Vintage Hardy Palakona " The Halford Knockabout" 2 Piece Split Cane Rod & Bag
This is a unique and beautiful rod built in 1963 according to the serial number H53572A. The overall length is 9' 6" and marked as 7# The wrapping is clean and guides are sound. it has a unique ferrule with a pin which is great condition. There is a screw out piece in the butt which I do not know the purpose. Comes with original bag that is faded and stained but is complete and functional with no rips. It has two"Stud lockjoints" which are a good snug fit. All of the rings are present and well attached, the top ring is agate lined and one side of the butt ring is whipped with copper wire for additional strength as are both sides of the joints. The rest ... moreof the green and burgundy whipping is in good order, the rod has a slight kink or"set" to the right in the middle section between the second and third rings. There is no cracking or crazing to the varnish that I can find and the cork handle is good and smooth. The aluminum butt has the Royal Appointment Crests. The fittings and adjustable"screw-grip" reel seat to the butt section are in aluminium, these do show some minor patches of discolouration and the rubber butt end is a little rough and discoloured. It has"lockfast" joints. Which are all marked with the number"2" they have retained much of their original finish and are a good snug fit. All of the rings are present and ... morewell attached, the top and bottom ring are agate lined. The burgundy whipping is in good order and the joints have been whipped in copper wire for additional strength. There is no crazing to the varnish but there are one or two small chips and fading in colour to the whipping underneath the rings. There is also a small section in between the 4th and 5th rings to the top section where the varnish has lost colour. The top section of the rod has a slight kink or set to the right. This is a Hardy's Palakona"Perfection" two piece split cane fly rod. It is marked on the split cane part of the butt section Palakona Regd No 246936 and the butt brass plate is marked A 4983. The literature suggests that the plate means that this rod was made in 1905 when Chelsea were elected to the Football League. Edward VII was on the throne and Sherlock Holmes was first solving mysteries.The butt section is 53" and the tip is 41.5" and I'll leave any further detective work to you.

Here is a nice vintage Hardy Bros split can fishing rod. No damage or repairs found. When together it measures about 82 inches long. The rod itself measures 68 inches with 2 inches of that fitting into the handle. I can not make out the writing on the pole near the handle. Includes the original carrying bag and spanner wrench. Bag has been poked through at the end and wrench has a little rust. Both easy to fix, but hard to find. Also includes the wood and cork cap that goes into the handle to protect the end. A wonderful antique Hardy Brothers Palakona Royal"Wee Murdoch" split cane rod. The rod has year number A75203. Which dates it to 1912. To H.M. King George V" is stamped at the base of the butt. Overall the condition is very good, rings and whipping are original, although the rod has clearly seen use. There are six sections; the butt. Middle and four tip sections. The rod, depending on which tip is used, measures 12' 7" 11' 7" or 9' 10" The butt section has a cork handle with a Hardy's Universal reel fitting and a red india rubber butt cap. The butt and tip rings are agate lined, the others are Hardy bridge guides. The cane has good colour and is free from damage. The brass ferrules and studlocks are in good working order and have lovely patina. The six section rod bag is original. The ferrule ... moreprotectors are turned from rosewood. This auction is for my Hardy Bros The Deluxe Palakona. 9ft 3 piece split cane fly fishing rod. In excellent condition, with original bag. Stamped E 56220 for 1943. I have owned the rod for the past 15 years and have never used it. It has only been out of the bag a handful of times since I have owned it. Rod in great overall condition. There are a couple of light scuffs on the cork handle as can be seen in photos. Everything is as should be. In original bag, but bag is ripped and dirty as can be seen in photos. 1937/38 vintage Hardys palakona gold medal split cane trout rod
offered for sale again because previous buyer failed to complete sale. Complete idiot. This rod was made in 1937/38 according to the registration number. Please check it yourself on line. Consequently it is a vintage. Nearly antique rod. Bought new in 1939 by my uncle he used it for a few years then kept it in storage. I inherited it in the late 1980s used it a couple of times then put it back into storage. The rod is one of the best mark of cane rods made by Hardys and as such is a serious collectors piece. But for a purist it could still be used for catching fish. It however is not a pristine new rod. And although I consider it to be in very good condition, I am not an expert. Beautiful Hardy"The Houghton" Palakona 9ft 6 inch Split Cane 3 Piece Fly Rod in Original Bag inc Spanner. Number E45613 made in 1938 3 Piece with"Screw lock" Joints that fit beautifully. Green Whippings and all Rings present. Even after 76 years. Holding this rod feels"right" Perfectly straight! Ferules stamped hardy. Reel seat also fully stamped and good condition.Some scratches on the black part. Writing on rod says regd trademark Palakona the Houghton. Unrefurbished and original. First ring on middle section needs re-whipping. Si last picture. Ring still present. I would also recommend re-whipping the tip eye. The Cork on handle has some damage to the bottom of it. See second last picture. The reel fitting is unaffected by it though. All in all a lovely used example of this quality rod that's 76 years ... moreold. Please note that this is a used example with many little"features" as would be expected with an original rod of this age Also the bottom cap/spike is missing. Vintage ~"The Hardy Wanless 9/10 Lb" Palakona" Split Cane Rod& Makers Bag PLEASE NOTE THIS IS ON THE UK SITE AND LISTED IN GB POUNDS. Vintage Hardy"Palakona The Hardy Wanless 9/10 Lb" 2 Piece Split Cane Rod. This lovely"Hardy's" The Hardy Wanless" rod is in"as found" condition. It has not been restored or repaired by us. The rod measures approximately 6 foot 10 inches long. including the handle) in overall length. The fittings and reel seat rings to the butt section are in alloy, these do have a little corrosionsur and blemishes. It has a suction joint. Which is a good snug fit and a ll of the rings are present and well attached. All of which are agate lined. The green and crimson whipping is in good order. The whiping to the rings may be replacements. The rod has a kink or"set" ... moreto the right just above the second ring. I can't find any splits to the cane and the varnish appears to be free from any crazing or cracking, however, there are the usual scuffs and marks you would expect on a well used rod of this age. The aluminum butt has the Royal Appointment Crests. Made by Hardy's, England" and the number"H50769A" 1956) Just above the handle the rod has"Regd. Trademark Palakona" and"The Hardy Wanless 9/10 Lb" hand written in indian ink. The rod has its' makers cloth bag. However, the zip has corroded and has come aaway from the bag down one side. This is a nice example of a classic"Hardy" rod and it has a lovely feel when held. Well balanced, sturdy, and it has taken on a super depth of colour over the years of use. We take great care to describe our items as clearly and honestly as possible. Including any faults or flaws that we may see.
