All of the mechanical and functional aspects are in very good condition and the reel feels and sounds very smooth. There are no bent or warped parts. There are some abrasions and scratches on this item(as shown in pictures) Someone has scratched their initials(NFM" NFFM" and what looks like"VIFF" into 3 interior sections on the reel(not visible when reel is operationally assembled) and 2 exterior areas(where it is mostly visible under the right light) Please refer to the pictures(I have documented these 5 areas) The black paint on the interior of the spool is worn and there are several scratches including one of the initialed areas(refer to photo) The top of the drag adjustment knob has 2 small nicks. The other 2 interior areas where the initials occur are approximately 1 inch from the exposed bearings on both sides of the body of the reel. The interior spool side is where it appears to have the"VIFF" There is also the outline of what appears to be some sticker that has fallen off(located next to the exposed bearings in photo) The final areas are on the exterior front and back face of the reel and I did not notice them until I had the reel under the perfect light(I owned this reel for years without seeing this) Also. There is an abrasion on the frame at the bottom of the reel(next to the bottom post) If you are considering buying this reel then you are most likely a serious angler and or collector so please study ALL pictures very closely with the zoom function. Ultra Rare Hardy All Brass Perfect 2 5/8" Houghton Dry Fly Reel c1890's
Up for action is an Ultra Rare Hardy All Brass Perfect measuring 2 5/8" in diameter. This size is actually referred to as the"Houghton" Dry Fly reel made for the elite Houghton Fishing Club who's members included Royals and Aristocrats sporting trout on the famed Thames River. England during the early 1890's. The reel is in near excellent but uncleaned condition as pictured, with no cracks anywhere. The reel's action is silky smooth with a strong click and adjustable drag with a creamy butter handle. Please take note that the center screw has broken off(as pictured) but can be easily repaired. The reel case is NOT included in the bidding.

The only thing i can see that i must point out is the tiny bit of pitting on the one part of the edge, you can see this in pics it really makes no difference to the reel at all. it has chunky black handle and ribbed brass foot. this is a sort after reel at a great price ready for the new season.i do not wish to put down any other salmon reels for sale on ebay but if you look you will see that the salmon perfects i have for sale are in far better condition compared to the others listed and far cheaper starting price. Vintage Hardy 4 1/4" Perfect Salmon Fly Reel. Duplicated MkII Check Mechanism.
I have for sale a 4 1/4" Hardy Perfect Salmon Fly Reel with a wide spool. The reel has the Duplicated Mk II Check Mechanism. It has a smooth brass foot. Nickle silver reverse thread drum locking screw, a rim mounted tension adjuster, Ebonite handle and a rotating nickle silver line guide. The reel has at some stage been put away wet and this has caused some staining to the face of the reel as well as the two spots of corrosion to the rim which I have mentioned above. I am sure the face can be cleaned up if you wish to make it more presentable. The two bites of corrosion are shown in picture 6. Picture 7 shows another view of the area above the pillar. There remains a good depth of metal to the rim and whilst it would be folly to say those areas have not been weakened by this. They do not render the reel unusable. There is no chance of ... morethis failing under normal use. The foot has been lightly filed at one end. There is no excessive play in the reel. I would describe it as a good usable reel. Vintage Hardy"The Perfect" Mark II 2 7/8 Fly Reel This fabulous Hardy's"The Perect" mark II fly reel is in"as found" Used condition and has not been restored or repaired by us. The reel measures 2 7/8 inches across and has"The Perfect Fly Reel. Made by Hardy Bros. Ltd, Pat. Nos. 24245& 9281, Duplicated Mark II" impressed in to the back plate. The reel still revolves well with a good smooth action and there is no"play" when the spool is rocked. The rim regulator screw works fine and the ebonite handle is well attached. As is the smooth brass foot. The handle does not revolve but I haven't tried to force it to avoid causing damage. The smoke agate ... moreline