Purchased in the 1960's from a traditional and very rustic Paradise Valley. Montana fly fishing pro shop, this genuine Hardy Bros. Alnwick) hexagon bamboo still looks to be in near mint condition- It was purchased as used. Fished about 6x, but looks pristine with no obvious wear, which is the condition I kept it in for the last 40+ years. The rod is a 2-piece with one matching tip. The cork grip is VERY clean and shows no marks or wear. The ferrules are squeaky clean. Smooth and tight fitting, while the guides(including the brass butt guide and chrome snake intermediates) are all original with no signs of wear at all. Windings and varnish are pristine and show no wear; Comes with the original blue sock and aluminum rod tube. In excellent to mint condition. The sections are straight as an arrow, although the tip piece appears to be about ½” shorter than the butt section. One thing I can truly attest to is that this rod lays out an awesome amount of line and has the backbone to take on even the nastiest of sea run brown trout! I’ve walked this rod into a fly fishing pro shop– They examined the piece and looked it up in their“bible” estimating that with a single tip it is valued@ $700.00. Should you have any questions. This is a unique and beautiful rod built in 1963 according to the serial number H53572A. The overall length is 9' 6" and marked as 7# The wrapping is clean and guides are sound. it has a unique ferrule with a pin which is great condition. There is a screw out piece in the butt which I do not know the purpose. Comes with original bag that is faded and stained but is complete and functional with no rips. This sale is for a 2-PIECE. VINTAGE HARDY PALAKONA ROD, THE PERFECTION bearing the serial number E29152 which I believe. Dates the rod to 1931. This 2-Piece rod. Constructed of split bamboo bears all the expected Hardy hallmarks: To the rod itself are the inscriptions: Palakona Reg d No. 246936 The“Perfection” Rod To the Reel Screw Fitting Ring: PAT. N o 21875/22 To the Reel Screw: E21952 MADE BY HARDY BROS LTD ALNWICK ENGLAND A Depiction of the HARDY CREST and“By Appointment” The lower section of the rod measures approximately 55 2/ 16” end of butt to tip of brass fitting) Whilst the top section measures approximately 44 10/ 16“tip of top eye to tip of brass fitting) The rod appears to be in pretty good condition. The cork handle is complete and sound and the rest of the rod. Eyes and brass fittings all look good other than some minor varnish ... moreloss. To the naked eye the rod appears straight. I am no expert in fishing equipment and I therefore encourage all prospective buyers to contact me with any questions whatsoever so as to enable themselves to form their own opinion regarding condition and quality. All of the rings are present and well attached, the top ring is agate lined and one side of the butt ring is whipped with copper wire for additional strength as are both sides of the joints. The rod measures 12 foot 6 inches. including the handle) in overall length. The fittings and adjustable"screw-grip" reel seat to the butt section are in aluminium, these do show some minor patches of discolouration and the rubber butt end is a little rough and discoloured. It has"lockfast" joints. Which are all marked with the number"2" they have retained much of their original finish and are a good snug fit. The burgundy whipping is in good order and the joints have been whipped in copper wire for additional strength. The Tips are of slightly differing lengths with the longer one being about 50 1/8" and the shorter one being 44 1/4" I am uncertain if these two tips were originally designed in two differing lengths or if the shorter one has a replaced tip end due to prior breakage and refurbishment. Even though not fly fishing, still, it's difficult for me to cut these items loose. Althogether we have a nice antique fly rod: THE PALAKONA" ... morea Palakona cane two piece which is listed here. It came with a hard to find antique 3-1/4" Sunbeam reel(THE SUNBEAM) made by Hardy Bros. Ltd. Alnwick, England. This is a MK II reel. Original patent date of 1888 duplicated. Making the reels manufacture date approx. 