Just like it's supposed to. It's even loaded with some old fly line from the day. This reel was made for a very long time in variations from 1937 to 1974, an amazing span of 37 years. At least. This one has some old line that needs stripping and it needs a cleaning but seems to function rather nicely. One could have an immediate user with new line but I would recommend a cleaning and lube first but I don't use or work on automatic fly reels so I defer judgement to someone with more knowledge. This fly reel is marked on the front as you see in picture 1. Shakespeare Silent Tru-Art Automatic. On the side of the reel in picture 4 it is marked. No. 1835 Model GD.on the reel foot it is marked. Made In USA. Patented. This reel works good/smooth, the wind up spring works good and the lever you see on the side works good when pushed down to rewind the line you let out. This reel is in good condition as you can see but in picture 6 you can see at the top left above the reel foot where it might have been dented then pushed back out i think and scuffed the paint but does not seem to affect anything as it seems to work good and there is some light ... morepaint wear on the reel from use as you look at the pictures. The reel has a green fly line on it as you see in picture 2. This reel is in good condition as you can see from the pictures and would be great to use in your fishing seasons. This piece was purchased from an old fishing camp on Sanibel Island that belonged to J. Charles McCullough of the McCullough Seed Company. The reel works great and only has some minor wear. The line will need to be replaced, as it is old and worn. The reel is accompanied with the original box. The box corners are coming apart, but the the box is intact. Showing normal wear and scuffing, no split edges. Dark green reel shows wear and scuffing on main reel surfaces, including a dent near main encryption. Dent does not interfere with function of reel. This is a Number 1835, Model GD, constructed with pride in the USA. Shakespeare’s innovative designs changed the way people fished. This reel is designed to work silently. After you cast, a light tap on the lever activates a spring-loaded mechanism to automatically rewind your line. Reel can be mounted for right- or left-handed use. Everything about this reel works as it should. There is no rust. Screws and covers turn easily. Allowing easy access for adjustments and maintenance. There are a few minor cosmetic scuffs in the paint, as would be expected for a piece of equipment of this era. But overall, the satin green anodized finish and incised design are very ... morepleasing to the eye. Check out the simulated tortoise-shell adornment on the rewind lever… This is definitely a classy piece of fly-fishing memorabilia! The reel had a single owner. A doctor who took occasional trips out West to try his hand at trout fishing. He took great care of it and stored it in his non-smoking shop. The reel still has fly line, his hand-knotted leader, and a fly attached– ready for your next fishing trip! The line and leader look sturdy, but it’s probably a good idea to test their strength before relying on them to haul in a big fish. This reel is very decorative.
