Vintage Grice and Young Royal Avon Supreme Centrepin Trotting Reel This is a nice vintage centrepin reel. Made by Grice and Young of Christchurch,England. It is a narrow spool. Centre pin reel designed for trotting. The reel(spool) measures 4 3/8 inches in diameter. The spool is narrow at approx 5/8 inch wide. The spool depth is also shallow at about 3/8 inches. It has a ventilated spool.With 8 struts. It is in very good working order. With an adjustable brake. With the brake lever in the off position the reel spins smoothly for ages. With no significant wobble. There is a reversible line guard to allow for left or right hand wind. The finish is generally very good and clean. The spool has few small areas of loss of finish.But over 99% remains on the spool. As far as i can see the body of the reel has a loss of finish to one very small area. ... moreThere is some ingrained mud on one part of the bobble finish.But overall the appearance is very good. Internally the condition is very good.Although the moving parts have been well coated with grease,which maybe need renewal? Overall. There is just a hint of play in the spindle. But I am being very picky. With a good flick it spins silently for over one minute. The ratchet is strong and the variable drag works fine.
