I WAS TOLOD WHEN I BOUGHT THIS SOME TIME AGO THAT IT WAS A# 4 HEDDON CHIEFTAIN CASTING ROD. THERE ARE NO MARKINGS ON THE ROD OR REEL SEAT SO YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT THE PICTURES AND DETERMINE FOR YOURSELF.THERE ARE TWO AGATE EYES AND A AGATE TIP TOP.THE ROD IS IN GREAT SHAPE BUT ONE OF THE WRAPS IS COMING LOOSE AND CAN BE.SEEN IN THE PICTURE.THE BOTTOM SECTION MEASURES 24 1/2 INCHES AND THE TOP SECTION MEASURES 36 INCHES. I got this e-mail about the rod. Sorry. But your rod is not a Heddon rod. It's actually a Montague"Flash" model built sometime before WWII. It's been stripped of varnish and rewrapped, removing the Montague decal in the process. Still a nice rod. Good luck on it.

All eyelets seem to be secure. Can barely make out what I believe is the word"Tokyo Fishing" I have no expertise as far as fishing equipment goes. Bought this from elderly gentleman who said he brought it home from Japan in 1953. The tag shown is his handwriting. I am not sure if this is a fly rod or a bait casting rod. This is a wonderful Heddon#600 Bamboo Casting Rod. It is in great condition and I would call it excellent except for the reel seat which has cracked because of age. The wraps are all good and the varnish does show some age but is very nice. It comes with its original bag but no tube. This rod does seem to be quite stiff. Canvas bag and ties,circa 1930's or earlier. Pennell was a major eastern distributor of quality fishing gear. There are three pieces for the rod and one spare tip section as factory supplied. Note: Both tip sections are in excellent and pristine condition. The four sections nest in the four slot velvet lined holder.The canvas ties which bundle the rod sections into the holder are present and original. Main rod section is stamped on the alloy butt cap"PENNELL" The rod pieces measure from 33 1/2" to 34" long. So this makes ... morethis about an eight foot rod.The original factory canvas bag is included. There are some holes in the canvas bag. However, the bag has done its job well and the condition of the holder and the rod sections are exceptional. Original varnish is 90%present. The lovely and nicely engine turned alloy parts are all present and in outstanding condition. The cork grip is very, very lightly dis-colored from scant use and has an attractive patina about it. The tooled brass trumpet“agate guides” are present, original and securely attached. The lowest guide had become detached from the bamboo and I rewound with fly thread and that guide is now securely attached. 1934 HEDDON #551"Jim Heddon's Pal' Split Bamboo Bait Casting Rod w/2 tips
I have up for sale a very nice Heddon Pal split bamboo casting rod#551. This rod has 2 tips that are nice and strait. The guides are in great shape, the finish is great and lettering is in great condition. The bag(which looks like original) is in worn condition with the end being taped together and the grey canvas worn off in places. It has the original heavy cardboard tubes inside to protect tips. The end of the rod base is cracked and part of the end missing is the only thing damaged with the rod. It appears to be bakelite and could probably be replaced. The rod is about 5' 10" long. Checking on the patent numbers it was made in June 1934. Don't miss out on this great collectible!

The rod carries the lable name"NEW POWER" Inside the box it houses: the 8' fly rod w/ 1 extra tip& the 5' 4" bait casting rod(combo) 1 bobber, 1 wooden/bamboo line holder, nylon line pack, cat-gut line pack, 17 flies and 1 pack of#1 snelled hooks. The reel with this set was not originally in the box but was located with other vintage fishing equiptment. The reel has no name but is stamped"5-49" and"Made in Japan" It functions like a McGill/ Wright Freline Reel and it seems to be in very good condition. I have up for sale a very nice vintage split bamboo bait casting rod. The name on the oval label is W L Thompson. I have not found a casting rod like this anywhere online. I did find one fly rod with the same label on a forum. This rod is in absolutely excellent condition with perfect varnish. Wraps, guides with the red inserts. The red wraps are every 1" and looking unused. The cork is in great shape. There are 2 tips with this with no set in them and a canvas type bag. If anyone out there in ebay fishing land please let us all know where this came from and by whom. It came from an estate that most of the gentleman rods were from the 1930's so I assume this one is from same era. Don't miss out on this great collectible!

