Vintage 4" Wooden Starback Fishing Reel. Heaton Latch
I have for sale a Heaton. 4" Wooden Nottingham style, Centrepin Fishing Reel. The reel has a star shaped back with a ratchet button mounted on the star. The reel is in good overall condition with some scratches and marks to the wood. You are seeing the reel in the same condition as I received it. Some treatment with a good wood polish will bring this up well. The reel is a good runner. It has a 4 screw Heaton locking latch, twin handles and a stabilised ratchet guide. The star shaped back was introduced as a means of preventing the wooden back from warping. The guided ratchet plate was a further development to stop the ratchet spring from jumping off the pawl. Early Heatons Wooden Starback Reel. 4". Named
I have for sale a 4" named Reuben Heaton Wooden Fishing Reel with a brass Starback. The starback has the ratchet switch mounted on it. the ratchet operates smoothly and efficiently. i would guess bthat the reel is made of Walnut. It is unusual to find a reel bearing the Heaton name. Even more so when you consider the huge number of reels they made. On this occassion the name can be found on the stem leading to the reel seat. The winding handles are made of some man made material and as you can see from picture 4. The Mice have taking a liking for it and both have been nibbled. Picture 5 shows the inrerior and the two lead inserts used to balance the spin of the drum. You have probably seen hundreds of reels in this format but this one stands out from the crowb because of that name stamped on the foot.

Superb Improved Wooden Starback Reel. Heaton Latch. 4"
There is no makers name on the reel but there is little doubt it was made by an accomplished manufacturer. the attention to detail is excellent. It could have been made by Heatons. Smith& Wall or perhaps Allcocks. The reel measures 4" in diameter and the spool has a 1" gape. Rim to rim. It measures 1 7/8" This is a starback reel and has an on/off ratchet switch located on one arm of the starback. The ratchet is strong and it operates efficiently. I have called this reel the Improved model because it incorporates virtually all the devises emplyed to maintain its efficiency. Wooden reels were by the nature of the material use susceptible to warping. Especially when the wood get wet or is left to bake in the Sun. the star back was in itself a form of bracing to prevent warp across the grain. The next feature is a lining inside ... morethe rim of the back plate. originally these were brass. The brass was later replaced with aluminium, a lighter material. Then came the an metal backplate to the spool. Again, brass was used originally but was replaced with aluminium, again for lightness. The reel had a caged drum, the outer rim of which sat in a recess on the inside of the wooden spool. The spool locks onto the spindle using a 4 screw Heaton style latch. It has finely turned horn handles. The ratchet cog and the pawl are made of similar tempered steel. The pawl spring appears to be aluminium. An additional feature of this reel is that the stabilising guide on the ratchet switch. This ensures the pawl engages correctly with the cog rather than slipping to the side. This reel is a cracker and is a first class example of its type. It also works very well so would suit the person who likes to use old tackle as well as being a collectable.

4 1/2" Heaton's Nottingham Ebonite Starback Centre Pin Reel c. 1900
4 1/2" Heaton's Nottingham Ebonite Starback Centre Pin Reel dating to around 1900/1910. In very good condition throughout. Runs freely and well without any trace of a wobble and only the faintest of knocking when kept in a warm room. Like all ebonite reels it contracts in cold temperatures making the rim tighten up and the spool knock as a result. The reel has a brass backed drum with twin tapered horn handles and brass four screw spring release latch. A Bickerdyke line guard, a German nickel silver rim, a brass starback foot of period style with a sliding optional check button. Vintage starback 4" wooden centre pin reel A W Gamage Ltd Holborn
This is a nice heavy nottingham style 4" starback reel. Stamped on the rear for A.W. Gamage Holborn. Twin handles on brass mounts, rear on/off check button, good unfiled straight foot, winds well with good strong check. Overall very good clean condition centre pin with what appears to be a brass back to the drum. The only condition issue I can see is a 1 3/4" long chip to the inner edge of the backplate, where it has been dropped at some point. This is shown in photo 3. I am selling a Nottingham Star back fishing reel. It came out of a loft and had probably been there for decades. The reel has no makers name on it but is extremely well crafted. An Alcock? The reel spins beautifully on its own. Please view all pictures for condition. There is a screw missing on one of the stars and two very small screws missing on one of the handles. An unusual 3 1/2ins. Caged Nottingham Starback Centre Pin Reel dating to around 1900. Clearly converted from a standard centre pin the brass pillars of the cage have been tapped off with copper pins. The original handles of the reel have been removed and a single handle added. The original lineguard has also been removed and been replaced with a porcelain lineguard. RARE 4 INCH SLATER STYLE STARBACK COMBINATION WOOD AND EBONITE FISHING REEL
Scarce 4 inch wood and Ebonite fishing reel with three screw Slater latch. Brass star back and foot.The back plate has a German nickel silver rim with a brass cage.The handles are horn/bone.The reel makes a lovely clicking sound when the ratchet is engaged. V good vintage allcocks nottingham starback slater latch wooden fishing reel
for sale here is a very good nottingham style starback wooden reel(possibly mahogany) foot is good and straight and unfiled and stamped by allcocks of redditch with brass david slater sliding centre latch. Twin handles in darker wood on teardrop brass plates, starback backplate with sliding check latch, overall a nice example with loud audible check and runs very smooth too and spool sits nice and flush on the spindle with no wobble or slackness, anyway look at the fotos.please see my other listings of hardy and other vintage fishing items this week.

huge vintage nottingham wood brass starback fishing reel 6" heatons slater
for sale here is a very very good vintage nottingham style wooden fishing reel.Surely a heatons, slater or smith and wall, 6" size, huge bulbous charolais cowhorn handles on unusual brass circular plates which are screwed and rivotted from the inner spool, brass wingnut and anti clockwise locking drumscrew, full straight unfiled brass foot/spine, on/off check slider to rear, works well and spins true, good check, spool has brass back flange and theres a brass circular insert running around the inner frame, the spindle is also held in with a locking screw, very nice clean and tidy example with no chips or splits or buckles, there are some very high quality features on this reel and i woulkd say its the best one i have ever had, its certainly the biggest, so very well made this one.its a cracker. please see my other listings of hardy and ... moreother vintage fishing items this week. very heavy hence postage.
