Two Antique Fly Fishing Reels - Meisselbach Expert & Union Hardware 7115S
Two antique Fly Fishing Reels. Meisselbach Expert& Union Hardware 7115S One reel is a Meisselbach Expert. Estimate it was manufactured before 1905. Only markings on the reel are EXPERT on the top bridge. Following the history of the Meisselbach Expert reel it appears to be Nickle plated brass. Reel is in rough shape. Not sure if complete or not. Reel needs a good cleaning and inspection to free up and see if restorable. Good wall hanger. Maybe parts reel. Second reel is a Union Hardware fly reel. Reel was manufactured in Torrington Connecticut. Reel has markings on backside but very difficult to read. Reel has not been cleaned or polished. Last digits of model number are.115S. Difficult to read due to the patina of the steel construction. Reel looks to be fully functional. Reel looks to be complete. Can't figure out if there is any ... morekind of drag adjustment. Clicker works, reel turns nice for its age. If I would have to guess reel is circa 1900-1910. Union reel experts please advise if my assumption is in error. Meisselbach Expert #17 Fly Reel, Headplate Click, circa 1895
Yawman& Erbe/H-I Auto Fly Reel Here is an early Meisselbach Expert No. 17 fly reel(3 inch plates) with the head plate click. Which was used from 1888-99. The grooved straight taper knob was used from 1895-1900, according to Phil White's excellent book, Meisselbach and Meisselbach-Catucci Fishing Reels: A Collector's Guide, so we know this reel dates to 1895. Meisselbach Expert Fly Reel, Exposed Click Gear, circa 1890's

There are 3 patents dates on the reel, as shown in one picture, maybe this will help identify this reel for those who know these reels. Email me with any questions. Antique First Edition A. F. Meisselbach 1888 "EXPERT" Nickel Plated Fly Reel
You are bidding on one"EXPERT" fly reel. The spool measures 3" diameter. The body measures 3 1/2" diameter. The depth is approximately 2" including the handle. The foot is approx 2-1/4" long. In the top of the body is inscribed in"EXPERT" On the face of the spool is inscribed"PAT'D. FEB 23-86, NOV 23-86, FEB 5-89" The body and spool are nickel plated brass. The plating is in excellent condition. The handle is wood and is in excellent condition. There is a copy of this reel in worse condition than this one on display at an angling museum. Researching the web I found the following information: The Expert reel was the second reel produced by A. F. Meisselbach& Bro. It was a vertically aligned reel that the Meisselbach's envisioned as a fly reel. Trolling reel, or casting reel. The ... morefirst version of the Expert(1888-1895) had a notation that these reels had a bullet shaped knob and this version of the Expert is scarce in both sizes. Later editions had"expert" in an italic font rather than block font. A. F. Meisselbach. The son of German immigrants, designed his first fishing reel in 1885. At the tender age of 20 he received a patent on this reel and then convinced A.G. Spalding& Bros. to sell the reel for him. This reel was a simple single action reel, that we call the Amateur. Demand was brisk, and"Gus" soon convinced his brother, William, to go into the business with him and their Newark, NJ garage was soon humming with machine work. In 1888 they expanded their line rapidly and moved into a larger machine shop. That year they added the Expert Reel, the Universal Rod Holder and their famous line of Spring Bow nets. A.F. Meisselbach& Bro. Newark. NJ August Frederich Meisselbach's first reels were simple. Useful reels. He received the patent for his first reel on February 23, 1886. It was for a nickel plated brass flat reel named the"Amateur" Then came the"Expert" in 1888 and then the"Featherlight"

The plating is nearly intact with only a few rubs. Please enlarge the photos. Since Meisselbach did not mark their reels with the Meisselbach name until 1906, according to Phil White's definitive Meisselbach Collector's Guide, we know that this reel was made between 1906-1919. The spindle was apparently drilled a bit off center into the backplate arm at the factory, although it does not affect the operation. Cranks smoothly and the click works well. As Phil White says. Due to its small size(2 3/8" diameter) it is a neat looking reel and is more uncommon than the(larger) 17. A fine addition to your collection! Thank you for looking! MEISSELBACH EXPERT No. 18, Fly Reel. Pin Drag c1890s
Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 This auction is for an A. F. Meisselbach& Bro. Expert No. 18. This model Expert has a pin drag. Rather than a click. They were made from 1888-1895, so are scarce. This reel is 3 inches in diameter and 1 inch wide. It has a wooden crank knob. The reel is only stamped with Expert on the top frame brace, and the patent dates of Feb 23, 1886, Nov 23, 1886, and Feb 5, 1889. This example is not in very good condition with wear to the nickel plating and filing to the foot. It does work as intended and could be polished up for a collection. Or mounted on an old bamboo bait rod to make a great decorator. These reels are not common. Buyer pays USPS Priority Mail actual cost. I ship priority mail so that tracking is available and the item is insured. Feedback will be given when I receive feedback ... morefrom the buyer. NON U.S. SALES: I will only ship to non-United States residents using the eBay Global Shipping Program. I feel the fees are high. But if a buyer wants to pay them you are free to do so. I will ship out of country in no other manner. Please check the fee that eBay will charge before bidding, and then don’t complain about the shipping and duty cost. Again, I WILL ONLY SHIP OUT OF THE U.S. USING EBAY GLOBAL SHIPPING.
