The reel has an aluminum spool with a balsa wood arbor. The reel has adjustable spool pivots and external oiling hole. This is a scarce version of the Julius vom Hofe salt water style reels. Vintage Rare Julius Vom Hofe Brass Casting Reel w/Ball Handle, 2:1 Multiplier
Up for bid is one Vintage Brass Multiplier Casting Reel with Ball Handle. Threaded Bearing Cap, and 2:1 geared multiplier. I'm not sure how to classify this reel, based on the size of the foot I would guess it would have been used for salt water fishing or perhaps large fresh water species. There is no Clicker. There is a drag control pullout lever(lever appears not to be original, but works) The front cover is marked"JULIUS VOM HOFE, N(with cloverleaf) Y, TRADE MARK" This reel is constructed of brass. It is in good working condition, has a slight drag in one spot when rotated. The ball handle has a hard rubber knob. The foot appears to be machined from one piece of brass. This is a nice looking reel other than the drag lever. It appears free of scratches. The bearing cap is threaded and in good condition. The foot does have ... moresome marks at one end where some straightening took place. From what I've been able to find on the internet, Julius Vom Hofe began making reels under his own name in 1882, and used the cloverleaf logo between 1882 to 1885, thus this reel would have been made within that time span. It measures 3" diameter. 4-3/4" deep including the handle, pillars are about 2-1/8" long, and has a foot measuring 3-5/16" long by 3/4" wide. The foot is marked on the bottom with"1/0" see photo) It weighs 1 pound 4.1 ounces, with packaging it will ship below 2 pounds. Marked on left side plate JULIUS VOM HOFF OCT 8/ 89. Diameter on side plates 3 1/2" Measures 3 1/2" from left to right side plates. Has original leather brake. Right side plate is hard rubber. Loud clicker. Spool is loaded with early braided line. As found and has not been cleaned. Brass plating is tarnished. A nice collectible reel when cleaned up.

Hello Folks. This item is fresh from an estate for the buyer. I was told this is a good old antique fly casting reel by an old time maker of good reels. On 1 side of reel its marked faintly Julius Vom Hofe and on foot base its marked 3. the size is about 2 1/2 ins. diameter. I guess you would call this reel a small size. The family I purchased it from said there grand father used it as a fly fishing reel. Please look at photos the material on sides has cracks near screws. Reel is NOT falling apart and it works. VINTAGE JULIUS VOM HOFE CASTING REEL OCT 8, 1889 5/0
Offered here is a Julius Vom Hofe 5/0 fishing reel. Nice early example. It is in need of the cleaning a true collector can provide. Measuring about 4& 1/2 inches in diameter. It is possible this was a custom made device. My research kind of lead me to that but I'm sure you know more than I. Rubber on the bottom is cracked as you can see from the picture on outside panel and top of inside the same panel. I've included a little history-probably just stuff you already know. Hope it fills a need in your collection. Julius vom Hofe Company was established in 1857. He received several patents and became one of the most prolific reel makers. This patent is for the reel end plates being made of hard rubber with metal protective bands. This patent was granted on November 17. 1885. The other common patent date seen on this reel is October ... more8, 1889. This was for a rear spool bearing steel pivot and washer. Julius was one of the most prolific reel designers with 9 patents granted to him. His models range from the highest quality solid nickel silver(German silver) reels to less expensive nickel plated brass and hard rubber reels. All of his reels are sought by collectors. His earliest pre-patent date reels were the ball handle style and had a distinctive clover leaf logo stamped in the reel's head plate. Julius vom Hofe made reels for a number of Sporting Goods dealers and marked them with his name and that of the company. This included companies like Thos. J. Conroy in NY. Abbey& Imbrie in NY and von Lengerke& Detmold in NY. All of the reels pictured below are nickel silver or nickel silver and hard rubber.

Awesome Julius vom Hofe patented"Cross" Reel. Hard rubber and nickel plated brass. Spins great. Strong click. Hard rubber knob spins freely. I'm gonna put the plating at 99% intact. Gives me a 1% cushion! No cracks in the hard rubber. The rubber appears darker in person away from the bright lights needed to take photos. Measures 1 3/4 inches across. 4" stamped on foot. The stamping on head cap is very faint so I took extra photos for you to zoom in on. You can barely see it with naked eye. Also took a photo with cap removed so you could see why it is called the"cross" reel. Notice the"46" stamped between foot pillar screws and"46" inscribed in the rubber inside head cap. I'm assuming this was a"station" number. Hats off to#46 for making a great little reel that has(so far) stood ... morethe test of time! This auction is for a lot of 2 small vintage Julius Vom Hofe fishing reels. The one with the silver faceplate(left one in first photo) is marked Julius Vom Hofe Pat Nov 17 85. Oct 8, 1889. It also has a"3" marked on the bottom of the rod holder. It is about 2 1/2" in diameter and in very good condition. The second reel is unmarked as best I can tell except for a"2" on the bottom. It is about 2 1/4" in diameter and is missing the counterweight on the crank and looks to have been solder repaired where the rod holder attaches(see last photo) other than that it is in fair condition. I think it is also an Julius Vom Hofe based on a photo in a reel book I have so I am including it with the other. And is patented Nov.17, 1885 and Oct. 8, 1889. It's foot is strongly marked"3"The condition of this 100 plus year old fishing artifact is with moderate in use wear. Vintage JULIUS VOM HOFE No. 33 Raised Pillar 2/00 Reel - Hard Rubber / Brass
Julius Vom Hofe raised pillar reel. Featuring hard rubber and brass construction, counter balanced handle, and rear plate mounted clicker. Reel is marked on the back plate Julius Vom Hofe- Pat. Oct. 8'89, and also marked with the number 33 on the bottom of the face plate frame, and the number 2/00 on the bottom of the foot. I have not cleaned the reel at all. It is in used condition and the foot has been trimmed as seen in the pics, but there are no chips or cracks in the hard rubber and it should clean nicely. Mechanically everything works, and the clicker is strong. The reel diameter measures about 2 7/8 inches, and the spool width is about 1 5/8 inches. It has a# 4 on bottom(see last pic) It has broken out piece(3rd pic) and a cracked piece ready to fall off(4th& 5th pic) From outside endplate to outside endplate, it measures approx. 1-9/16" across. This piece is used and may need a clean-up if desired.
