This reel is stamped"Featherlight" on the front, No. 260" under the foot and"Pat. Jan. 14, 96" on the back, which of course is 1896. The click works well in both directions and the foot is full length and has not been filed. The spool spins smoothly. While the knob has been replaced, it fits very well, is secure and the proper size. This reels is the smaller version of the Featherlight 270 and 280. Returns are accepted within 3 days of receipt. On top of the frame it is inscribed"Expert" The front plate is inscribed"Pat'd Feb 23-86. Nov 23-86, Feb 5-89" The reel is 3" diameter and 2 3/4" deep including the handle. This is a Meisselbach Rainbow 631 fly reel. this reel is in excellent used condition. And rt hand retrieve. The reel diameter is 3 1/4" inches. Mechanically it spins great and the click is strong. Cosmetically the reel shows alot of use and a lot or wear. And there looks to be a replacement screw on the back side, it has some piant over spray also. Collectors Item: Here we have a featherlight fly fishing reel which was the forerunner of copy cat fly reels from the 1920’s to the‘60’s. In 1896. Gus Meisselbach patented the design and 3 raised piller Featherlights were created: the#280, 260, and#270. They were made of both bronze and nickel. This reel. Made of bronze-the#270, is in excellent working condition. The bronze and the wooden oak? or mahogany? handle is in excellent condition as well. This is a Vintage Meisselbach Catucci Symploreel#372 Fly Fishing Reel. Brown"Bakelite" finish. With silver nickel hardware and a dark green handle knob. The reel is in excellent working condition. It is missing one of the screws for the mounting bracket, but because of the way the reel is constructed, it still mounts firmly on a rod and doesn't wiggle. Cosmetically, it has some blemishes due to normal use, but still looks really good for a reel of this age. See the pictures) It is 3 3/8" diameter; 3/4" spool width; and weighs 5 3/4 ounces. Yawman& Erbe/H-I Auto Fly Reel Here is an early Meisselbach Expert No. 17 fly reel(3 inch plates) with the head plate click. Which was used from 1888-99. The grooved straight taper knob was used from 1895-1900, according to Phil White's excellent book, Meisselbach and Meisselbach-Catucci Fishing Reels: A Collector's Guide, so we know this reel dates to 1895. The head plate click works well in both direction. Also marked with three nineteenth century patent dates on the head plate. This brass reel shows scratches and pitting. A.F. Meisselbach Featherlight Fly Fishing Reel - Pat. Jan 14, 1896 - Great Reel
This auction is for a really nice little vintage A.F. Meisselbach Featherlight fly fishing reel. The patent date on the side says Jan.14:96. Dating it 1896. Cosmetically the reel has a lot of patina and shows wear but mechanically it is all in total working condition, turns smoothly and the clicker brake works very well. The spool can be removed by taking out the screw in the center. It is pretty straight for its age and all original. You can read all of the original writing. It says Featherlight on the handle side and No. 270 on the tip of the foot. You can see the condition of the item in the photos. The reel is a part of my personal fishing tackle collection. Meisselbach Expert Fly Reel, Exposed Click Gear, circa 1890's
Here is an early Meisselbach Expert fly reel(3 inch plates) with an exposed clicker gear. Which was used in the 1890's I believe. The reel spins fine, nut the clicker does stay in the on position. The nickle over the brass has pitting, but the majority of it is still there. This reel might fill in a gap in a collection, or just make an interesting piece to have! There are 3 patents dates on the reel, as shown in one picture, maybe this will help identify this reel for those who know these reels. Email me with any questions. Fishing Up for consideration is an Antique Meisslebach first version automatic fly reel made in Newark NJ between 1911 and 1918. The reel is marked Pat. June 30. 