1908. There's a 3" S. Allcock Ltd. reel called"the MARVEL" that dates to the same time frame as the Sunbeam reel. There are also a couple of old tins packed with various old flies as well as a newer high quality fish gaf. A nice Sheffield hunting/ fishing knife and then lastly a German made Solingen fishing tool with sheath. These were all owned by a Bitish military officer that took his fly fishing seriously and like all serious anglers. He took care of his tools. Which leads us back to the item in THIS AUCTION. a two(2) piece Hardy Bros. fly rod: The Palakona" Rod When joined. It measures 112-1/2" long(9' 4-1/2" and has nine(9) guides. I've inspected the rod and am happy to report that it's without splits. The guides are all in-line and undamaged. They seem to be the original guides. The string wraps are intact as well. The rod itself measures 68 inches with 2 inches of that fitting into the handle. I can not make out the writing on the pole near the handle. Includes the original carrying bag and spanner wrench. This is a nice Vintage. Classic 2 piece Spinning Rod made in England by Hardy. It is the" Palakona" The Hardy Wanless" 6lb rod made in 1955. The Registration number is H4592. This has been hanging in a garage of a riverfront home in northern NY for quite some time. The ferrules look good and clean but will need a little lubrication. The finish on the rod is in good condition. No visible chipping, cracking, or crazing. This is a 2 pc rod, the butt end has 1(one) larger ring/guide and the tip section has 6(six) smaller rings/guides. All of the rings/guides are tied tightly with crimson and green whipping. The larger 1st ring may have been rewrapped on the cork side. as the whipping is a bronze color.yet it looks to be original(picture#4) All 7(seven) rings do show some minor rust, the last ring is lined(agate) The cork handle ... moredoes show some use, with a few areas where small pieces of cork have disappeared(see pics)probably from a fly hook. I have owned the rod for the past 15 years and have never used it. It has only been out of the bag a handful of times since I have owned it. Rod in great overall condition. There are a couple of light scuffs on the cork handle as can be seen in photos. Everything is as should be. In original bag, but bag is ripped and dirty as can be seen in photos. A very nice& scarce Hardy's Bros of Alnwick. England, cane rod. 11ft 6" 3 piece- with two tip sections in hard protective sleeve. The No.3 A. H. E. Wood(Steel Centre) Palakona" In very good condition complete with the Hardy ferrule stoppers. There is one ring missing from one of the tip sections, all the whipping looks OK, rings look good too. Due to its age there are some discolourations and marks, so may need some TLC- but it does't look like it has been used a lot. It seems very straight with no set that I can see. Vintage ~"The Hardy Wanless 9/10 Lb" Palakona" Split Cane Rod& Makers Bag PLEASE NOTE THIS IS ON THE UK SITE AND LISTED IN GB POUNDS. Vintage Hardy"Palakona The Hardy Wanless 9/10 Lb" 2 Piece Split Cane Rod. This lovely"Hardy's" The Hardy Wanless" rod is in"as found" condition. It has not been restored or repaired by us. The rod measures approximately 6 foot 10 inches long. including the handle) in overall length. The fittings and reel seat rings to the butt section are in alloy, these do have a little corrosionsur and blemishes. It has a suction joint. Which is a good snug fit and a ll of the rings are present and well attached. All of which are agate lined. The green and crimson whipping is in good order. The whiping to the rings may be replacements. The rod has a kink or"set" ... moreto the right just above the second ring. I can't find any splits to the cane and the varnish appears to be free from any crazing or cracking, however, there are the usual scuffs and marks you would expect on a well used rod of this age. The aluminum butt has the Royal Appointment Crests. Made by Hardy's, England" and the number"H50769A" 1956) Just above the handle the rod has"Regd. Trademark Palakona" and"The Hardy Wanless 9/10 Lb" hand written in indian ink. The rod has its' makers cloth bag. However, the zip has corroded and has come aaway from the bag down one side. This is a nice example of a classic"Hardy" rod and it has a lovely feel when held. Well balanced, sturdy, and it has taken on a super depth of colour over the years of use.
