Ultra Rare Hardy All Brass Perfect 2 5/8" Houghton Dry Fly Reel c1890's
Up for action is an Ultra Rare Hardy All Brass Perfect measuring 2 5/8" in diameter. This size is actually referred to as the"Houghton" Dry Fly reel made for the elite Houghton Fishing Club who's members included Royals and Aristocrats sporting trout on the famed Thames River. England during the early 1890's. The reel is in near excellent but uncleaned condition as pictured, with no cracks anywhere. The reel's action is silky smooth with a strong click and adjustable drag with a creamy butter handle. Please take note that the center screw has broken off(as pictured) but can be easily repaired. The reel case is NOT included in the bidding.

Click spring and pawl, single action, DUPLICATED, MARK II, contracted(narrow) drum, vintage fly reel made by Thomas Armstrong(T.A.G maker's mark on inside of reel frame) for Hardy Brothers of Alnwick, England. Thomas Armstrong worked for Hardy Brothers from 1928 to 1978. This particular reel was probably made sometime before World War II because it has brass fittings. Brass was extremely hard to come by during WWII as most of it was rationed for ... moreuse in the making of shell casings. Reel is 3 and 5/8 inches in diameter by 1 inch wide(excluding handle and spool spindle cap) Most suited for 5-8 weight lines/rods, capacity: WF6F plus 250 feet of 20lb Micron backing. This reel is in excellent condition cosmetically with typical rim wear, small scuffs/scrapes here and there and some surface dulling but with a majority of the reel's original gray-leaded finish still present. Mechanically the reel is very sound and tight, original full length un-filed ribbed brass foot(PAT.No 272409) duplicated MARK II, strong check spring and pawl, original black ebonite handle(no cracks) rim tension adjustment screw, telephone centre latch(REG. 734897) Reel can be fished with right or left hand retrieve by simply inverting the single click pawl. Minimal"drag" regulation may be applied via an adjustment screw head located on the rim of the reel which causes a tension spring to exert pressure on the click pawl. I believe this is an early version of the"Uniqua" Made around 1905, the check mechanism appears to be pre 1905 and there are no"duplication" marks stamped on the reel. Internally. The reel is stamped"D6" I believe this is the makers mark for"William Dingley" the master reel maker who worked for"Hardy Brother's" between 1891-1911. ... moreThe reel still revolves well with a good smooth action. However there is some play when the spool is rocked. The horseshoe release latch works fine and the handle is well attached and sturdy, as is the alloy foot. The reel has retained much of its' original finish. However, the are some small patches of surface corrosion to the an edge section of the back plate, as well as the usual scuffs and marks you would associate with a well used reel of this age. All adds to its' character and charm. So evocative of times and anglers past. This would be a great addition to nay fishing collection. One of the pillars has a small line burn grove and it also has the usual scratches and scuffs that you would expect from the years of use. Very early vintage Hardy Perfect. Trout fishing Fly Fishing Reel Central spindle is the rare Tapered variation. i'm no expert but when measured with a vernier caliper the spindle base measures 7.44mm. Upper of spindle measures 7.24mm(dia) Reel has a spool diameter of 2.7/8" 5/8" width internal(if I'm correct) Reel face plate reads as follows"Hardy's Alnwick Patent" center of spool face reads"To Dismount. Turn screw" Internally and on rear of face plate the reel is marked 2, along with the initial"A.B" within a circle. A.B are the initials of Alfred Broadley. Period 1893 Handle is of Ivorine. Reel seat/foot is of brass and stamped"England" Other than the light age/old finish wear the Reel is in truly beautiful. Fully operative condition Ratchet check operates crisply. Spool rotates ... moresmoothly with no rubbing. the only very minor thing i will mention is a very light scratch near the central spool screw fastening.this was present prior to my ownership. Vintage ~ c1930 ~"Hardy" ~"The Perfect Duplicated Mk.II" 3 7/8" Fly Reel PLEASE NOTE THIS IS ON THE UK SITE AND LISTED IN GB POUNDS. Vintage Hardy"The Perfect" 3 7/8" Fly Reel This Hardys"Perfect" reel is in"as found" Used condition and has not been restored or repaired. The reel has"The Perfect Fly Reel. Made By Hardy Bros Ltd, Alnwick, England, Pat. Nos. 24245& 9261, Duplicated Mark II" impressed in to the back plate. The reel still revolves well with a good smooth action and there is no play when the spool is rocked. The smooth brass foot and handle are well attached. Although the handle may have been re-attached a t some point, and the rim regulator screw moves fine. The reel has retained much of its' original finish. But does have the usual scratches and scuffs ... morethat comes from the years of use. We take great care to describe our items as clearly and honestly as possible. The telephone release latch works fine and the ebonite handle and smooth brass foot are well attached and sturdy. The reel still retains much of its' original finish. One of the pillars has a small line burn grove and the reel also has the usual ... morescratches and scuffs that you would expect from the years of use. Here we have for auction a 3 5/8" combination alloy& brass salmon fly reel. Horn handle which turns freely set with brass screw. Brass plate wind face with alloy frame& backplate. Brass unfilled straight foot. Three brass pillars. Retaining good overall finish although slight pitting here and there…see pics! Sounds a delightful crisp click from the constant check. Hardy Uniqua, 3 3/8" Diameter Trout Fly Reel. Good User.
This is a good working example of the Hardy Uniqua. 3 3/8th inch diameter Trout Fly Reel. The reel has a ribbed brass foot and a two screw locking latch. It has a black winding handle. The reel is fitted with the duplicated Mk II Check Mechanism. As stated above the reel has lost a lot of its finish. It could probably do with removing the lot and giving it a polish. Having said that. If you want a reel of renown to use and are not too worried about its looks this is the one for you. If you have any questions please get in touch.
