on this rod is 3/4" short. And 2nd tip is 2 1/2" short. 1st tip and Butt section are full length. 2nd tip has elongated snake guides and a strut style tip top. But is obviously original. Chances are that this was either one of the very few rods that were actually made with two different tips. Or this tip was made at the Thomas shop as a replacement later on. Either way, the rod is completely original, and a great example of an early Thomas Special. Varnish is in excellent condition. And this rod would be ready to fish. This rod was my grandfathers and he used it very seldom for brook trout in Maine. The rod is in perfect condition. The rod tube is a vintage leather tube. I am not sure of the complete history of this rod, but I know it is a gem. All the ferrules are sound, and guides are perfect. The reelseat is stamped with a"35" and also bears the F.E Thomas Logo. Thomas& Thomas 5WT 2 PC Fly Rod& Reel This is an older ES 865(Emerger Series) Graphite Rod. This series was discontinued by T&T back in 1999. This was rod. Reel and flies were given to me buy the owner to sell and donate the proceeds to Ducks Unlimited. In my opinion it looks like this rod was never used as the reel mounting area shows no marks at all. The cork handle is not hard as shows no discoloration. This rod was hand letter with silver paint after it was built in Turners Falls, MA. Some areas of the paint are gone, but you can still read all the numbers. There is another number on both halves of the rod, 74-25. The reel is RimFly by Cortland. I would say it has been used. As it shows some areas of slight wear. It has line and backing that I would guess is old. Bangor Maine FE Thomas Special Bamboo #9 Fly Fishing Rod 5 Pc Pouch Salmon 15'
This interesting old fishing rod is marked F.E.Thomas Special Bangor. Maine. Also, there is a patent date June 1913. There are 5 pieces plus a large tip carrier part. The five pieces are all 63" long. There are a few missing guides and a few loose wraps but otherwise all looks OK. The tips look unused. The cork has some dings but it is intact. Using three pieces the rod assembles to about 15 feet. The number 9 with a dot under the tail in stamped on the butt end of the rod. See photos for details and other aspects of condition. Thomas & Thomas XL4 9-foot 5-weight 4-piece Fly Rod
This is a Thomas and Thomas graphite XL4 model fly rod manufactured 7 or 8 years ago. It is a"demo" rod that I purchased from a dealer. It has been fished. And the grip shows normal soiling from handling. The rod is unmarred and in pristine condition. The XL4 series was designed as an entry-level rod for T& T. And retailed for around $375. It is a medium to medium-fast 5-weight that is 9 feet long and breaks down to 4 pieces. It has a Western grip and a wood insert in the reel seat. The wraps match the dark blue blank. It comes with the original rod bag and an aluminum after-market rod tube. And both are in"like new" condition. I am offering this rod for sale as the product of a failed romance between my oldest daughter and a young man. He was once thought of as the"one" before his name became unmentionable ... morearound here. Before he was dumped. Thinking I finally had a future son-in-law to train, I gave this rod to him as a Christmas present. Like everything else, he talked a good game about his interest in fishing, but his actions did not follow. Rare Thomas & Edwards Bamboo Fly Rod - Kosmic Winding Check - Empire City Spec.
