Up for auction here is a Vintage Shakespeare Split Bamboo Fly Fishing Rod 1357- 9' in unreal condition! The bamboo still has all its original tags clearly marked as you can see. The finish on the bamboo is better then most of the furniture in your house.All 4 pieces included in this auction.I have not seen one in this condition. Ever!Original soft case shows signs of wear especially at the top where it ties together.Part of the tie is missing and the flap is slightly coming apart.It has certainly done it's job taking care of this bamboo pole.Good luck on this one.

The No. 1315"Delu xe" has been attributed by many to E.W. Edwards Rod Co. Who supplied the Shakesp ear e Co. with se veral high- quality models for a number of years. Rodshaft still carries a partial"Shakespeare- Honor Built- Honor Sold" decal. While the sliding band is stamped"1315- B- 9 Shakespeare MADE IN U.S.A. PAT'D" The patent was granted to Wm. Shakespeare Jr. in 1924 for the reel seat design. The seat itself is correctly stamped"Made In U.S.A. I'm guessing this might be a 5 or 6 wt. As these models pre-date any rated line weight designations. Rod is in about Fine condition for these early models, ... moreshowing lots of overall wear. Bamboo is in nice condition. All four sections are the correct equal length, with one tip having a light set. Up for auction an Extremely Nice 1949-1952 SHAKESPEARE NO. A1362B"SPRING BROOK" 9 FT. 3/2 SPLIT BAMBOO FLY"TRADE" ROD WITH THE ORIGINAL LABELED BAG& LABELED FIBER TUBE. These were actually"Trade" rods built and supplied to the Shakespeare Company by the South Bend Bait Company, as Shakespeare never produced their own bamboo rods in the years leading up to and after WWII. Because the rodshaft carries the green Shakespeare decal that contains the words"Made In U.S.A. we know it's a post-war model built from 1949 to 1952. The"Spring Brook" was probably Shakespeare's most popular model over the years. I've included a photo of the original listing from Shakespeare's 1951 catalog. Rodshaft carries a perfect"Shakespeare Honor Built- Honor Sold" decal on three flats, with"A-1362B-9" ... morein white ink stamped on an opposite flat. Built with very nice light-colored Tonkin cane and comes equipped with extra tip section, agatine stripping guide, 11) hardened steel snake guides, South Bend welted ferrules, flip-ring hook keeper, NPB winding check, screw-locking"Lite-Lock" SB reel seat, solid cork Half-Wells grip and wound in multi-colored silk. Built in what Shakespeare described as"Bass" action, which I gather is a modern 6 or 7 wt. Rod is in solid Very Fine+ condition, showing only light evidence of use. Certainly, one of the finest Spring Brook models I've ever handled. Bamboo is perfect, with no splits, cracks or delamination whatsoever. All sections are the correct equal length and are arrow-straight. The original varnish is excellent, showing only faint evidence of use. Decal and markings are pristine. All wraps are solid and complete. All guides, tip tops, ferrules(which"pop" nicely) hook keeper and winding check remain very nice. Solid cork grip shows only light wear. Reel seat works perfectly. Very Early Shakespeare Split Bamboo Surf Rod Near Mint Condition
Stamped into the nickel-silver ferrule at the base of the top section of this rod is"1123-B-6 1/2 Shakespeare Made in USA" Shakespeare started making bamboo rods around 1920 and this very early example from an estate in the San Francisco Bay area is outstanding. This rod dates from 1931 and was known as Lyons Special Surf Casting Rod. The bamboo is tight and straight and the handle and rod have the original finish. It appears to have had little or no use. The guides are perfect as pictured and the wraps are tight and perfect. The turned wood handle is oak or hickory and retains the original finish. It comes with the original canvas sock which is in surprisingly excellent condition for its age. The top section is 79 inches and the handle is 28 1/2 inches. Split Bamboo Flyrod. It has no sticker. But there is a shadow where one was, and it is oval, which I think the Shakespeare sticker was. I would say this rod is in very good shape. It looks like the original finish. The eyelets are all there and the windings all look good with no fraying. The ferrells all look good and are tight. The cork has some nicks on it, but not too bad. The pictures should help a lot with judging condition. I measure the rod at 7' 8" not counting the handle. Again, this is a nice looking rod that I think could be used without any additional work. Late Teens To 1920s Antique Shakespeare Montague Split Bamboo 3' Casting Rod
Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE This an extremely rare Shakespeare- Chubb- Montague Split Bamboo Casting Rod. The rod is 35 1/2" one piece and is in original not refinished condition. The rod was made around the 1920s(possible earlier) indicated by the Shakespeare logo which says"Honor Built Honor Sold" Much of the logo is worn off. But can still be read) and the reel seat design. I contacted antique fishing rod expert Rich Mac McGaughey with pictures of the rod and he opined it was from the 1930s or older- thought handle looked like a Chubb handle(Chubb was bought out by Montague around 1920 and made many of the Shakespeare rods during this time. It also has Made In U.S.A. etched on the reel seat and the number 10 etched farther down on the tin/steel platted bronze handle. I have recently heard from another expert ... morewho says that Chubb was actually bought by Montague in 1891. He thought the rod was still made by Montague but thought the age was probably from the early 20s or late teens based on the reel grip design. The rod is in very good condition considering it is nearly 75 years old and has a few blemishes in the finish(see photos) but these are very minor. Cork handle has been chewed up a bit. The rod was manufactured in Milwaukee Wisconsin by the John Pritzlaff Hardware Co. Its constructed with split bamboo and measures 8" 9" long. Model Special#720. They were located at 333 North Plankinton Ave from 1875- 1919. This rod is quite old and still looks great. Goes together and comes apart smoothly. Scarce 1920-24 SHAKESPEARE #3102 "Steel-Kain" 5-1/2', 3/1 Split Bamboo "Pocket"
Up for auction a rather Scarce 1920-1924 SHAKESPEARE No.3102"STEEL-KAIN" 5-1/2 FT. 3/1 SPLIT BAMBOO"POCKET" or"TRUNK" ROD WITH DETACHABLE HANDLE AND ORIGINAL BAG. These early portable"trunk, suitcase or pocket" models were actually produced as Trade rods by the Montague City Rod Co. and sold exclusively through the Shakespeare Co. Although the Shakespeare rod database shows this model as being from 1924, I believe they were offered as early as 1920 and probably sold up to 1924. Despite the model name, these rods had nothing whatsoever to do with"steel" It was a marketing gimmick by Shakespeare(much like the"African Steel Cane" rods from Horrocks-Ibbotson and the"HinduVine" models from Montague) attaching an exotic name to the model in an effort to sell off vast supplies ... moreof lower-grade Calcutta cane(of which this rod is constructed) as Tonkin cane was fast-becoming the more preferred bamboo in the industry. Rodshaft carries the early"spiral banner" decal which reads"Shakespeare STEEL-KAIN" The only markings on the rod. Made of previously mentioned Calcutta cane and comes equipped with detachable handle& three 20" sections, first guide& tip top of genuine agate, other guides of file-proof steel, Montague's improved welted ferrules, simple sliding band reel seat, solid cork grip with nickel silver butt cap and wound in dark gold silk& green trim, with full intermediates. Rod is in about Very Good+ condition for these, showing overall wear, but displaying nicely. It has been lightly restored to original, with new wraps and varnish. Bamboo remains nice, showing several glue lines on this old Calcutta, but with no damage or delamination whatsoever. All sections are the correct equal length and are reasonably straight. Varnish and wraps are pristine. The banner decal is about 95% complete. All guides, tip top, ferrules and butt cap remain nice. The reel seat works perfectly, although the trigger has become deta

The eyelet wrappings are all good and the varnish finish is good with few scraped areas and few worn areas, so good may have been redone at some point. The handle looks good also. Check pictures. The circa is 1960. The original owner, Mr. Gale Labelle special ordered the Paul Young Company to make him this casting rod on his favorite William Shakespeare Company of Kalamazoo, Michigan casting rod handle assembly, to house his favorite Shakespeare fishing reel. Mr. Labelle's included level wind reel is a Shakespeare, Model No.1973, Sportcast. The circa is 1946. This reel is also marked Model GE, for it's 1946 date code. The rod is marked"Prosperity" also"A Paul H. Co. Rod" and also"GALE LABELLE" the original owner's name.
