The reel is brown on the back and maroon on the front, it works and is in very good condition(there are some scratches from use on the edges of the reel. The box is in great condition.

#1170 and #1180 South Bend St. Joe skeleton fly reels + unusual box
In 1929. South Bend introduced the#1100 and the#1180 fly reels, the first for the company. The#1180 St. Joe(named after the local river or possibly the county) was the skeleton offering made of solid brass. The model above is in remarkable condition. It was 6 years later that the cheaper(and steel instead of brass) 1170 was introduced- also named the St. Joe. As a result, those steel reels are usually found with various degrees of corrosion. The one above is no exception. The box has always been a mystery because there is no other SB box like it. It is marked"Campbell Box and Tag Company, South Bend" on one flap. The box is in great shape without holes or rips, but it has penciled numbers on top. It is the box for the#1170 reel. The only other skeleton was the larger#1172, so with this auction, you already have 2 of the 3. Priority ... moremail with a flat $8.50 fee. International arrangements can be made.

Made for South Bend by Winchester as identified by the underlined 80 yd stamping on the bottom of the foot. The flared handle knob, large counterweight button, and other Winchester characteristics. Note the cool swirled green bakelite knob. An attractive reel retaining nearly all of it's original gunmetal finish with a little brass showing through. Cranks smoothly and the click purrs due to the fine toothed ratchet gear.
