It would be great to use on a small bamboo or graphite fly rod of your choice The reel is marked made in England I am not sure of the exact manufacture date. The reel is set up for LEFT HANDED RETRIEVE but can be also set up for right handed retrieve easily. The reel remains in very very good condition. There is light paint wear around the rim but very minor. The spare spool was probably used but it sure looks any use would have been very limited. There is no fly line on the spare spool-only backing. The line and backing on the reel is in nice condition-there is a sticker on the spool thats says AIR CEL WF-5-F The Orvis padded reel case is in great shape and the Orvis cloth liner for the spare spool is in fine shape-the Orvis lettering is fading quite a bit on the cloth. You are viewing/ bidding on a very gently used Orvis CFO III Fly Reel. This reel has been in my collection for many years. And was used twice for brook trout fishing in Maine. It was paired up with a 5 wt. cane rod. During this trip, a small scratch occurred on the edge of the reel. It is shown in the photo. Other than this, the reel is in pristine condition. It has a soft leather case, and matching spare spool. This model is designed for 4-6 wt lines. It is made by Hardy Brothers of England for Orvis. I can't recall ever having used it.Mainly because I never really had a small trout rod that it paired well with. I am told these were made for Orvis by Hardy.And that wouldn't surprise me,as the quality is simllar. The reel measures 3 inches in diameter and is right hand wind.I believe it can by changed to left hand wind,but I'm not sure how you do it. It has an adjustable drag. Up for auction is a classic CFO III(3) click and pawl with a leather case with rivets. The reel is already loaded with backing and 6 wt line. This reel was made in England by Hardy. This reel has been used and still has a lot of life left in it. As you can see in the pictures some of the paint is flaking on the frame which in no way affects the function of the reel. There are also a few minor dings as shown in the pictures. The spool is not rubbing the frame and the spindle does not appear to be warped or bent. This would balance out most any 3, 4 or 5 wt fly rod setup, and would be right at home on most any trout stream, from the Battenkill in NY, to the Itchen in England, all the way out West to the Madison or Gallatin. Comes with its original leather. Canvas. This is a British-made Orvis CFO III. One of the true classic fly reels made in the past 100 years. These were and still remain the absolute favorite reels of many anglers, both for fishing and collecting. This would balance out most any 3, 4 or wt fly rod setup, and would be right at home on most any trout stream, from the Battenkill in NY, to the Itchen in England, all the way out West to the Madison or Gallatin. Whatever the quarry, this reel is up to the task. I hate to sell this thing but I am no longer able to fish and having to sell all my good gear.very sad day

This is one of the all time classic models of fly reels to come out of Orvis. This spool is lightly used(exc. cond. and comes with backing for a 5 wt. line as well as a storage bag. It is currently set up for left hand retrieve but can be switched to right. This reel was Made in England by HARDY BROS of Alnwick(although bearing the ORVIS name) Although this reel has been used. It remains in superb mechanical condition. There is some honest paint wear that is visible in the photographs to the backplate. I am supplying with the reel a spare spool and the original ORVIS suede/sheepskin reel pouch. The perforated drum helps reduce the weight of this reel considerably. So much so that(with the backing line) it weighs just 128grms! There are fly lines(with backing) supplied on both spools however I am unable to say what size. Make or condition they are. Click and pawl fly reel made for Orvis by Hardy Brothers of Alnwick, England- circa 1972. Screwback spool spindle post and three hole ported reel foot- hallmarks of the very early models made by Hardy. Reel is 3 inches in diameter by 1 1/8 inches wide(excluding handle and drag knob) and weighs 3.0 ounces. Most suitable for 3 to 5 weight lines/rods, capacity: WF4F plus 300 feet of 20lb Micron backing. Spool opening is 3/4 of an inch wide. Reel is in good used condition overall, both mechanically and cosmetically. Spool is sound and tight. Handle is straight, uncracked and turns smoothly. Spool edge and frame rim wear and fadded finish one would typically anticipate on a well used reel ... moreof this vintage. There is some surface rash on the back and rim of the frame plus around the lettering but nothing that would be considered really obnoxious. No line grooves that are fairly common in these reels. Reel can be fished with right or left hand retrieve by simply reversing the click pawls. Minimal"drag" regulation may be applied via a plastic knob on the reverse which causes tension springs to exert pressure on the click pawls. Additional drag pressure may be applied manually by palming the spool rim. Includes an inexpensive, generic(not Hardy or Orvis product) olive colored neoprene reel case. Here it is. Guys. An original, legendary, Orvis CFO III fly reel which is engraved"Made in England" which identifies this fine instrument as being made for Orvis by BFR of England. I bought this reel new at The Troufitter fly shop in Syracuse, NY after I got out of college, sometime in the early 1990's. I've caught many trout with it all around the famous upstate New York rivers(Beaverkill, Willowemoc, Battenkill, Esopus, Ausable, etc. the central Pennsylvania streams(Spruce, Pine, Penns, Little Juniata, Yello Breeches, etc. and many western streams in Colorado, Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming. Despite it's well traveled history, it remains in 98% or better condition, as seen in the photos. I've long since gone to more modern large arbor designs for my fly reels, and although it has sentimental value to me, my son does ... morenot have any interest in fly fishing, and I know that when I croak he'd sell it at a garage sale to some idiot for $5. Comes with its original leather/canvas reel case and is loaded with Cortland 444 double taper floating line, 5 weight. As you can see from the latest Orvis ad, a USA-made reproduction of this reel sells for $345. Thanks to the gentleman who advised me that my memory sucks(I knew that) and that my knowledge of CFO reel history also sucks-I had originally posted this a a"Hardy made" reel from around 1981. This version did not come around until 1992.
