For sale is Edward Vom Hofe model 501 bait casting reel in the 3/0 size! This reel will clean to EX condition and includes a click lever. Free spool lever, and star drag all of which work fine. Reel dimensions are 3-5/8" diameter end plates X 1-7/8" wide spool. There are no chips or cracks in the hard rubber and the full length foot reads"501" 3/0 and E173. The sliding oil caps have both the 1896 and the 1902 patent dates. The hard leather case is marked EK TRYON CO- PHILA- HANDMADE and is in fair condition. Thanks for looking!

Julius Vom Hofe Raised Pillar Casting Reel Here is a JVH raised pillar non level wind casting reel. The plates measure 1 3/4" in diameter. The reel is about 2 1/8" to the end of the pillars. And the pillars are 1 5/16" wide. The only marking is the number 206 with an underlined 0 on the bottom of the foot(probably a catalog number) but the reel has the characteristic small hole in the middle of the foot and the JVH drag washer on the tail plate. Reel is quite worn with brassing and a couple of chips to the hard rubber plates but it does appear to be complete with original parts. Please enlarge the photos. Cranks smoothly. The click is weak. For sale is a Julius Vom Hofe reel. It is stamped Pat. Nov 17 1985. Oct 8 1889. I tested the reel. The drag, free spool and the clicker all work well. All parts are original. The only problems are the cranking handle is loose(maybe the bearing needs repair, see photo#6) and there is a small crack on the top of the inside of the reel just above the spool(see photo#7} The reel is 3 1/2 inches in diameter.

Vintage Rare Frederick Vom Hofe Brass Casting Reel w/Ball Handle, 2:1 Multiplier
Up for bid is one Vintage Brass Multiplier Casting Reel with Ball Handle. Threaded Bearing Cap, and 2:1 geared multiplier. I'm not sure how to classify this reel, based on the size of the foot I would guess it would have been used for salt water fishing or perhaps large fresh water species. There is no Clicker or Drag. The front cover is marked"F. V. HOFE, MAKER" This reel is constructed of brass. It is in good working condition. The handle is missing the wood knob, there is a plastic knob that is not original. The foot appears to be machined from one piece of brass and has signs of having been filed at both ends. On the bottom of the foot it is engraved with"150" This is a nice looking and nice working reel with exception of the missing knob. It has minimal scratches from use. The bearing cap is threaded. The bottom ... moreof the cover has a slash mark that extends onto the adjoining front plate which is a feature that is used to identify F. Vom Hofe reels as well. From what I've been able to find on the internet. Frederick Vom Hofe began making reels in 1857, and reels were marked F. VOM HOFE. He became partners with his son Julius in 1860 and began marking reels F. VOM HOFE& SON. He remained making reels until 1882 when he retired, thus this reel would have been made within that time span of 1857 to 1860 before his partnership with Julius. Antique Julius vom Hofe Casting Reel Circa 1890
This fine example of 19th century American craftsmanship clearly shows that it was produced by the Julius vom Hofe Company(established 1857) for the famous Von Lengerke& Detmold sporting goods company in Brooklyn. NY just before the turn of the 20th century. Von Lengerke and Detmold was later acquired by the original Abercrombie& Fitch sporting goods company of Manhattan, NY in 1929, just before the start of the Great Depression. Julius vom Hofe was granted a total of nine patents for his fishing reel innovations. His brother. Edward vom Hofe, is also a reel maker of some notoriety, with many patents to his name. This size three reel. Made of German nickel-plated brass with hard rubber end plates, is in excellent working and physical condition with few indications of use or wear. Patent dates. On 1 side of reel its marked faintly Julius Vom Hofe and on foot base its marked 3. the size is about 2 1/2 ins. diameter. I guess you would call this reel a small size. Antique Julius Vom Hofe casting reel. Stamped on side of reel is JULIUS VOM HOFE PAT.NOV.17. 85 OCT. 8, 1889 BROOKLY, N.Y. Stamped on side of handle is SOLD BY VOM HOFE CO. N.Y. Weight of reel is 1 lb. 2 oz. Metal that reel is made of is non magnetic. I think it may be nickel. Also, material that is not metal may be bakelite. It is a hardened material. Knob on handle is either wood or bakelite. Diameter of reel side is 3 1/2" Reel seems to function as it should. As you can see in photos it does need a good cleaning. I have left it in the condition that I found it. I have been told by a person that knows a little about these reels that this one is unusual in that it has a line guard. Offered here is a Julius Vom Hofe 5/0 fishing reel. Nice early example. It is in need of the cleaning a true collector can provide. Measuring about 4& 1/2 inches in diameter. It is possible this was a custom made device. My research kind of lead me to that but I'm sure you know more than I. Rubber on the bottom is cracked as you can see from the picture on outside panel and top of inside the same panel. I've included a little history-probably just stuff you already know. Hope it fills a need in your collection. Julius vom Hofe Company was established in 1857. He received several patents and became one of the most prolific reel makers. This patent is for the reel end plates being made of hard rubber with metal protective bands. This patent was granted on November 17. 1885. The other common patent date seen on this reel is October ... more8, 1889. This was for a rear spool bearing steel pivot and washer. Julius was one of the most prolific reel designers with 9 patents granted to him. His models range from the highest quality solid nickel silver(German silver) reels to less expensive nickel plated brass and hard rubber reels. All of his reels are sought by collectors. His earliest pre-patent date reels were the ball handle style and had a distinctive clover leaf logo stamped in the reel's head plate. Julius vom Hofe made reels for a number of Sporting Goods dealers and marked them with his name and that of the company. This included companies like Thos. J. Conroy in NY. Abbey& Imbrie in NY and von Lengerke& Detmold in NY. All of the reels pictured below are nickel silver or nickel silver and hard rubber.

This auction is for a Julius Vom Hofe bait casting or fly reel. This antique reel features a smooth movement. Working click, and a sliding adjustable spool drag. This old reel has a couple of features I haven't seen before, first, the large screw on the handle side, slides up and down to apply spool brake(and adjusts tension by rotating the screw) Second, the reel clicks on retrieve but not on payout. As in the photos this raised pillar model has some plating loss, but on a reel dating from the 1800's, this is expected. Vintage "RARE" Edward Vom Hofe German Silver 200 Yard Casting Reel!"New York USA
Up for auction is a" Vintage"EARLY and RARE" Edward Vom Hofe 200 Yard Surf Casting Reel. Reel has a great patina and is in Excellent Condition. Black rubber side plates have no chips or cracks. Reel functions perfect and turns smooth with a strong on and off click operated by the sliding button located on the back, see picture# 3. Makers mark is on the handle which reads, Sold By E.Vom Hofe and Co. N.Y. see picture# 2. Foot is unaltered and marked with the number,200, see picture# 12. Reel weight is 13.5 ounces, the reel diameter is 3 inches and the width is 2 3/8 inches. Single black wooden handle has no chips or cracks. I will ship the next day after recieving payment. It has a# 4 on bottom(see last pic) It has broken out piece(3rd pic) and a cracked piece ready to fall off(4th& 5th pic) From outside endplate to outside endplate, it measures approx. 1-9/16" across. This piece is used and may need a clean-up if desired.
