I just prefer single hand rods. Tube and sock are in good condition. There are a couple of marks on the inside of the sock flap and a couple of scratches on the tube here and there. Consitency, and power, this rod will meet the expections of the angler who has a desire for the switch rod application with slighty shorter heads and heavier tips. Great in the surf for casting overhead, as well as spey style on a smaller steelhead or Atlantic salmon stream. Grain weight ranger would be 430-469 grains for Scandi lines, Skagit should be around 20 to 50 grains more. If you notice one of the pics shows that the rod has grain window of 447-478 written on it. I think the person writing the labels that day confused this rod with the 13'3" 7/8- which it is not. 11'6" 6/7-weight. My favorite choice for swinging classic steelhead patterns on the tight confines of the Trinity River in California is the 11'6" Winston BII-MX 6-weight. This rod. Paired with a 420-grain Compact Scandinavian floating line is the perfect spey casting solution for this river. This rod fires long accurate casts with a small"D" loop and the lightness in hand(5 oz) makes fishing for the"fish of a thousand casts" possible with a minimum of physical effort. Winston 996-5 BL5 fly rod with sock and tube,
Up for bids today we have a nice example of a Winston 996-5 BL5 fly rod that is in very good used condition. This is a 5 piece rod that is best for a 8 or 9 weight floating line. There is no warrenty card. This rod is in very good condition except for a scratch in the tip section that is visible in the 6th picture. The tip appears to be very sound and is quite thick due to the rods design and the fact that I have been told the BL5 series had a fiberglass tip. It is. What it is and the rest of the rod looks to have had, not that much use, as there is no corrosion on the guides or reel seat and the hand turned cork grip is very nice. The rod comes complete with a factory Winston green aluminum rod tube and cloth sock. These Winston 996-5 BL5 rods are favored by many as a Steelhead or Salmon rod as well as a Saltwater rod as they have great ... morelifting power due to their boron butt sections but provide excellent tippet protection due to there soft tips that many say are made of fiberglass. These 5 piece designs also travel exstreamly well. A handsome workhorse rod that is still one of the best Winstons ever made for the task! This is a factory built, all original IM6 rod, with the serial numbers written on both sections of the rod, plus on the cap of the rod tube. The spigot ferrules are in excellent condition, fit together with a 1/4 inch gap, just like they are supposed to. No deep scratches, dings, or any structural flaws whatsoever. No repairs have been made to this rod, none are needed. The tube has a few scratches from normal use, but is still in excellent condition. The spigot ferrules are in excellent condition, fit together with a 1/4 inch gap, just like they are supposed to. No deep scratches, dings, or any structural flaws whatsoever. Boron IIx in great condition. Look at the pictures of the cork! very small hairline abrasions on blank and on reel seat due to normal wear. I take excellent care of my rods. Clean cork often, wipe down after every trip. It is very hard to part with this rod, but I am making room for a new Hardy. This is a sweet, light weight fast, but not too fast beautiful rod like only Winston can make. I personally think this outcasts any of the newer Boron models. I will only sell to someone who will appreciate it! Tube and sock included.

The only issue with this rod, if it is an issue, is that a couple of thread wraps came off the tip ferrule section which I have tried to show in the last picture. I lawn cast this rod with a Rio Gold 4 Weight line and it just sings; a Wulff LongBelly 4 weight was also just the ticket too. Finally have made the decision to part with my vintage Winston. 8' 9" bamboo rod. This is a hollow built rod weighing 4 3/4oz. serial No.9635 and a wonderful tool for Atlantic salmon wet and dry fly work as well as swinging wet flies and streamers to steelhead and large trout. All sections are straight and of equal length with snug-fitting ferrules. The cork handle and reel seat are in very good condition. Rod is stored in the original rod sleeve and rod case- both in pretty good shape, considering age and history. I have tried my best to photograph and describe this rod.