Rare Thomas& Edwards Bamboo Fly Rod- Empire City"Special Grade" etched into the nickel silver reel seat. Some of the metal parts may have been made by Landman. The winding check is a Kosmic check. I am a member of the annual Catskill Rod Makers Gathering and had an expert friend look at this rod. Thomas& Edwards made production rods for the Empire City brand. This rod is exactly the same model as shown on page 135 of A. J. Campbell's. Classic and Antique Fly Fishing Tackle" Early rod maker John Landman may have had a hand in its construction. This rod dates to about 1898. All metal fittings on the rod are original except for the hook keeper. The cork handle has some hook digs. The bamboo is sound except for a repair on the mid-section. It is a well-executed spliced repair. I have taken this rod fishing and it is ... morea joy to cast. The butt length is 43 inches. The mid section is 40.5 inches and the tip is just under 40 inches. It is a solid rod and will cast a 6 or 7 weight line. The reel seat is a sliding band seat and the guides are all reverse twist except the agate stripping guide. The rod comes in a non-original tube and bag. This rod is an extremely desireable collectible rod- scarce. It also is serviceable and fishes well. This is a Thomas Chub 10 1/2' bamboo fly rod. Comes in the formed wooden case covered by a cloth bag. The rod has the drop ring guides. Two of the rings are missing from the mid section& one tip is missing three rings. The other tip is missing one ring. This rod has been re-finished through the years. All of the male ferrules are spiked. One tip is missing the tip top guide and Both tips appear to be just a 1/4" shorter than the mid and butt sections. The photo's show the condition well. Antique Thomas Chubb fly rod collection - 3 rods - c. 1890-1910
You are bidding on three(3) Thomas H. Chubb fishing rods. Two are fly rods. One is a bait-caster. I estimate that the three rods are at least 100 years old, though I can't prove that. I am most definitely not a antique fly rod expert, or authority. That being said, I have done a fair bit of reading up on Thomas H. Chubb fishing rods during the past few weeks(1888- 1891 Chubb catalogs, antique fly fishing guides, various Google Books internet sources, etc. and I feel pretty confident to date the rods to 1900, plus or minus 10 years. I have also consulted, via the fly fishing forums, with numerous authorities on fly rod identification/appraisal, and the consensus is that it is reasonable to believe the rods were made circa 1900. Though there was no consensus on the exact age of the rods. There was, among the experts, unanimous agreement ... morethat the rods are very nice. A fine collection and suburb example of early Chubb rods. The two lancewood fly rods carry the Chubb logo. On labels, above the real seat. Both the gold-lettered Chubb star trademark label, as well as the red-lettered Chubb label are, in my considered opinion, original to the rods. This opinion is shared by other Chubb aficionados, and some extremely knowledgeable fly rod collectors have expressed their opinion to me that, indeed, the labels are authentic and original. The other Chubb rod. The six-sided bamboo baitcaster, does not carry the Chubb trademark label. This could mean that the rod has been restored(though I don't think it has been) or that a label was simply not applied during the making of the rod, or possibly, that the rod predates 1886, the year that Thomas Chubb designed and introduced his trademark logo. The respective lengths of the 3 rods are as follows: The first lancewood is 3 pieces. Each section 37 1/2" in length. This is a Thomas 8' Special bamboo fly rod. The hangtag is marked Mah. Spec. 8' 3 7/8 oz. This is a three piece rod with the extra tip section. The stripping guide is a dark amber agate. There is I think an invisible wrap on one tip 5/8" below the snake gudie below the tip top guide. I don't see any thread but it is definitely thicker there than on the other tip. The reelseat is the down locking sliding band. The butt cap is stamped with the name: F.E. Thomas Special Bangor. Me. The tube has a paper label talking about the floating rod tube and a small sticker which is from V.L. A Just For Sport. The photo's show the condition well. Excellent Overall Condition! Vintage Trade fly rod 9' restored 3p2t flamed bamboo,tip tube, Edwards? Thomas?
Three piece vintage bamboo fly rod that has been fully restored by John Lyman in the late 90's. All 4 sections are the same length and comes with a tip tube with brass cap. Nice flamed bamboo and 9 ft. in length. This is a real beauty with no damage. Tight glue lines, and agate stripper guide. Additional pictures are available if asked for. Now lets be serious. The cost to restore a rod like this is not cheap. I will stand behind this rod if the winner is not happy. Please check my feed back. The Norwich Fly Rod Co. operated in Huntington. Ma. before John retired in 2005. The rod does not look like a Montague trade rod, but if it is, it's very high end. My best guess is Edwards. But you'll have to be the final judge.

