It is equipped with a clicker controlled by a slide button on the rear plate, and 4:1 geared multiplier all in good working condition. It is equipped with jeweled bearing caps in good condition. The spool has 100 yards of line capacity. The metal is nickel plated brass as there are small areas of brass showing at the top and bottom of the front and rear plates from wear, the bottom of the foot, and the rim of the front cover and rear plate. The plating is in fair condition otherwise. On the front plate it is inscribed with"CRITERION, LEVEL WINDING, NO. 1960" And still on the front plate inside an oval is"MADE IN KALAMAZOO. U.S.A. Vintage Casting Reel "Shakespeare Direct Drive" No. 1960 - Nice !
This reel is very old. It is a Shakespeare Direct Drive Model 1960. It is a little sticky and needs some oil. I will let that up to you. Another little issue is that one of the finger handles sticks. Seller will let you either leave it that way or figure a way to loosen it. Seller was afraid he might harm it by force. But the reel works fine. The line guide is working and it all seems fine. All the parts are there. Even some old braided line. No Reserve. It has to be a rather rare reel.

Up for auction is a recent estate find. This is a vintage Shakespeare 1960 Criterion Model GE. Made in the USA, casting reel that has been used( it's 50 years old) but is in excellent condition. There are a couple of scuffs and a scratch or two from use but other than that it is as pictured.The reel functions properly and is a nice clean reel to collect or use. All I did was clean the outside a bit for pictures( you can still see some of the grease on the outside of the reel) but it could use a thorough cleaning and lubrication. Shakespeare Criterion 1960 Model GE with Box ETC. Vintage Casting Reel Fishing
This reel appears to be in good shape with some wear. All functions seem to work also, all the knobs turn easily. It's been oiled and runs really smooth. The box has some wear, one of the sides is worn through on the box top, it still is fairly sturdy though. This also comes with the manual and wrench/tool. Pitting and some scratches( see pics) Made in the USA by Shakespeare Reel Company. Criterion 1960 Model GJ casting reel is a well made quality piece. Good reel with Chrome side plates. Level winder, drag adjust, and On/ Off clicker It needs some TLC and a good oiling because it is stiff to turn. I'm going to say it is for parts or repair. It may work fine. But I can only say it seems to work well. Measures about 2 1/8" diameter X 2 1/4" wide( 3 3.3+/4" wide with Handle) Thank you for looking. Please ask all questions before bidding. Vintage Shakespeare Criterion 1960 Jeweled Casting Reel Mod. NJ, Sock, 1980's ?
You are bidding on a v intage Shakespeare Criterion 1960 jeweled casting reel. Model NJ, with original flannel sock, possibly dates to the early 1980's. Found a dating code chart that shows model NJ was made in 1982. But another source said that dating system was abandoned in 1977 when the company was sold. This reel came from the estate of a family friend and based on knowledge of the owner. Early 1980's sounds about right. Please Note: Photos are an integral part of item description.
