The reel measures 3 3/4 inches across and has"The St. George Reel. Brit. Pat. No. 658472, Size 3 3/4" Made By Hardy Bros. Ltd. England" impressed in to the back plate. The ribbed brass foot is sturdy and well attached, as is the ebonite handle. The agate lined line guide has"Hardy's Pat" impressed in to it and shows minimal signs of wear, the rim regulator screw moves fine. The reel revolves well with a good smooth action and the two screw release latch works fine. There is no play in the reel when the spool is rocked. The reel has retained much of its' original finish. However, there is some loss around the handle as well as usual scratches and scuffs that you would expect from the years of use, but all adds to its' character and charm, so evocative of times and anglers past. We take great care to describe our items as clearly and honestly as possible. Including any faults or flaws that we may see. The agate lined line guide appears to a replacement and there is a hairline crack across the rim by the line guide, however the reel is still solid and ... moresturdy, the rim regulator screw moves fine. The reel revolves well with a good smooth action and there is no play when the face plate is rocked. The three screw release latch works fine. The reel has the number"12" impressed in to the rear of the spool. The reel has the usual scratches and scuffs that you would expect from the years of use. But all adds to its' character and charm, so evocative of times and anglers past. We take great care to describe our items as clearly and honestly as possible. Vintage Hardy St. John 3-screw with original box + pokey bag
This auction is for a Hardy St. John(3 7/8" with the early 3-screw latch cover. It is right hand wind and has the ribbed brass foot. The foot appears to be full length and not shortened. Filed or otherwise altered. Most of the original leading/bronzing on the reel is still present. Overall a super nice dark grey patina with only a few areas slightly lightened up by regular use. Unfortunately a previous owner decided to individualize the reel"Neanderthal-style" by scratching his initials into the back plate of the reel. Total size of the affected area is appr. of a fingernail. Apart from this the reel is in extremely nice condition. Technically it is 100% with no wobble. Play or any other imperfection. Runs as smooth and tight as it did on the day it left the Alnwick factory. I have had this reel in my personal collection for ... morea long time but never got to fish with it. Not too many steelhead or seatrout around where I live unfortunately. Hardly ever seen. This reel comes in it´s original Hardy´s carton box. And I include a fitting pokey bag with burgundy velvet lining(not a Hardy original but as close to it as they get. These reels are getting pretty scarce in today´s tight vintage market. This is a used beautiful vintage original Hardy St. Aidan fly fishing reel and 2 spools. All of these have been used and loved. So please see the photos to view the condition and amount of wear on them. The pawls and springs are in fantastic shape and only need a bit of cleaning and lube. All of the spools show residue or remnants of line sticker placement. And unfortunately the only casualty of this setup is the reel pouch which the side has slightly ripped on(but doesn't affect the zippering) As of now it is set up right hand retrieve, however it'd be quite easy to switch. Hardy St. George 3" Fly Reel - 3 screw latch
Hardy St. George- 3" 3-screw latch. Curved writing prewar reel. Stamped JS fro Jimmy Smith a well known reel smith at Hardy. This is a very tight St. George that has been used and loved for many years. There is one repaired frame crack that can be seen in the photos. I don't know the provenance of the work but it's professional cleanness leads me to believe it may be a factory repair job. There is another very fine crack that I have shown in a close-up photo. The crack seems stable and has not changed at all since I have owned the reel which includes a fair amount of fishing time. There is a tiny bit of bend in the foot but it was not noticeable when I mounted the reel. The milky agate is clear with no cracks as far as I can tell. They appear solid and I planned to fish for summer steelhead with the reel but couldn't quite fit my line on due to the large arbor. The handle appears original but the cup is missing which creates a bit of play. Strong check and very loud and resonant. Beautiful patina on this reel with a ton of fishing mojo. No telling what fishing stories this reel could tell.

Hardy Bros. 3” St. George pre-WW II fly reel. This is the blued version of the famed trout reel with the ribbed brass foot and the brass rivets and the three-screw spring-loaded latch. It is RHW. With a nickel silver line guard that will never crack or chip. It is the Mark II model with the adjustable drag and the extra spring and pawl. The initials“T.A. Tommy Armstrong) are inside denoting the maker. The foot has not been filed. And there is no spool wobble nor need for any repair on any part of the reel. Much of the original bluing is intact and the adjustable drag feature works very well. It comes in a British-made D-case that is not original to the reel. This one is ready to put on that nice bamboo rod that is begging to see time on a river.

