Vintage lot of flies(over 20) in Orvis section box(feels like celluloid) that measures 3 1/2" x 6" x 1" They vary by size and type. And all are shown in the photo. The box has labels, but not all the correct flies are located in the correct sections. Some may be missing, or extras may be included, or others not listed may be included. It was found in the estate of a sportsman. Condition is fairly good but will vary by piece- flies look OK. Large MONTREAL laminae scale-wing Lake Fly Invented and tied by John Harrington Keene It started with a challenge from a prominent British sportsman in the Fishing Gazette in the late 19 th century: What is really required is a substance which combines the lightness and buoyancy of the feather in the air as well as in the water. With the toughness and power of the quill to retain its shape, together with the pliability, transparency, and texture of the gold-beater’s skin, and the property of being easily stained or dyed. Keane accepted the challenge and in his book, Fly Fishing and Fly Making(1887) writes: I call it“Scale. inasmuch as it is in laminae… I claim that this material absolutely fulfils the requirements laid down, and I have entrusted C.F. Orvis, of Manchester, Vt. by far the best practical fly tyer I know of– with the preparation ... moreof these scale-wing flies. Carthew; then to Jim Deren(owner. Angler’s Roost) who was asked by Carthew to steam and restore a collection of 111 Gordon flies from which these 10 flies were payment for services; then to Charles DeFeo in trade for painting an elaborate Angler’s Roost sign; then to Paul Schmookler who purchased these and other collectible flies from DeFeo. These 10 flies were in addition to the collection of the 101 specimens housed in an aluminum reservoir that were featured in a 1954 article in Sports Illustrated. The flies are tied on short limerick style English up-eyed dry fly hooks. Gordon’s early commercial flies emulated the dressings of F.M. Halford. Detached Olive Drake designed and tied by Louis Rhead From American Trout Stream Insects July Insect Chart Number 6: Olive Drake page 68 Louis John Rhead(November 6. 1857– July 29, 1926) was an English-born American artist, illustrator, author, and angler who was born in Eturia, Staffordshire, England. He immigrated to the United States at the age of twenty-four. Rhead was an avid fly fisher and by his own account started fishing for trout in the U.S. sometime between 1888 and 1890. In 1901 he became interested in angling art and much of his later published works deal with fly fishing. Rhead was also a tackle dealer and sold his own line of artificial flies. The extended body cut wing is delicate and tied to imitate one of the small size 18 dun wing mid-summer olives of the northeastern U.S. The tails are remarkable as they are taken from the near transparent barbules of the dun game cock hackle. Clint Brown Select A Bait Set in Box and Pick A Lure Set in Box
South Bend made a Select-Oreno set. These are similar to this lure and would be a great addition to a South Bend collection or a fly rod bait collection. First is a Clint Brown's Select-a-Bait set"for the fly rod. Comes in brown snap top case. All lures are included with the hooks and mini buck tails. You can mix and match the colors to make various baits. Set does look like it was used but all parts are present. A cute fly rod lure package. Box is in excellent condition and is very hard to find. I've also included a plastic Pick-a-Lure set. This is similar to the South Bend and Clint Brown sets. Probably made in the 40's to 50's? Has the instruction booklet with it. Includes several flys and hooks. One lure is missing the top and can easily be replaced. Box is in good condition and the plastic lid has two snaps missing ... moreon the back. Extremely Rare Early Callmac Bug on McCarthy Card No 11 Carter Harrison
Extremely rare Cal McCarthy Callmac bug on impossible to find McCarthy Patent February 19. 1918 card. This Callmac is the No 11 Carter Harrison variety and is unused on the card. This is one of the earliest cards I have ever been able to personally find for the Callmac. This lure is the precursor to the South Bend Callmac bug. If you collect fly rod lures, Callmac bugs, or South Bend fly rod baits, this would be an outstanding piece to add to your collection. Here is a nice vintage fly fishing wallet. It is in lovely little used condition(see clear picture to decide before bidding) It is a Hardy of Alnwick wallet and is in two clipped sections. One section has cast holders and some cast packets and the other section has some salmon flies. Deadbait pin etc. The wallet is in lovely shape and is stamped with the makers name on an iinside flap. It contains a number of assorted vintage and not so flies in good condition. The box has some tarnish/discolouration and has a name lightly marked on one side which is hardly noticable.
