Search This is a vintage Thomas fly rod. Made in bangor maine. This rod has two tips, each with a different style end on it, Im guessing its a wet fly ... moreand dry fly tip but not sure. One tip is about 5/16 of an inch shorter than the other but one of the metal tips is 3/16 of an inch longer than the other, being a different style, so that accounts for part of the difference in length-the tips appear to have never been broken or repaired. Butt section is 38 8/16 long, center section is 38 8/16 long, one tip is 38 7/16 and the other is 38 2/16 long. The rod appears to be complete and is marked Dirigo FE Thomas Bangor Me on the reel seat. Reel seat appears to be nickle plated and has what I think is called a rolled soldered slide bar. I did some research but correct me if Im mistaken about names/details of this item. I was told and believe that the finish on the rod is the original varnish. The butt section and center section need to have the line guides rewrapped as they have been attached in a very sloppy manner, as shown in the pics. The two tips look to be in great shape however with all the guides securely attached. The rod measures 114 1/2 inches( 9 1/2 feet) when assembled but I did not really"jam" the sections together for fear of not being able to get them apart again. I believe the cork grip is referred to as sheet wrapped. Two tips come in a round bamboo storage case with a screw on cap. Bamboo case fits into the original canvas rod sack along with the butt and center sections. Canvas case is marked with the name LAWRENCE, I assume the original owner but dont know. This is a great rod but does need some repair work. I am not an expert on fly rods and got most of the info off the internet so please ask questions if you have any. You are bidding on a vintage F.E. Thomas bamboo fly rod. It is probably a 4wt. or 5 wt. It is exactly 8' 6" All sections are exactly the same length. I believe it has been refinished. At some point, to near perfection. It comes with its original rod sack, which is also in excellent condition. Its brass-capped aluminum rod tube is in good condition; the Thomas rod company emblem(decal) has some"chipping. There is not so much the slightest hint of"set" in this rod. Take care of this rod. As the previous owners have, and you can fish it for at least another 65 years. It is an heirloom. Any questions at all please do not hesitate to contact me. And I will answer them as best I can. Vintage F E Thomas, Bangor ME, Special, Split Cane Trout Fly Rod.
This is a 3 piece. Split Cane Trout Fly Rod made by the American Rod Builder, F.E. Thomas of Bangor, ME. The rod is called the'Special' It measures 9' 3" in length and may be a bit short. The butt cap has the number 308 stamped into the base with a stamped triangle below it. The rod is contained in a green cloth bag and an aluminium rod tube with brass screw cap. The rod tube carries what was the makers transfer printed trade logo. This is. As can be seen a bit frazzled. The rod is as stated a three piece but would originally have had a spare tip section. This rod has been re-furbished from the butt eye to the tip. It has the original ferrules but I am not so sure on the eyes and tip eye. I believe the rod to be usable but it could do with re-whipping. If you have any questions please get in touch before bidding.

Vintage Early F. E. Thomas Fly Rod and German Silver Hard Rubber Fly Reel
This is a very early F. E. Thomas trade rod built for the J. B. Hunter Company of Boston. Mass. and labeled'The Hunter' This 8'3" fairey styled rod is a testament to the superb build quality of Thomas and his craftsmen. Beautiful german silver sliding band knurled reel seat, winding check, hand welted waterproof ferrules, and german silve snake guides and tip top complement and tend to confirm the date engraved into the reel seat as original. The ferrules are 10/64 and 15/64 and have the waisted profile of the early ferrules with witness marks and still have some'pop' to them. When I got this rod it was missing a snake guide that I(poorly) replaced so I could try it out fishing. This is a fun set up for small trout which is what I catch out here in these small mountain streams. This old rod has 87 intermediate wraps, ... more11 signature wraps, and 29 wraps on guides, ferrules, and winding check that are scarlet and black! On the replaced guide I only replaced the scarlet and not the black tipping. This can be seen on the picture of the cork grip and signature wraps. The cork is the old time sheet variety and is well glazed from long use. The reel was bought at the same time and is unmarked but of very high quality in finish. I have been informed that this is a Montague and it has 60 marked on the foot and currently has an old H or G level silk line on it. It has 2 3/16" diameter end plates and 1" pillars. The ivory or ivoroid grip is in perfect shape. This is the flea weight of the Victorian era and is good for display or use. I'm sure that the present Thomas rod company would be happy to do a restoration on this and might be able to tell you more about its history. The rod tube is not original and the rod bag I made. They are not pretty but are very functional. The taper on the tip section is an absolute wonderment. Just below the tip top windings the cane measures an incredible.066" with the varnish. This means that the triangular sections to build the hexagonal rod were.038

