The ribbed brass foot has"Pat. No. 272409" impressed into the side, this is sturdy and well attached, as is the ebonite handle. The agate lined line guide has"Hardy's Pat" impressed in to it and shows minimal signs ... moreof wear, the rim regulator screw moves fine. The reel revolves well with a good smooth action and the three screw release latch works fine. The reel has the letters"T.P. and"L" impressed internally. T.P. are the initials of"Thomas Pattinson" the gentleman who made the reel, he worked for"Hardy Brothers" between 1920- 1930. The reel has the letter"B" engraved in to the face plate and has the usual scratches and scuffs that you would expect from the years of use. But all adds to its' character and charm, so evocative of times and anglers past. We take great care to describe our items as clearly and honestly as possible. Vintage HARDY St.John 3 3/4" Salmon reel LHW
You are bidding on a vintage Hardy St. John 3 7/8" Left Hand Wind Salmon fly reel. Retaining most of it's gray finish, in remarkably good condition, well maintained. It has a full length grooved brass foot, perforated spool, 2 screw spool release latch, a rim tension/drag adjustment knob, engraved on the rear with the maker's name and make and sixe of the reel. The reel appears to have had little use. It is set for Left Hand Wind; however, a simple reversal of the spring and clicker inside will reverse it the other way.The spool has a 2 screw spool latch release, with a brown ebonite crank handle. Turning the crank handle shows a smooth action. The permanent click drag must"scream" with a substantial salmon tugging at the fly. I am selling today this wonderful vintage fly reel built by J. W. Young of Reditch England for Milward's. These reels where built and marketed by Gladding during the time they owned the Payne rod company. This reel comes with the 3 additional spools as shown in the photos. These are very smooth reels and are very similar to Hardy's St. George Reels. Usually these reels are found with only one additional spool. I have removed the white line from its spool. Rare Early Hardy St George three screw Fly Reel for your bamboo rod
Wonderful old Hardy St. George 3 screw fly reel. Hard to find these in this good of shape. Measures 3 3/8" in diameter. Nice clear agate line guard. However, there is a slight hairline crack on the bottom, but should still be able to be used without damaging fly line. Mark II Duplicated type check mechanism. Marked with makers mark- J. The only thing I have done is add a little oil. Reel functions properly, no scraping or wobble. Sounds reel good. Strong drag. Unfiled brass foot. This rod will be expertly packaged and shipped insured to your location. I am an honest seller. Lead finish frame with three-screw drum. Ribbed brass foot, and gray agate line guard. The agate line guard has a hairline crack in it, but it will not effect the line, as it cannot be felt with one's finger. There are no performance issues with this reel; right hand retrieve is tight with no wobble. Excellent reel for 5 or 6 weight line. Prewar Hardy St John 3 Screw Leaded Fly Reel W/ Box EXC Cond.
As far as Hardy reels being for sale. This is as good as it gets. The original box gives this a date of 1932-36. There is a trace of silk line residue and the sloped side of spool shows some sign of"salt dusting" so assume reel was fished at least once. Mechanically reel is excellent. I have not cleaned or wiped reel at all. I put a touch of grease on spindle and pawl just to give it a few spins. With scant evidence of oil or grease, it is apparent Hardy expected very little lubrication to be used on their reels. There are some nicks to the leading. A bit of wear on edge and back from mostly being in the box. Box is sound with no breaks. Excellent original label and graphics on lid. A faint"JS Neill" seller) written on one side of box. 3 barely legible initials written in pencil on lid above word Hardy. This has line on it and it appears to be in excellent used condition with no defects that I note beyond normal wear to the finish. This is one of a number of fly fishing pieces I recently acquired from the Estate of Arthur Milliken who was headmaster of the Westminster School in Simsbury, CT from 1936 to 1956 and after whom a dormitory is named. Although I believe the whole family fished, many of the items in the estate apparently belonged to Mr. Milliken's mother, an early avid fly fisher in the early 1900's. JW Young Fly Reel Red Agate Line Guide Vintage (Hardy St George Style)
JW Young Fly Reel with a red agate line guide. Built by J.W. Young. 3 1/2 diameter 7/8" wide spool. This reel was a"clone" of Hardy's St. George fly reels, with a single row of winding plate perforations, red agate line guide set in a nickel silver ring and nickel silver rim tension screw. Built for right hand wind, the reel is in VG condition, with moderate finish wear and scattered shallow scratches. I've noticed a faint line in the red agate(I couldn't capture it in the photo) but can't feel any crack in the smooth surface and price is adjusted for that. The reel foot is smooth brass with no tool marks.

