Before the term"realistics" ... moreemerged(no pun intended) Schmookler was tying ultra-realistic imitations such as the Golden Stonefly nymph( Phasganophora capitata) His Eastern Orange Stonefly nymph( Paragnetina immarginata) Cranefly imitations, etc. It was the era of his Insectaslides®- actual specimens imbedded in resin- as references for both fly tiers and professional entomologists. On August 18. 1980 Schmookler's talents as a collector and realistic tier gained national recognition in a Sports Illustrated article titled"Yep. Another Nymphomaniac" that featured his EASTERN GOLDEN STONEFLY NYMPH. Stoneflies for the Angler by Eric Leiser and Robert Boyle followed in 1982 and also featured Schmookler's realistic EASTERN GOLDEN STONEFLY NYMPH as did Judith Dunham's 1988 Art of the Trout Fly and finally"Flies that are tied for art. Not fish" Sports Illustrated. December 17, 1990) For auction is one of Schmookler's Eastern Golden Stonefly nymphs. Tied circa 1982. The legs, wingcases and body of these imiations were handpainted on sheet Tyvek®. In the 1970s Tyvek® was a brand new building material that could not be torn and was imprevious to weather. However, it could be cut with a very sharp razor. The legs were attached first, then the fur underbody was wrapped, and the other pieces tied in place to produce an anatomically correct imitation. The fly is presented framed with a letter of authenticity from Schmookler. The Golden stonefly nymph( Phasganophora capitata) was produced in a limited edition of 100 and this is#35.

1920 K& L COMMON SENSE Fly Wallet measures 5x7" Pat date Oct. 1913. Roughness and wear along right and left edges with some wear on surfaces. Has a double male snap on front. Metal binder inside has 7 envelopes with flaps and clear covered fronts. Has two felt inserts. Wallet has deterioration on cloth liner on inside which can be seen in photos. There are at a rough count 50 vintage. Very nice hand tied streamers, tandems. snelled flies, bass flies and dry flies. This is a very early fly wallet and a great lot of early hand tied flies.

Glentana size 8/0 vintage gut eye salmon fly date about 1900
Glentana size 8/0 vintage gut eye salmon fly. This is a very good example of the famous Dee pattern. With the correct ribbing of flat silver tinsel and gold twist, but with an interesting variation in that there is a turn of Golden Pheasant breast feather at the shoulder instead of the usual Teal or Widgeon. Benchill size 3/0 vintage gut eye salmon fly. This fly may well be by HARDY'S. As it appears to be tied on one of their patent oval wire hooks, and is very much in their style. The fly probably dates from about 1920. And is in excellent condition without any of the fading so often found of the blue in this classic Tay pattern. Antique Leather Fly Fishing Wallet with approx 80 Original Flies c1890 The owner's name is written in ink inside the wallet. It looks to be D A Topley. Though I cannot be certain. His address is Avenue Street. There is a road of that name in Ripley, which is less than 5 miles away from where I acquired this wallet, so it seems to have remained in the area all its life. There is no date in the folder but it is almost certainly late Victorian. There is a small paper wallet of the fishing rod and tackle maker W J Cummins inside which is useful for dating purposes. It mentions the International Fisheries Exhibition of 1883. The leather wallet measures around 163mm by 100mm. And contains around 80 flies. Some are in compartments with hand written details alongside. Some of the contents might have got a little mixed up over the years, But I ... morehave not moved anything and the wallet is exactly as it was when I acquired it.
