Shows some signs of rust on bar that holds worm gear. Worm gear is in great condition. This reel has not been cleaned up and is in the same condition that is was found in. Free of rust, dents, scratches, and oxidation, this No. 2550 reel could almost pass for new, had some fool not lost the box. Also, we know that Bronson began manufacturing this little standards of fishermen everywhere around 1940-41. The age is evident only in the fine craftsmanship and high-quality materials, both of which are sadly lacking in many of the reels manufactured in this degenerate and sorry age. As always. Reel has been cleaned, lubed and adjusted, and the only issue is that the chrome plating is flaking off the level wind worm gear shroud. Reel still looks good and performs like a new one. I picked these up at a yard sale and do not know anything about reels so please ask any questions if I do not describe something correctly. I am estimating the date. The manual has no zipcode so should at least be early 1960s. This reel and box are from two different companies. The reel is a BRONSON MERCURY NO. 2550 and the box and manual are for a SOUTH BEND ORIGINATORS OF THE ANTI-BACK-LASH REEL. The reel has an etched scene on both sides of two guys fishing in a boat with the lake and shore in the background. It also says pat. app. for made in usa on it. It is used. It works(or at least it turns easily and the piece in the middle moves back and forth as it appears it is supposed to do) The box shows a fair amount of wear and the top of one side shows the paper peeled back some. The structure is all good though with no rips. Tears, bends, ... moreetc. The manual booklet also shows wear. I think I show the condition pretty well in all of the pics. Here is an AMAZING Bronson Mercury no. 2550 fishing reel with the box for sale! This is the much harder to find version of the Mercury and in my opinion the better looking version as well! This reel appears to be as new as the day it was made. Hard to see any reel signs of use on this one! Certainly going to be hard to find a better example. It comes with the original box and papers which appear to be in good condition. The reel works beautifully. Cranks easily, has a good strong click, and really shines. It displays very nicely with the Art-Deco geometric design and red-jeweled end-caps. Certainly a great reel for the Bronson collector.