But looks very similar to the other Montague Rod i am selling I am not a collector or a fisherman so i dont know a lot about the Fishing rods. However i believe that the base of the handle is missing a rounded endcap piece that may have said montague as it looks like another rod that i have listed that has that rounded endcap piece attached. The base piece measures 43" the Tip piece measures just short of 35" and weighs in at 12 oz.I am selling the rod as a restoration or collectors piece but it does look ready to use. Very nice old split bamboo bait casting rod. It is 55" long. The cork handle is in good condition. The eyes are straight and not bent. The wrappings are tight. I could not find and identifying names on the rod. It looks like a Shakespeare according to a collectors book i have. There are no chips or cracks in the bamboo.

Rod has three sections with each from top measuring: 34 1/4' 31 1/4" and 34 1/4" Now,unless a rod has a name, especially these very old bamboo rods,I know very little! Up for auction a very nice CIRCA 1920 MONTAGUE CITY ROD CO. REV-O-NOC" 5 FT. 2-PIECE SPLIT BAMBOO BAIT CASTING*TRADE* ROD WITH CLOTH BAG& FIBER TUBE. These were produced as"trade" rods by Montague City Rod Co. for and sold exclusively by Hibbard, Spencer& Bartlett Co. of Chicago, who owned the trademarked"Rev-O-Noc" brand name of merchandise. H.S.B. Co. was a wholesale hardware distributor since 1882 and would become the forerunner to today's True Value Hardware chain. This example was likely built around 1920 or so. Reel seat is stamped with the"H.S.B. CO. REV-O-NOC" logo, the only markings on the rod. Built with high-grade Calcutta cane and comes equipped with nickel silver guides, tip top, winding check& butt cap, welted ferrules, sliding band reel seat, solid cork grip& foregrip and ... moreclosely wound in red silk& black trim, with full intermediates. There are 59 individual wraps. Rod is in solid Fine condition for these, showing moderate overall wear. Bamboo is perfect, with no splits cracks or delamination whatsoever. Both sections are the correct length and are reasonably straight. Varnish is brand new, so this is ready to enhance one's collection or be fished tomorrow. Wraps are solid and complete. All guides, tip top, ferrules, winding check and butt cap remain very nice. Reel seat works perfectly, with bold stamping. Solid cork grip and foregrip are in excellent condition. Put up in a period bag and fiber tube, which I've included for the purposes of shipping and storage. Both are very solid and serviceable. 1925+ HEDDON No.2-1/2 5' Split Bamboo Bait Casting Rod& Pflueger Supreme Reel This HEDDON No.2-1/2 5 FT. TWO-PIECE SPLIT BAMBOO BAIT CASTING ROD. The No.2-1/2 first appearance in 1913 and was produced until 1932. This rod has the reel seat stamped"HEDDON'S MADE IN U.S.A. first used in 1924) and is equipped with a solid cork handle, so we know it's made after 1924. Built with quality Calcutta cane, with Heddon's signature swelled butt and equipped with genuine red agate guides and tip top, nickel silver welted ferrules, n/s winding check& butt cap, sliding band reel seat with attached trigger, cork grip& foregrip and simply wound in black silk. The Rod is in Good condition. Showing light to moderate wear, mostly on the handle- best shown in the pictures. Bamboo is perfect, with no splits cracks or delamination ... morewhatsoever. Both sections are the correct length, with the tip section easily but firmly attaches to the lower section properly. All guides, tip top, ferrules, winding check and butt cap remain nice. Reel seat works perfectly, with bold stamping. Cork grips are still very good. The No.2-1/2 model was never offered with a tube. The Pflueger Supreme Level Wind Anti Backlash Reels runs smoothly. But the drag needs adjustment. Patent date of 1923, with serial# 12372, overall condition is very good, although the original owner etched his name on the side. This is a 4- section rod with 2- tips and comes in its original form rod case. This beauty was made in 1895 and sold as a minnow rod. The butt is a cigar shaped corked handle with an unmarked Chubb reel seat and is nickel plated. The rod has Welt Ferrules. Metal seats, Trumpet line guides, and Chubb funnel or tube top tips. The sections measure 22-5/8" long each and when assembled produce ... morea rod that is 66" long or 5'6" The action is a medium to medium