It was made using a"Genuine Sila-flex rod blank, a very sturdy unlabeled aluminum reel seat with threaded ring clamping hardware, and a thirteen segment cigar style cork grip. Considering its age, the rod is in amazingly good condition. The reel seat and clamping hardware are in good shape and function properly, the cork handle, while showing some ... moreevidence of usage, is still solid with no significant dings, gouges or missing cork. It has been cleaned but shows no evidence of having been sanded. The rod blank is in good condition and all of the ferrules, line guides and thread wraps are intact, straight and tight. The guides and all of the wraps are original. There is no evidence of any repairs anywhere. The rod most likely has been fished but it has been well cared for. There is an original label that reads"Arthur Tuck" Custom Built Rods" Fort Worth. Texas" and another that reads"Pacific Laminate" Sila-flex" Costa Mesa, Calif. Genuine Sila-flex Blank" is stenciled on the rod along with the Model# F 85. The F 85-3 pc. rods were listed in the 1956 Sila-flex catalog. The name of of the person whom I believe to have been the original owner"H.B. Jones" is hand written in script and written directly under his name is"Arthur Tuck Special. You could be fisihing with this one tomorrow. Brown wood looking rod finish, with red wrap, looks to be stainless eyes(2 eyes missing) and Red Anodized metal joints and reel mount. The Sila Flex sticker is still on it, with a BF 90 stamped on the rod and the word"Featherweight" stamped on the base of the main rod just below were the reel mounts. I also have a vintage blue rod bag that goes with it but not sure if it's original Sila-Flex issue(this is how I got it back in the mid 1980's) It is a 3 piece rod. The Sila-Flex label has a cut down the center and some of the wraps are rough or damaged(see pictures) Also. Three wraps have loose threads, which are under the main ferrule(butt section) bottom wrap above the ferrule and below top ferrule on the second section or middle section of the rod and always next to the ferrule(please see pictures) The tip is in excellent condition with no loose threads on any of the wraps(all tight) and the tip has not been broken. The metal aluminum tube has a label which says"CHAMPION MFG. BY CAL-AIR PRODUCTRS CO. LOS ANGELES" Other than the wrap or loose thread problems, this rod is in good condition. It has 3 spots on the corking w/ holes. I don't think it is that bad in my opinion.Has sliding reel rings w/ decal of seahorse w/ name of the rod It has a weird plastic piece to hold the reel in place when sliding the rings to the top. The cloth sack is a oiginal with the tag on it with the steel tube. The guides are stainless steel. It is a 2 piece rod. The rod is decent shape and lightweight. RI residents add 7% sales tax. Rod has no marking or decals other than the old Sila-Flex seahorse logo. Rod is approx. 72" long and appears to have original tip. Rod sock is marked- Sila-Flex Medallion MSP65-2. This early Sila-Flex Pack Rod model number SP58R-3 is very rare and in just about perfect near mint condition. This rod was manufactured in Costa Mesa California. Great wrapping color combination! It is a three piece rod and six feet long when assembled. The case is in excellent condition and the tube is a high quality and retains the original cap. The labels on the rod are in awesome shape. Up for auction are 3 vintage saltwater big game rods. The rods all appear to be custom built with no manufacture markings on the blanks. One rod has all aftco rollers. One has stainless steel ring guides, the last has conventional casting guides with aftco live bait casting roller tip and ring. The reel seat on the all roller is made by Sila-flex of Costa Mesa California and the other 2 reel seats are made by Varmac. No guides are missing on any of the rods. Vintage All-Angle reel seat with Sila-Flex rod Featherweight Products
I am selling a Freatherweight Products All-Angle reel seat with a Sila-Flex rod. This was the top of the line fishing rod of it's day(1950's) The All-Angle reel seat was a revolutionary way to get the right angle from your hand to the rod. The Sila-Flex rod was one of the first fiberglass rods to be made. In it's day this was an awesome rod to fish with. There are a few issue with this rod but nothing major. The reel seat is missing the butt cap and the cork is a little warn but not bad for it's age. The rod is missing 2 of the 5 guide eyes but otherwise in good shape. No breaks.
