Meisselbach Featherlight 260 Fly Reel Circa 1904-19 Bronze Finish. Operates.
Don't know much about vintage fishing reels. But it's a vintage Featherlight. It is very light. Rotates and clicks nicely. 2 1/4 Featherlight# 260 fly reel by Meisselbach of Newark. New Jersey. The Featherweights were distinguished by their stamped frame which incorporated ridges to strengthen the metal frame. This is the first instance of this type of metalworking and Meiselbach received a patent for it in 1904. This model of reel was heavily machined to remove as much metal as possible to achieve a light, yet strong reel. This was a very popular reel in its time. The company was started by brothers William and August Meisselbach in Newark, New Jersey in 1885. The NewJersey style of reel as it was later to be called was carried by AG Spalding& Bros. Be sure to look at all the photos. It is what it is. Antique Meisselbach Raised Pillar Fly Reel, Featherlight Mod. #280, early 1900's
You are bidding on an antique Meisselbach raised pillar skeleton fly reel. Featherlight Model 280, patented in 1896. It came from the estate of a family friend. The Featherlight 280 was manufactured from 1898 to 1919. I understand that Meisselbach did not put their mark on reels prior to 1906. So this marked reel likely dates from 1906 to 1919. Please Note: Photos are an integral part of item description. I know nothing about fishing gear and relied on a friend who does to help with descriptions and condition. Have described items to the best of my ability but expect potential buyers will know what they are bidding on. Please e-mail me if you have any questions. Jan. 14 96 On head plate: Featherlight On foot ... moreplate: No. 280 Description: This fly reel operates manually and has a ratchet mechanism. Raised pillar. Raised star skeleton style. Meisselbach made this reel in nickel and bronze and this one appears to be bronze. Condition: Reel appears to be in very good condition and seems to be fully functional- turns smoothly. S pool moves freely. There is some age-appropriate paint wear. But no corrosion. I'm not an expert and didn't want to clean the reel and risk damaging value by possibly using improper materials. Will leave that task to the buyer. It's time to downsize my possessions and pass on things I don't need to someone who will use and appreciate them. Please carefully review all ad text. Photos and shipping notes and ask any questions before you bid. Check out my other auctions for more vintage fishing gear. Vintage tools, a WW II U. S. military jungle hammock, new CD's and more.