Beautiful Hardy St George 3 3/4" Fly Fishing Reel Vintage 1920's Antique 3 Screw
I don't really want to sell this reel but my wife wants granite countertops. This is a beautiful and rare reel. It comes with a beautiful red leather case. The finish on the reel is a beautiful shiny silver. Some may argue that the silver colour is the result of losing the blued finish but I believe that it was manufactured in this finish. There is no evidence of any blueing anywhere on the reel. The line on the spool looks to be some kind of sinking line of 7-9 weight. There are two nick/scratches on the back face of the reel. Otherwise. The reel is in perfect working order and mechanically excellent. The brass reel seat was bent at some point in its history but was fixed by the original owner. I cannot say enough how attractive this reel appears. Inside the reel is stamped JS which stands for Jimmy Smith who built this reel from start ... moreto scratch at Hardy company in the 1920's or 1930's. I bought the reel from the son of a deceased man who lived in a small village in Iceland. I wanted to put it on my bamboo rod but alas, my wife wants it sold. If you buy this reel, you will not be disappointed. The movement, sound and drag on this reel is phenomenal. The line guide is agate and the silver covering it is stamped"Hardy's Pat. A vintage Hardy. St. George 3 3/4" reel w/ original leather pouch. Made in England and in very good used condition. Reel& spool maintain almost all of their original finish. Ribbed brass foot, rim tension screw and Hardy line guide are all original and are in very good condition. Spool in reel o perates smoothly without any play. reel& spool have very little wear- see photo detail. Extra spool feels like it rubs once per turn during a slow revolution and has lost some finish. some rivets have very minor greening but should clean up easily- I did not attempt to clean because I did not want to damage the finish etc. see photo detail) original leather pouch has a small tear(see photo) and some staining but the stitching and draw string appear to be in good condition. Leather maintains much of its buttery feel and will be packed ... morewith care. Printed insert; I don't know if this came with the reel or is a reprint that my father acquired later. Suede leather double case: fleece lined and in good used condition(may be Orvis) all items shown in photo number#1 are included. My father left the St George 3 3/4" reel(and a number of others) after his passing. This reel was given to him by his father in 1959 who purchased it in England that same year. Vintage Hardy St.George 3 3/4" Silver Line Guard RHW Salmon Fly Reel
Offered for sale is a Vintage Hardy St. GEORGE 3 3/4" Salmon/Steelhead Fly Reel. A SILVERED LINE GUARD, a rim tension adjustment knob, set for RHW in very good vintage condition. This reel is at least 80+ years young. It is signed on the reverse with the maker's name, style and size and the Hardy Patent number 658472. The grooved brass foot is a bit short to accommodate modern reel seats. The reel seat is mounted on the frame with two brass screws. The reel has the classic perforated spool, the two screw latch hub or spool mount, the brass rim tension adjustment knob, a strong click drag, brass rivets on the back plate and has a clean smooth click action and presents in spot on shape. This reel is quite rare especially in this condition. It maintains it's original gray gun metal finish. The reel might enjoy a cleaning. An oil ... morebath and a good home. The reel being in fine honest original condition. With no damage or cracks, running very free, retaining it's original patina. Vintage Hardy Fly Fishing Reel - St George 2 9/16" C 1950's
I am offering a 2 9/16" Hardy St. George Jr. Fly Reel C. 1950's. Its condition is used but very good. It has been recently sent to the Hardy Service Center in Spirit Lake. Iowa for clean and lube. The description on the back of the reel is as follows: MADE BY HARDY BROS. LTD/ENGLAND/THE ST. GEORGE 2 9/16" The reel came with a monel metal line guide rather than a agate line guide and was produced post World War II. Many St. George, and indeed Perfect, reels came with a metal rather than an agate line guide, especially those produced post WWII. Metal line guides are very common on Hardy Reels. Agate supplies were scarce and metal was used in its place. If you look at the back of the reel, the writing is in straight lines and not a circular pattern. The signifies a post WWII reel.
