The reel was produced by the Shakespeare Company of Kalamazoo. U.S.A. The reel is a Model 1889 reel with dual end bearings. The reel is very clean. The reel was found in its original box. The reel measures 3 and 5/8's inches in diameter and is 1 and 3/8's inches thick not including the winding handle. The reel appears to be in very good condition. The reel frame itself is in very good condition. The spool appears to have been painted along with the reel. The paint comes off with mineral spirits. As shown on spool center. I think the box is worth more than the reel unless you had a spool. Internals are very good with a nice strong click and work as designed. The turning knob is missing. This reel was used and seems to be built with the drag on all the time. Maybe that is what they mean by Single Action. The front side painted black has the SS elliptical decal made in Kalamazoo. U.S.A. RUSSELL No. 1884 Model GA- Handle side) Green plastic handle with aluminum face. Reel seat underneath is stamped- Made in U.S.A. over PATENTED. In very good shape. Box has use around the edges and is 4"x4"x2-1/2" high and is labeled 1884 over 110 Yds. G" Line over RUSSELL SPECIAL over Single Action Trout Reel over Made in U.S.A. This reel must have belonged to Mildred-as it is signed on the top in pencil. The reel is 3-1/2" in Diameter by 1" thick not including the length of the green handle, which is 3/4" long by 1/4 diameter tapered.

I have here two vintage fly fishing reels. The Wards Sport King is in very good condition. Not much noticeable wear. The Shakespeare 1895 Russell is in good condition. I am no expert when it comes to fly reels but even I can see that these reels came from the same factory the only thing different is the name stamped on the case. I did notice one thing different on the internals though. The Shakespeare has an additional part that can be seen in the pictures. There is also one part missing and that is the screw to hold the spool on the reel. There is only one screw between the 2 reels as seen in the photos. Please ask any questions you have. Thanks.

Large, and hard to find vintage SHAKESPEARE RUSSELL NO. 1895 MODEL HF FLY FISHING REEL with large 3.5 inch plates. The spool plate features a double row of ventilators and a large nickel plated end end bolt with an antique crystalline crank knob. The tail plate reads"SHAKESPEARE HONOR BUILT HONOR SOLD, MADE IN KALAMAZOO U.S.A. RUSSELL NO. 1895, and MODEL HF" The reel foot is engraved"MADE IN U.S.A. PATENTED. When we received this reel there were issues with the click/pawl as well as the condition of the painted surfaces. The reel was stripped to bare metal and repainted with multiple coats of primer and enamel. The click/pawl was repaired. It was reassembled and lubricated. The reel now looks and performs ... moreas originally intended back in the 1950's. The retrieve is smooth and the click sounds out clearly. If you are looking for either a solid performing larger arbor fly reel that can pack on plenty of backing, or a hard to find addition to your vintage reel collection you won't find a better value than this 60 year old beauty from Shakespeare. Up for bid is a vintage fly reel an early Shakespeare Russell No. 1895 trout Fly reel. Reel made in USA in the 1930’s. The reel face is 31/2" in diameter and will hold most any trout/bass weight line. It’s a small antique reel and is a good configuration for on stream use. Good project reel condition and it would look great on a bamboo fly rod or fiberglass vintage fly rod. The reel is in average used condition and doesn't work properly. The pawls need to be adjusted to return the click to this reel. Please refer to the photos before bidding. A great project reel to fix and restore for use or as collectible.