Hardy Bros. 2 9/16” Three-screw St. George fly reel. This RHW reel is a pre-war blued“St George Junior” model with the aluminum ribbed foot and the brass rivets. It is a MK II version. With the adjustable drag and an extra spring and pawl. The reel was made by Hardy’s premier maker. Jimmy Smith, and one can see the“J.S. stamped on the inside. The crimson-tinted agate does not have a chip or crack in it. And the foot has not been shortened. Almost all of the original bluing is intact. The reel is in original. Essentially perfect, condition with a pleasing click. One could collect this reel or fish with it.

The hardy neoprene case is included but not original to the St George Jr reel) The only flaws on the reel are little marks on the reel foot from mounting it on several slide band reel seats. Otherwise it is like new. In excellent condition. The fly line is a white Royal Wulff Triangle Taper 3wt line with J3 coating that has been shortened to 60' to allow for more backing room on the little reel. The line has been used a few times on different reels but is in excellent condition. The large welded loop was recently removed and a loop was whipped on with olive silk thread and superglue. Hardy Bros. 2 9/16” St. George Jr. 3-screw in the correct box. This is a gem of a reel. It has the Mark II adjustable check. With an extra spring and pawl, and the ribbed aluminum foot. It comes with an agate line guard that has two micro-cracks. Neither of which can be felt with the finger. It is the pre-WWII blued model with the desirable three-screw latch. One can see the initials“J.S. inside that of the renowned Hardy reel maker. Jimmy Smith. The reel runs like a top. With no spool slap to be found. It comes in the correct cardboard box. With the correct label, that is in as-made, perfect condition. So. We have a great little reel, in carefully used condition with its box that is museum quality. A nice combination.

Hardy 3-3/8 inch St. George fly reel. Hardy Bros. Ltd. Alnwick, England. Earlier model in excellent condition. Three-screw latch. Slots are perfect, no evidence of tampering. Agate is perfect, no cracks or chips. Full-length ribbed brass foot. No dents. Cracks, gouges or evidence of abuse. The spool rotates smoothly and true, no rocking on the spindle, this reel has seen little use. The leaded finish is mostly intact, only a few faint scratches and a small patch of storage darkening on the back plate as shown in the pictures. The click is quiet and smooth and the adjustable drag functions as it should. The spool has an expanded arbor. Desirable for minimizing weight and keeping backing line to a reasonable length. This reel was made by Tommy Armstrong, a favored long-term Hardy builder. His initials, TA" have a"G" suffix(the ... morelast letter in his name) to differentiate his work from another"TA" initialed Hardy employee. This reel seems original throughout. Here we have up for auction is a Vintage Hardy"The St. John" 3 7/8" Salmon/Steelhead fly reel. Set for Right Hand Wind in very good condition, loaded with a Hardy Double Taper 10 Weight Floating fly line with backing, which appears to be almost new, with an ebonite crank handle, a rim tension adjustment knob, a smooth brass foot mounted on the frame(a bit short to accommodate modern reel seats) with two brass screws, engraved on the two screw spool release attachment with the engraved letters of"AA" engraved on the back plate with"AA" and the strait line maker's name, style and size of this reel. The reel has the classic perforated spool and the two screw latch hub or spool mount, a strong click drag, brass rivets on the back plate and has a clean smooth click action and presents in mechanically spot ... moreon shape or condition with no wobble of the spindle and maintains it's original gun gray metal finish, and comes with the cloth bag as seen in the photo. The reel might enjoy a bath. Cleaning, lube, grease and an oil application~~and a good home. Please look at the pictures as they form a part of the condition description. The reel being in fine honest original condition. With no damage, cracks or repairs, save a few scratches on the finish indicative of a used salmon fly reel evocative of salmon fishing adventures of times gone by, and runs free having retained much of it's original vintage patina. Hardy Bros. 3” pre-war St. George fly reel. This is a very clean, perfectly tuned reel with the adjustable drag Mark II check that carries an extra spring and pawl. It is the pre-war blued model. And almost all of the original bluing is still on the reel. This RHW reel has the ribbed brass foot. That has not been filed, and the nickel silver line guard which. Because it can never crack or break, I prefer. This little reel purrs like a kitten. And would look awfully good on the back end of a quality bamboo fly rod. It comes in a nice suede pouch with a drawstring.