Offered for sale is a Thomas& Thomas HS863. 8' 6" 2-pc, 3 weight fly rod. This rod appears to have seen moderate use. The butt section has numerous scratches but none appear to be deeper than the finish. The tip section is very clean but has one notable blemish on it about 30" down from the tip. T&T THOMAS & THOMAS 9' 5WT 2PC XL905 "Big Creek" FLY ROD
Used but not abused classic Thomas& Thomas 9 foot 5 weight 2 piece fly rod Has"spigot" ferrule with still plenty of gap left for wear. Original rod had black guides that were not high quality and wore groves. I had T&T replace them with hard chrome guides that do not show any signs of wear. Original cork reel seat was replaced with a winston nickel silver downlocking hardware with a cocobolo wood spacer. The spacer has lost its varnish where the reel rested on the reel seat. This could be replaced with a new wood spacer by any competent rod builder. This is a fantastic classic 5 wt fly rod that can really throw some line. It is matched wonderfully with a wf5f rio gold fly line. I would love to keep it but I just don't fish a 5 weight anymore. Please see my feedback. You will be satisfied. Posted with

One is darker than the other and about an inch or less longer than the other. This darker tip section is also a bit less in diameter than the other sections. Honest wear to the varnish on the reel seat. Nickel-silver sliding band reel seat. I've had this rod in my closest for about 12 years and haven't used it, so have decided to sell. This rod has very light tips, so I'm guessing that it work well with a 5 weight DT line. Returns accepted only if I have grossly misdescribed the rod. There is an invisible repair wrap at the base of one tip. Original tube label is approximately 80% complete. I wish the deep blue color came out better in the pictures. This rod is in great shape, with no damage save normal marring. Comes with the factory sleeve and tube. You can see from the serial numbers that it is all original. I received this rod from my best friend, who was the original owner. I kid you not. This rod added over 15 feet to my cast! Very well-cared for by its previous owner and only occasionally fished. This smooth loading, deeper flexing, lightweight yet powerful double-hander naturally shows a few nominal signs of trace cosmetic wear and tear in the expected high traffic areas that one would expect in a rod that's seen rare and infrequent use. As evidenced in the photos. The lower and upper cork grips display a faint hint of light staining from previous handling, but remain overall, pleasantly free from any major chips, gouges, or excessive missing fill. The heavy-barrel, anodized, gunmetal gray down-locking reel seat looks fabulous like it once did new, and still functions perfectly too. A close inspection of the rod's deep blue blank from tip to butt reveals the usual small scuffs and scrapes in the expected areas. But no signs of catastrophic abuse like deep scratches, scores, or penetrating nicks were found that would in any way hint the rod's original strength or integrity as compromised. A close review of the rod's guides reveals no trace of tarnish. Rust, or oxidization present, and no grooving, deformation, or misalignment of any kin

F.E. Thomas Special 9' Bamboo / Cane Fly Rod 1920's
This is a great example of a F.E. Thomas Special 9' Fly Rod in fishable condition. Included is the original cloth bag and Tip Tube. The Tip Tube is as rare and collectable as the rod itself! The rod was repaired and reconditioned by the Thomas Rod Co. a few months back. Below is the email correspondence with Thomas concerning the repair/recondition: Hello. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I did receive the rod. And have found the following: The rod is originally a 9’ rod. When it was new. All sections were exactly the same length. Both tips are short. Having been broken and repaired in the past. 1 tip has a compound fracture. And the ferrule wrap needs to be re-wrapped. The fracture would be re-set and re-glued in its original position. After the glue has dried. The tip would be sanded around the repair, and a clear protective ... morewrap would be wrapped over the entire repair. Once repaired. The tip should be fishable again, but there is no guarantee of that, because there may be a glue failure on either side that can’t be seen. The 2nd tip is fine as is. Other than needing to be cleaned/polished. The mid section is missing 1 guide. And needs 2 additional guides to be re-wrapped, as well as some missing intermediate wraps. The butt section is missing 1 guide and also needs the missing hook keeper to be replaced and re-wrapped. The rod is probably worth $100-$200 as-is. The mentioned repairs would cost $150. And I would estimate the value after repair to be $400-$500. The work would not be able to be done until some time in late fall. This is an 8'6" 3 piece- 2 tip F. E. Thomas Special bamboo rod for a 6 weight line. The rod is in excellent refinished condition. The rod was beautifully refinished when I purchased it several years ago. And has only been fished a few times since. Rod weighs 4.5 ounces with 17/11 ferrules. I like it best with a WF6 line. Pre-1937 rod marked 31 inside 3 concentric circles on bottom of butt cap. Correct. Legible die stamp marking on butt cap. English twist guides with agate stripper. Tight fitting ferrules that pop nicely on separation. Grip and seat are excellent with no issues. Correct tube with nearly complete label. Tube has one ventilation hold drilled in cap and 4 holes drilled in the bottom. Original bag will be included. But shows wear and repairs. FE THOMAS BANGOR ME SPECIAL 9ft Split Bamboo Trout Fly Rod
Back in my younger days I used to restore fly rods like this one. I just do not have the time anymore. But this will be a good project rod for someone. The butt and mid sections each measure 36-1/2" long and are full-length. The tip measures only 32-1/2" long and at first does not appear to be the correct tip for this rod, judging by the wraps. However, the ferrule matches up exactly! Construction is 6-strip split-bamboo with German silver hardware and an agate stripper guide. The butt and mid sections are straight, the tip has a slight bend. All three sections are sound with no dried out glue or separations. The end of the butt cap has a"9" stamped on it, also a small dent. Several of the guides are missing, but these are the usual snake type and easy enough to replace.
