Metal spool latch cover, butterscotch knob, and sculpted pillars. The drag stem is exposed. The foot is tightly riveted on instead of screwed, the drag ratchet has only two indents, and the frame is marked Patent Pending. I believe the reel dates to about 1938. Reel shows much finish wear and the latch cover is tarnished. I lubed it and it cranks smoothly with that sweet Medalist click in the wind and purr on the pay out, and the drag works well. This is a 4" diameter reel with a 3/4" wide spool, will hold a lot of line. Ready to go for another 70 years! Thank you for looking! Very nice 1940s vintage Pflueger Medalist No. 1496 1/2 fly reel in the correct and original box with hang tag and instruction papers. Reel is marked Pflueger Medalist- Trade Mark- Made in U.S.A. on the face plate emblem. And also marked on the bottom of the face plate rim Diamolite Line Guard- No. 1496 1/2- Patented. Reel is in excellent condition and set up for a right hand retrieve. Mechanically everything is great. Vintage Pflueger Medalist Fly Reel No. 1496 1/2, "Patented", "Made in USA"
The Medalist No. 1496 1/2 was manufactured in Akron. Ohio from the early 1940s until 1958 when it was replaced by the Medalist No. 1498. This makes it one of the rarer models because most Medalist models have been made for decades. This reel has the rectangular Diamolite Line Guard and appears to have all its original parts right down to the screws. It has the very hard metal drag ratchet plate rather than the hard nylon plate the newer reels have. Although this reel has some normal loss of finish it is in excellent working condition.

1930's PFLUEGER MEDALIST NO.1496 Metal Spool Release Cover Round Line Guide
For sale is a rare. Early Pflueger Medalist No. 1496 Fly Fishing Reel. I believe this reel would have been manufactured probably in 1938 when the adjustable drag was added or in 1939, the last year this model was produced. The aluminum spool latch cover has the following stamped on it: Pflueger Medalist Trademark Made In USA. The Model No. 1496 is stamped on the reel body. The reel is equipped with a Round metal Diamolite line guard, Amber colored plastic handle, Aluminum spool latch cover, Sculpted cross pillars riveted to body and a Knurled metal drag that is missing the knob. The term Diamolite Line Guard is stamped in the 10:00 position of the frame on the handle side of the reel and the term Patent Pending is stamped at the 2:00 position on the same side. Cosmetically the reel shows its age with some paint wear/fading, but no dents. ... moreThe handle is completely intact. Mechanically the reel seems to work well with the qualification that when cranking the handle in the clockwise position, it reels free and easy with one tiny bump(click) on every full rotation. When reeling backwards(counter clockwise) it is a little harder reeling with a slight bump on every rotation. The spool can easily be removed from the housing by pushing on the pin mounted on the metal spool latch cover. This is a nice example of the hard to find old reels and is as described and shown. Pflueger Medalist 1496 1/2 Fly Reel w box & papers circa 1950
The 1496 1/2 model was replaced by the 1498 in about 1952. The 1498 had reinforcement plates added to the frame and the spool. This one from 1950 is in the right box and has the proper box insert 68B13. The next box insert 68B14 lists the 1498. This should be a nice reel for the collector with the small. Pan frame headed screws, the nickle silver low knob spool release button and surprisingly at least to me the bronze spindle bushing in the spool.