1914. Mechanically the reel functions very well for it's age but is a little stiff and could probably use some lube. Cosmetically the reel is in excellent condition with a nice German silver finish with the proper level of petina. The only cosmetic concerns include some minor scratches on the crank and on the back side of the reel. Despite the cosmetic concerns, this is a great, scarce reel that will make a great addition to a vintage tackle collection. Meisselbach automatic reels were not as innovative at many of their other reels. The first model(1911) did have some patentable features. You are bidding on one"EXPERT" fly reel. The spool measures 3" diameter. The body measures 3 1/2" diameter. The depth is approximately 2" including the handle. The foot is approx 2-1/4" long. In the top of the body is inscribed in"EXPERT" On the face of the spool is inscribed"PAT'D. FEB 23-86, NOV 23-86, FEB 5-89" The body and spool are nickel plated brass. The plating is in excellent condition. The handle is wood and is in excellent condition. There is a copy of this reel in worse condition than this one on display at an angling museum. Researching the web I found the following information: The Expert reel was the second reel produced by A. F. Meisselbach& Bro. It was a vertically aligned reel that the Meisselbach's envisioned as a fly reel. Trolling reel, or casting reel. The ... morefirst version of the Expert(1888-1895) had a notation that these reels had a bullet shaped knob and this version of the Expert is scarce in both sizes. Later editions had"expert" in an italic font rather than block font. A. F. Meisselbach. The son of German immigrants, designed his first fishing reel in 1885. At the tender age of 20 he received a patent on this reel and then convinced A.G. Spalding& Bros. to sell the reel for him. This reel was a simple single action reel, that we call the Amateur. Demand was brisk, and"Gus" soon convinced his brother, William, to go into the business with him and their Newark, NJ garage was soon humming with machine work. In 1888 they expanded their line rapidly and moved into a larger machine shop. That year they added the Expert Reel, the Universal Rod Holder and their famous line of Spring Bow nets. A.F. Antique Meisselbach Amateur fly fishing reel with thumb brake
A well-used vertical Meisselbach Amateur#7 with the thumb drag. Made from the late 1880s up until about 1919. As you can see, this reel has seen quite a bit of use, with some finish loss. I think the knob might be original, but it's attached with a rivet instead of a screw. This is a somewhat tough reel to find for Meisselbach collectors. Winner pays within 3 days with PayPal. Up for your consideration is this Nice Antique. Original Early J. C. HIGGINS. No. 319 Featherlight Fly Fishing Reel similar to Meisselbach brand. It appears to be brass or bronze but not sure. Reel is straight and works great. The clicker lock slide button works fine and clicks sharp and nice. The reel has your normal 65 plus years of gentle wear. Wear marks include wearing of the brass/bronze, scratches, pearl looking reel knob shows a little wear. The pearl looking knob how ever is not cracked and turns freely. It currently has a Cortland 333 LS 6 Fast Sink Level line with no backing. The original black paint finish has been taken off to expose the aluminum metal. It can be used to reel right or left handed, since the“clicker” works in both directions. This reel was used by my Dad as early as the 1920’s when he began fishing tributaries of the Stoneycreek River in South Central Pennsylvania near Lambertsville. Here is an original August F. Meisselbach"EXPERT" REELwith patent dates Patd Feb23-86. Feb5-89, Nov3-91. Setting on its mount, measures 3 1/4 inches tall. Made of nickel plated brass shows use, work fine. At some time some-one wanted to contour one of the base feet to fit the pole mount ring better. Recently bought this old reel at a barn sale. It was in with a box of old door knobs. I don't know anything about fishing equipment. So will just describe what I see here. It is approx. 2 3/8" diameter& about 2 1/2" from top to bottom& about 1 1/8" depth. The bottom is marked Featherlight NO. 260, and has 2 patent dates Jan. 14, 1896 and Dec. 27, 1904. The top is marked A.F. Meisselbach& Bro. Newark, N.J. Seems to be in good condition(maybe needs a little cleaning) Freely turns with the little black wooden handle. A.F. Meisselbach & Bro. Vintage Fly Reel 1896
This vintage reel has a pat. date of Jan.14.1896. It is listed in the"Fishing and Collecting Old Reel& Tackle& History With Albert J. Munger Book on page 29. It states that this reel is an Expert fly reel. It is nickel over brass and has click on reverse brace. There is one wooden knob directly on the spool. This reel is beautiful! Nice and smooth. It is 10" in circumference.