heavy action and all windings and eyes are present. This beauty has trumpet line guides on 3- sections and Chubbs funnel or tube top tips. According to an 1895 Chubb catalog I found online this is a"Good" split bamboo rod and does not have the Chubb trade mark on it but we believe this to be the equal in material and quality of any rod sold at this price. All rods have 2- tips. Silk windings, Welt Ferrules, metal seats and are put in a wood form. The condition is as follows: the cork handle has numerous hook sets from the hook being set in it. The finish has spots missing the varnish as is typical of rods of this age. All eyes and tips are present and in good working order the eye windings are red silk and have darkened with age. The form rod case looks to have the ties replaced. Over all measurement of case is 1-12" wide. 23-1/2" long, and has metal cap ends. It's my pleasure to offer at auction a Nice and rather Scarce 1920-1922 HEDDON No.10 5-1/2 FT. 2-PIECE SPLIT BAMBOO"STANDARD TROUT" ACTION BAIT CASTING ROD WITH THE ORIGINAL LABELED BAG& LABELED ALUMINUM TUBE. A very tough early model to find in the original complete package, not mention in this nice of condition. The No.10 was always one of James Heddon's Sons' highest grade bait casting rods, since its introduction to the original 1909 rod lineup as the"Dowagiac $10.00 Rod" until the end of production in 1932. Because this example has the simple"HEDDON'S" stamped on the back of the reel seat, we know this was only built from 1920 to 1922. The rod shaft carries a virtually perfect"Dowagiac" bass decal. Made in the more desirable 5-1/2 ft. length and on a No.2 Ferrule(18/64ths) which ... moreHeddon referred to as their"Standard Trout" action. Built with very high quality Calcutta cane and comes equipped with genuine"yellow" agate guides& tip top, high-grade ferrules, nickel silver winding check, Heddon's patented locking band reel seat, solid cork tournament grip& foregrip(made from delicate 1/16" cork rings) and wound in three colors of silk. The No.10 was always about heavy cosmetics, with nicely ornamented and knurled hardware and, in this case, a staggering 167 individual wraps on just two sections. I've added a photo of the original listing from Heddon's 1922 catalog. Rod is in about Fine to Very Fine condition, showing moderate wear. Has a few replaced wraps on the tip and a fairly new overcoat of varnish, but is otherwise all-original. Bamboo is perfect, with no splits, cracks or delamination whatsoever. Both sections are the correct length and are arrow-straight. Varnish remains nice, so the rod is ready to be put to work, or just enhance one's collection. All wraps are solid and complete. Up for auction a very Nice CIRCA 1925-1930 HORROCKS-IBBOTSON CO. 5-1/2 FT. 2-PIECE SPLIT BAMBOO BAIT CASTING ROD WITH THE ORIGINAL CLOTH BAG& ADDED FIBER TUBE. This is an earlier model bait casting rod from Horrocks-Ibbotson of Utica, N.Y. likely produced from the mid 1920's to about 1930, as evidenced by the engraved logo on the reel seat. The fact that it is so closely wound could put it even earlier. Rod shaft carries the early Horrocks-Ibbotson diamond decal, while the reel seat is stamped"Horrocks-Ibbotson Co. UTICA, N.Y. Mfrs. Fishing Tackle- BEST BY TEST" within a similar diamond logo. A higher-grade baitcaster built with what appears to be Calcutta cane and comes equipped with a nicely swelled butt, genuine orange agate guides, offset orange agate tip top, high-grade ferrules, NPB winding check, metal butt cap, ratchet-style" ... moresliding band reel seat, solid cork grip& foregrip and VERY closely wound in three colors of silk. There are a staggering 144 individual wraps on the two sections alone. Rod is in solid Fine condition for these, showing moderate wear. Bamboo is perfect, with no splits, cracks or delamination. Both sections are the correct length and are arrow-straight. Varnish shows numerous overcoats but is in good condition overall. Rod shaft decal is nearly pristine. All wraps are solid and complete. All guides, tip top, ferrules, winding check and butt cap remain in very fine condition. Reel seat works perfectly, with bold stamping. Solid cork grip and foregrip are excellent. Put up in the original cloth bag, which remains in fine+ condition, with no holes or tears whatsoever. A non-original capped fiber tube has been supplied for purposes of shipping and storage.
