Michigan, there are two models up for this listing the first is the No. 57 in a burgundy color shows visible wear to the color spool turns, needs cleaning and new line, believe it is stuck) the other is model 87 in a medium brown color also shows visible wear to the exterior metal spins nicely, also could use new line and cleaning, The reels measure 3" in diameter and are 2" and 1.75" in thickness. This is a vintage South Bend“Oreno-matic 1140 Free Stripping Automatic Fly Reel” in the original box and with the original“Reel Repair Stations Guide. Reel surface shows the normally expected scuffs and scratches associated with ordinary light use. Internal springs and mechanisms appear to be taut and in good working order. And reel features smooth silent winding, fold-away precision control trigger, and stainless steel line protector. As you can see from the photos, the original box is completely intact, and is stiff and clean, though understandably shows some signs of its age. I have left the original fly line on for the collector, though I would advise replacing the line for the fly fisher who plans on using the reel. The Paperwork enclosed in the original box goes through the No Brake Manipulation and all the special features of the reel. The brochure goes on to say that the reel has a Black Alumilite finish that is non light reflecting. The paperwork also describes the parts of the reel. Cautions and what is important in maintenance. The No. 50 reel at that time sold for $9.25. Weight. Capacity and other information is listed. The paperwork at the top says circular No. 46A March1946 The paperwork has been folded but is in pretty good condition. There is some aging and rubbing where the reel was sitting on it. For sale is a very nice vintage Heddon Automatic Free Stripping No. 87 Fly Reel manufactured by James Heddon’s Sons Dowagiac. Michigan with its Original Box and Paper Insert. I don’t know if this reel has ever been used but if it has it doesn’t show it. There a couple of rub marks but it is otherwise in unmarked condition. The reel is unusual because the spool spring is still intact and is very strong. The reel is finished in a dark brown/bronze color with engraved graphics. The box is in very good condition but the label appears to have been rubbed or stripped off. The insert is in very nice condition and contains not only information on the reel but also advertising for some of the Heddon fly rod lures popular during this period of time.
