LL Bean GQS Disc 8/9 Spey/salt Fly Reel (Made In England By Hardy Bros, Used)
Used LL Bean GQS fly reel rated for 8 or 9 weight lines. This reel was made in England by Hardy Brothers of Alnwick and is very similar to the Marquis Disc or early model Orvis CFO Disc lines of reels. This retro style reel has a solid disc drag. Is saltwater proof and can be changed from left to right hand wind easily. It would be perfect paired with a Spey or switch rod. The reel has had some use. But is in reasonable working order. Mechanically it is good shape and the drag and clicker mechanism function well. Cosmetically it has a number of small dings and blemishes. This particular model was supplied with a black stealth paint finish, rather than anodization. The paintwork on this was was in bad shape, so it has been re-sprayed. The current paintwork is ok, but not perfect- see pictures. This is a good functioning reel to use, not one ... morefor a collector. Spool diameter is approximately 3.75 inches. Width approximately 0.875 inches. Should take an 8, 9 or even 10 weight single handed line with ample backing. With a Spey or switch rod, it would suit a 6, 7 or 8 weight line. But in solid condition. could use a cleaning. But should clean up just fine. Has one small scratch on the side with the handle. most other marks appear to be cleanable. i didn't clean. The history behind this particular item is very interesting. It was purchased by a gentleman in Connecticut in the 1940's. This reel has been in that family ever since. Given this reels age. I would say it is in excellent condition. There are dings and the reel has a beautiful patina, but this is all from loving use over the past 70+ years. The vintage L.R.H. Lightweight Fly Reel& ... moretwo Spare Spools being auctioned have been exceptionally well maintained by their previous owner, and are in superb condition given their age. Still structurally and mechanically sound throughout. There are indeed some minor surface scratches, light scrapes, and polished rubs present about reel and spools' rimmed edges and face to note, but overall, the original finish appears to have held up exceptionally well. A quick testing of the reel's traditional dual-spring and dual-check drag confirms modest increasing tension throughout its adjustable range. With no stutter, stick, or hesitation noted, and a thorough inspection of the reel's interior confirms all internal parts still perfectly intact and fully functional, with no excessive residue build up, tarnishing, or oxidization of component pieces found. The line guard and reel foot both still appear straight and tight with no signs of warp or excessive wear either. And the handles and spool-release mechanisms were confirmed still functioning perfectly without issue across the entire set as well. Fresh attic find! What you see is what you get. This Hardy Bros Featherweight reel is in used condition.It has no model or serial numbers. Everything works as it should.Comes spooled with 5wt line and carrying case.Only problem with reel is a some rock rash on the reel frame(pictured) I believe it is a 1960's early 70's reel as most of the stuff found in attic was from this era. I am also not 100% sure the case is original as I do not know much about fly reels. I will do my best to answer any questions about this reel. What you see is what you get. The reel is 88m in diameter. it is 26 mm wide and the spool has an internal width of 18 mm. It comes with a Hardy 6 weight sink tip Double Taper fly line on one spool it is the green one in the photo's. You are viewing my super 3"dia ORVIS CFO III Fly Reel that is suited for lines#4 to#6. This reel was Made in England by HARDY BROS of Alnwick(although bearing the ORVIS name) Although this reel has been used. It remains in superb mechanical condition. There is some honest paint wear that is visible in the photographs to the backplate. I am supplying with the reel a spare spool and the original ORVIS suede/sheepskin reel pouch. The perforated drum helps reduce the weight of this reel considerably. So much so that(with the backing line) it weighs just 128grms! There are fly lines(with backing) supplied on both spools however I am unable to say what size. Make or condition they are. Hardy Bros Ltd. Marquis Salmon No. 1 Saltwater Fly - Vintage - Made in England
Vintage fly reel made by Hardy. Written on the back of the reel is"Marquis Salmon No.1" Saltwater" and"Made by Hardy Bros Ltd. England" This reel does show signs of use. But is in good usable condition overall. Specifically the rod mount and the outer rim of the spool show signs of corrosion. There is some scratches along the edge of the back of the reel. The word"Made" also has a couple marks/nicks on the M and the A, but otherwise the writing is clear. On the inside, there is some more light corrosion(on the mechansim that tensions the clicker springs) and some grease marks on the inside of the spool. There is also some scratches on the bars that span over the line. None of these issues affect the function of the reel. The clicker is strong and the mechanism that moves it works well.
