The reel has been lightly cleaned but still needs a little more to look perfect. The reel is in excellent overall condition considering its age. The bait alarm mode and drag seems to works fine. The mechanical thumber(guess what I would call the brake) seems fine but I have not cast it. Not 100% sure on the brake since I have not cast it. Would be tricky since the handles would spin when it is cast because it doesn't have button the enter free spool like a modern reel. Don't see any evidence it has any functioning anti-reverse. Most of this is probably a moot point since this fantastic looking retro reel would best serve to be a conversation piece. Not sure on the year of manufacture but the model number 1953 seems to fit. Looks to be all metal construction except for the handles which has the look and feel of Bakelite but I can't be sure. Like I said I can't guarantee it is 100% on functionality but it is in surprisingly great condition physically. Would make a first class fisherman's decor item. This is a vintage Pflueger No. 1953 Skilkast level-wind. Bait casting reel in the original box. The reel is in excellent condition with nice engraving on one side plate. The handle and level-wind move smoothly and the clicker is strong. The side plates are 2" in diameter. The box is solid with very little wear. Vintage Pflueger Skilkast 1953 USA Bait Casting Reel Metal Old Retro Decor
Vintage Pflueger Bait Casting Reel Skilkast Model: 1953 Fresh Water Model Dimensions: 4 1/4" W X 2 1/8" H X 2 7/8" D A vintage metal reel with great looking decorative pattern on each end. The reel has been lightly cleaned but still needs a little more to look perfect. The reel is in excellent overall condition considering its age. The bait alarm mode and drag seems to works fine. The mechanical thumber(guess what I would call the brake) seems fine but I have not cast it. Not 100% sure on the brake since I have not cast it. Would be tricky since the handles would spin when it is cast because it doesn't have button the enter free spool like a modern reel. Don't see any evidence it has any functioning anti-reverse. Most of this is probably a moot point since this fantastic looking retro reel would best serve to be a conversation ... morepiece. Not sure on the year of manufacture but the model number 1953 seems to fit. Looks to be all metal construction except for the handles which has the look and feel of Bakelite but I can't be sure. Like I said I can't guarantee it is 100% on functionality but it is in surprisingly great condition physically. Would make a first class fisherman's decor item. Up for sale is a vintage Pflueger Skilkast Number 1953 Fishing Reel. I purchased a large lot of vintage and antique fishing lures and reels from an estate sale. The reels are all in fair to good working condition. They all could use a cleaning and oiling. And some have minor wear and tear and slight corrosion or rust. Due to the fact that these are not my personal collection of reels, I will say that some of the reels may potentially have been repaired in the past or have some not original parts. Up for auction is a recent estate find. This is a vintage Pflueger Skilkast No. 1953 made in the USA casting reel that has been used( it's 60 years old) but is in excellent condition. There are a couple of scuffs and a little bit of rim rash from use but other than that it is as pictured.The reel functions properly and is a nice clean reel to collect or use. All I did was clean the outside a bit for pictures( you can still see some of the grease on the outside of the reel) but it could use a thorough cleaning and lubrication. This nice reel style retains the cork spacer over the metal spool. There is a"B" stamped on the bottom of the reels foot and the side plate says"Patented, Pat's Pend" Good luck bidding on this nice collectible little casting reel. Vintage Pflueger Casting Reel- Skilkast Trademark No 1953 This is a good working used fishing reel by Pflueger. It's a nice light duty reel with the about 97% of it's polished finish intact. It has handles that are an interesting plastic brown with a darker swirl in each(marbled) The reel is in working condition with a good strong clicker. It is also marked"PATENTED PAT'S PEND" on one side. And"PFLUEGER SKILKAST TRADE MARK NO. 1953 MADE IN U.S.A. A very nicely made reel. And in very nice shape! Ernest F. Pflueger was one of the first inventors of fishing tackle. He was born in Germany and spent numerous years working as a molder. In 1868. He built a home in Akron, Ohio, and began working for the Erie Stove Company. Later, he found employment in the grocery industry. Pflueger never lost his childhood inventiveness ... moreand by 1880. He was responsible for requesting more than 50 different patents. He began his fishing tackle business during the 1860s and sold fish hooks. Pflueger expanded into bait and the company grew. His son Ernest A. Pflueger was born in Akron and by the time he was 15, the younger Pflueger was working for his father. thanks for looking Ernest Sr. died in 1890 and his son took over the managerial responsibilities of the tackle business.