A 2/2 impregnated rod. Featuring straw colored bamboo, 3 x 3 nodes, chrome guides anchored with goldenrod silks, and super-Z style ferrules with the T&T stamping. These rods seem to be a little scarce these days. And the reason being, they were discontinued in 1999. People are either hanging on to them, or have worn them out. The(ES) Emerger Series was offered in 2 and 4 piece. This happens to be an 8'6" 5 weight, 2 piece rod. And according to T&T. They were marketed to the budget conscious angler with an eye for detail. They used a quality blank with a lower grade cork and reel seat. Also, they omitted the sanding process on the scrim, which gives it that ES character. Well, I fished it for awhile, and decided to replace the cheap cork and black aluminum reel seat with Portuguese cork, burled cherry wood(I believe, it's been a long time) and nickel silver hardware. It spruced it up as you can see. Anyway, after I got it back from the shop, it was too pretty to fish, so I stored it ... moreaway. I occasionally brought it out and reminisced.but 15 years of reminiscing is a bit long. I've got over 20 rods, so I don't think I'll be missing it. It's a real pleasure to fish with, and has a beautiful sheen in the sun. It has very light wear, and on a scale of 10 it's a 9+. Comes with everything you see. It would require restoration, which would be a shame, since it is essentially original with some maintenance done over the years. All sections remain full length. 38 ¾” Nickel silver ferrules are 20/64” and 13/64” English guides. Hook keeper on the winding check, full nickel silver reel seat with a soldered(not drawn) wedding band. No number on the butt cap. The bag looks original to me. And so does the tube, although I have not seen one like it. The cap is machined aluminum with extensive knurling. And the bottom of the tube is swedged(see photos) CONDITION: This rod has been used. Varnish is dull and oxidizing but seems original. Wraps are mostly original except ... morefor some replacements in a correct color. At the ferrules, stripper, and tip-tops. Cork is excellent. Very well-cared for by its previous owner and seldom fished. This lightweight-yet-powerful, smooth-loading, quick-tipped, fast-action fly rod naturally shows a few faint signs of nominal cosmetic wear and tear in the expected high traffic areas that one might expect in a rod that's seen only occasional use. As evidenced in the photos. The cork grip displays a modest bit of staining from previous handling with bit of sporadic missing fill, but no major chips or gouges were otherwise found. The sturdy black anodized up-locking reel seat still looks great and functions as perfectly now as it once did new! A close inspection of the rod's glossy blue blank from tip to butt reveals the usual small scuffs and scrapes in the expected areas. But no signs of catastrophic abuse like deep scratches, scores, or penetrating nicks were found that would in any way hint the rod's original strength or integrity as compromised. Bamboo Fly Rod Custom or Edwards or Thomas Straight 7 Weight Steelhead Bass
Here is a Custom made rod.I think.purchased at an Estate Sale about 10 years ago. This is a 2/2 9 foot rod that's straight and true. Each tip has a slightly different male ferrule. But the performance is the same. The rod is labeled a 7/8 weight, but I found a WF-7 ideal. I used the rod on the Russian in Alaska for Silvers and Dolly Varden and in British Columbia for Bull Trout and the rod was marvelous. It may be a home made rod from an amateur maker, but to me it feels and looks more like a refinished Edwards or Thomas canoe rod. The cork and reel seat appear as new. Comes with Orvis type aluminum tube. Ferrules fit tight, rod is straight, no repairs, nice wraps, feels light to the hand for a 9 footer. F.E. Thomas Special Bamboo Fly Rod- 1936 Browntone
I am selling my 1936 F.E. Thomas Special Browntone 9ft. 3 pcs, 5 ½ oz vintage bamboo fly rod. This rod was passed down in the family. And I do not have much history on it. It appears to be restored at some point in its life and is in immaculate condition. There is plastic still on the cork handle. I have had this reviewed by experts at Thomas and they have confirmed the year 1936 by the diamond stamp on the rod butt. The screw locking section of the reel seat appears to have been replaced during refinishing as well. The rod comes with an extra tip that is missing the top rod guide. For sale is a vintage bamboo fly rod made in Bangor. Maine by F. E. Thomas. Butt cap has 4 on it. The rod has a total of 5 pieces and comes with 2 tips. Originally, it would have been 4, I assume. Since the two longest sections are 36 1/2 inches, I believe the rod started out as a 9 foot. F.E. Thomas is likely to have the records on how this rod was originally built and delivered. It is in nice condition but there are three sections that are now shorter than original so there have been repairs. Guides and ferrules are all excellent. Rod has a nice finish on it, shows signs of use and all wraps are tight, has been well taken care of. The total length of the butt piece is 34-1/4" and the mid section is 34-1/4" the tips are 32-1/4" The rod sock is in very good condition and has the original tag still attached to it. It comes in rod sock and original Thomas and Thomas tube(as shown in photos) This rod is in very good condition. I say very good because the cork is slightly soiled. The rod itself is in excellent condition. The storage tube has a couple of minor scratched. This fly rod has been well taken care of and the retail was over $700.00.
