I have tailored this listing for persons knowledgeable in vintage salmon reel lore. Accordingly. I will not go into a detailed history of Edward von Hofe and his associate, Otto Zwarg. Suffice it to say, the Zwarg reels were a continuation of the Vom Hofe Reel Co. line, started at the turn of the last century and ending with Otto Zwarg’s reels produced in the time period of 1946-1958. Both, high quality, reel series were works of machining art in their day. This rare. 3-0 classic, Zwarg, Model 400(Laurentian) is very similar to the Vom Hofe Tobique salmon reel. The Zwarg Laurentian is geared as a multiplier with a 2:1 retrieve ratio in order to facilitate fast line retrieval so necessary during battles waged on Atlantic salmon and steelhead rivers worldwide. This reel has the seven detent arrowhead pointer drag feature with very bright red dot indicators. Bogdan’s reels are legendary in quality and beauty and a tribute to the exquisite reels of Edward Vom Hofe with their“S” shape handles. This reel has been honestly used but not abused in any way and is still in excellent mechanical condition and with only minor scuffing to the frame and a few scratches to the sideplates. I am the second owner of this reel and purchased it in the late‘80s from a gentleman who was a regular on the Atlantic salmon rivers of Canada. Before I purchased it. The original owner sent it to Stan who cleaned and overhauled the reel. I have used in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest for salmon and steelhead where it performed flawlessly—I wouldn't hesitate to use it again. The reel is a 2:1 multiplier and the frame ... moremeasures 3-1/4 inches x 2-1/4 inches. The actual spool is 2-3/4 inches in diameter x 1-1/4 inch in width and the capacity is a WF-7 and 200 yards of 50# gelspun/braid backing.
