Vintage PFLUEGER Nickel Plated Fly Reel w/ 2:1 Multiplier- 80 yards
Up for bid is one vintage PFLUEGER Nickel Plated Trout/Fly Reel with Clicker. Drag and 2:1 Geared Multiplier, and 80 yard line capacity. The reel has nickel plating over brass. The plating is in fair condition. There is a clicker controlled by a slide button on the back plate. And a second slide button controls drag. It is in good working condition. The handle appears to have a hard rubber knob. It is not marked to as to manufacturer. But the foot design is that used by PFLUEGER. It measures 2-3/16" diameter, 2-11/16" deep including the handle, and has a foot measuring 2-9/16" long by 9/16" wide. On the bottom of the foot the number"80" is inscribed. It weighs 5.6 ounces. There seem to be a couple of minor, hard for me to see scratches on the reel and it seems function perfectly. It is a heavy duty reel that only weighs 5 ozs. I have lubed it and comes with a full reel of backing,fly line and tippet. We have a smoke-free home. It has no case, but does have the original box and instructions. Martin 68 Multiplier Made-in-America Fly Reel Good-looking. Fast, stout Martin 68 Multiplier—maybe one of the Sherman tanks of fly reels. This is the good-ol'days American version, and this one is clean and well maintained. Retrieve ratio is a quick 3:1. Capacity is rated for a WF9F with 150 of 18 lb. backing. I have 30 lb. Dacron on there(enough to accommodate a WF9I) and will leave or remove according to buyer's preference. Reel weighs about seven ounces. Didn't come with box or papers. So those can't be provided. My application was for this reel was on a nine-foot Fenwick FF909 that weighs about five ounces. Big cane or'glass rods can be a good pairing with the Martin 68.

I have tailored this listing for persons knowledgeable in vintage salmon reel lore. Accordingly. I will not go into a detailed history of Edward von Hofe and his associate, Otto Zwarg. Suffice it to say, the Zwarg reels were a continuation of the Vom Hofe Reel Co. line, started at the turn of the last century and ending with Otto Zwarg’s reels produced in the time period of 1946-1958. Both, high quality, reel series were works of machining art in their day. This rare. 3-0 classic, Zwarg, Model 400(Laurentian) is very similar to the Vom Hofe Tobique salmon reel. The Zwarg Laurentian is geared as a multiplier with a 2:1 retrieve ratio in order to facilitate fast line retrieval so necessary during battles waged on Atlantic salmon and steelhead rivers worldwide. The reel has hard rubber side plates and German silver(nickel silver) rims, S shaped ... morecounterbalanced handle and internal bronze bearings. Although the reel components were machine made- the countersunk plate screws were hand cut- the reel was hand assembled. The 3-0(3 5/8” Dia. size is more rare and an ideal compromise for someone wishing to use it with either a single hand or spey fishing rod. This reel is in excellent condition overall and was professionally checked and serviced several years ago. It has not been fished since. As you can see. The hard rubber side plates are in superb condition; no dents, cracks, gouges or engravings. It will hold a 9wt. line with adequate backing and line tension is controlled by the teardrop knob on the backplate. The reel is a multiplier. Great if you need to retrieve line quickly. Vintage Cortland 444 Multiplier Fly Reel
Another vintage spring-and-pawl"Multiplier" fly reel in very good condition. This time from Cortland, a popular maker in England. Spool size is 3.25" x 7/8" with a 1/2 retrieve ratio. With original case and spare spool and crank. Feel free to google"English multiplier fly reels" for background on these reel types. I first came across them in England in the 80's and fell in love with them. The simple reason is that these reels have the ability to haul in copious yards of line in a very short time and with very little effort. If you've ever had a decent sized trout or bass on the line and it began to swim toward you, then you know how important it is to get that line in fast. I had a trout reverse and swim between my legs once on the Little Gunpowder and it took my slack line about 70 yards in the other ... moredirection before I could turn around and tighten up again! NO More! I've collected these reels for a number of years and am selling most of them, all English-made and in great shape, in other auctions. The larger multipliers, like this J.W. Young, are great for Steelhead and Salmon, as well, because of their size, width, and abilities to take line weights from 5 up to 9 or 10. I use a narrow Gladding Intrepid GearFly for 5/6 weights on the Upper Delaware very happily on Orvis"Trout, Henry's Fork, and Limestone Special" rods. They'll work nicely on any rod up to a 10 weight. Good luck and happy fishing. It's almost Spring.
