This reel is engraved on the front metal plate with"DAME, STODDARD& KENDALL, BOSTON, JULIUS VOM HOFE'S PATENT NOV. 17, 85, PAT. OCT. 8, 1889" This reel has a hard rubber front and rear body with a metal plate attached to the front face. The spool, pillars, body plates, and foot are nickel plated brass in good condition. I see some brass on the spool sides and the foot. The handle knob is hard rubber. It is quite possible some parts are German Silver, such as the rosette washers and screws. There is a clicker controlled by a slide button on the rear plate. It is in good working condition and good overall condition. There is one scratch on the rim of the rear plate in the hard rubber. The plating is in very poor condition with about 95% worn off(see photos) There is a clicker controlled by a slide button on the back plate. It is in very good working condition. The handle appears to have a ivory colored plastic knob, although it could be the real thing. There are no marks on the reel as to manufacturer. Some identifying features include the front cover screws are placed at 9:00 and 3:00, and the foot is one piece very similar to a Terry foot, but the screws thread directly into the foot tabs, not a supporting block. A. Whittemore Co. of Boston. This reel and tackle retailer operated from 1901 to the mid-1970s and sold reels made by Montague, Pflueger and others. From the foot design this reel is identified as being manufactured by Pflueger. The reel has nickel plating over brass. The plating is in good condition. There are small surface scratches from normal use. You are bidding on the very rare Hardy Super Silex Multiplier 3 1/4" Hiduminium/duralumin corrosion resistant alloy finish or casting fly reel in absolutely magnificent condition. The highlights of this very rare reel are: a perforated face plate. A full grooved brass foot frame mounted, ivorine trigger casting lever, half moon ivorine tension adjuster,right hand wind, ebonite crank handle, regulator screw on the rim, in a very rare pristine condition. We estimate the circa of this reel to be 1930-1939. They don't come any rarer. On the inside of the reel(picture# 12) are the initials T.A. being the Hardy employee who made this reel and the letters OK in a circle. Martin MG-10 Fly Reel --Multiplier Reel, 3-to-1, Exc. ++ condition (barely used)
This Martin multiplier reel has a butter-smooth action and purrs when cranked. It has been used once or twice-years ago-but I put it away put away greased and it is in nearly new condition. If you see any discolored spots in the pics. Those are jut reel lube from the last grease job, or surface dust- I only gave it a quick wipe before I took the pics) No stripped or missing screws. The retrieve and the adjustable drag and gears and everything else work like they should, it is functionally like new and cosmetically close to the same. Has about a 3-to-1 retrieve ratio and gets line in fast. It is a fun reel to work and I am reluctant to sell it, but I just don't fish ponds or lakes or big water much and it is really overkill for small stream/ 20 foot casts. Weight is surprisingly light considering the gear advantage-right at 6 ounces on ... moremy scale. I had quite a bit of dacron backing plus a 6 wt line on it, and think it would handle any 5-7wt with ease, and maybe others. All in all. A nice vintage reel in really nice shape and ready to work.