guide has a small crack. The holder has"Hardy's Pat" impressed in to it. The reel has the usual scratches and scuffs that you would expect from the years of use but I can't find any cracks or splits to the drum or the cage. This is a good example of a classic"Hardy" reel and it is so evocative of times and anglers past. We take great care to describe our items as clearly and honestly as possible. Here we have for auction a perfect pattern alloy trout fishing reel in an absolutely beautiful condition complete with brass screw- removable ebonite handle. Ventilated spool, brass strap over rim tension screw, straight- smooth unfiled brass foot, brass tension mechanism and blue steel pawl. This quality reel little reel has a very strong constant check that sounds a nice firm click. The tension screw& mechanism work just fine applying good tension to the spool. Hardy Perfect Mark II. 2 7/8 Inch, reel with agate ring bought by my grandfather, probably in the early 1930s, as illustrated in the 1931'Hardy's Anglers' Guide' Good condition but with minor damage commensurate with age- small dents in chassis rim(see photos) and a little play in the mechanism. Ratchet tension screw works well and ball bearings in good condition. Described in catalogue as"Made of'Alumin' standardized and interchangeable in all parts. Very early vintage Hardy Perfect. Trout fishing Fly Fishing Reel Central spindle is the rare Tapered variation. i'm no expert but when measured with a vernier caliper the spindle base measures 7.44mm. Upper of spindle measures 7.24mm(dia) Reel has a spool diameter of 2.7/8" 5/8" width internal(if I'm correct) Reel face plate reads as follows"Hardy's Alnwick Patent" center of spool face reads"To Dismount. Turn screw" Internally and on rear of face plate the reel is marked 2, along with the initial"A.B" within a circle. A.B are the initials of Alfred Broadley. Period 1893 Handle is of Ivorine. Reel seat/foot is of brass and stamped"England" Other than the light age/old finish wear the Reel is in truly beautiful. Fully operative condition Ratchet check operates crisply. IT CAN ONLY BE ONE OF 2 THINGS, THE REEL WAS REFURBISHED SOON AFTER THE SECOND WAR, OR MY PREFERRED OPTION IS THAT AFTER WW 2 HARDY USED UNUSED SPARE PARTS OF REELS IN STOCK TO MAKE UP ORDERS AS MATERIALS WERE VERY SCARCE. THE FITTINGS HAVE ALL BEEN APPLIED AFTER THE FINISH AND THE NICKEL INSERT IN THE LINE GUARD BEZAL AGAIN IS COMMON OF THIS PERIOD DUE TO THE LACK OF AGATES. Vintage ~ c1930 ~"Hardy" ~"The Perfect Duplicated Mk.II" 3 7/8" Fly Reel PLEASE NOTE THIS IS ON THE UK SITE AND LISTED IN GB POUNDS. Vintage Hardy"The Perfect" 3 7/8" Fly Reel This Hardys"Perfect" reel is in"as found" Used condition and has not been restored or repaired. The reel has"The Perfect Fly Reel. Made By Hardy Bros Ltd, Alnwick, England, Pat. Nos. 24245& 9261, Duplicated Mark II" impressed in to the back plate. The reel still revolves well with a good smooth action and there is no play when the spool is rocked. The smooth brass foot and handle are well attached. Although the handle may have been re-attached a t some point, and the rim regulator screw moves fine. The reel has retained much of its' original finish. But does have the usual scratches and scuffs ... morethat comes from the years of use. We take great care to describe our items as clearly and honestly as possible. BOTH THE REEL AND CASE HAVE BEEN BLOCK ENGRAVED, ALSO THERE IS INDIAN INK WRITING REFERRING TO THE MATCHING ROD ON THE FRONT LIP OF THE LID, ALL AS PER PHOTOS, THE REEL RETAINS MOST OF ITS ORIGINAL LEAD FINISH AND IS FITTED WITH THE SCARCE FAT EBONITE HANDLE. ALL IS GOOD AND TIGHT, SOME OTHER STAINING TO THE CASE. THE REEL HAS A SMOOTH BRASS FOOT WHICH WOULD DATE THIS REEL TO THE 1920'S, AGAIN ALL AS PER PHOTOS. The area in question has the original finish intact and it looks like a machined groove. It may have been a manufacturing fault. An exceptionally fine and rare Hardy Brothers of Alnwick. 4" 1/4 Brass Face Perfect Salmon fly reel presented in outstanding original condition. With smooth correct brass foot, bridged rim mounted tension adjuster with turks head locking nut, ivorine handle, patented 1903 square line guard and 1904 heavyweight check and nickel silver drum retaining screw. Reel is right hand wind and has a very strong check. Retaining near all of its original leaded finish and faceplate, which is stamped with maker's Rod in Hand and straight line logo, having good original finish.
