Vintage Antique Leather Split Woven Willow Wicker Fly Fishing Creel Basket VGC
Up for auction is a very nice split willow and leather fishing creel from early 1900's. The only real issue I see with this piece is the leather closure strap is broke. Although it is present and will be included for possible repair. Otherwise the basket is tight with little to no damage. The leather on the rest of the creel looks to be in very good condition as well. Slight discoloration inside on the bottom which just gives it credibility. Good luck.

Antique Split Willow Fishing Bait Creel - Northern Michigan Cabin Estate
Estate Fresh from a Northern Michigan estate. This auction is for a vintage split willow fishing creel. It appears to be tightly woven willow and is tan in color with minimal fading. Dating to the 1920's-1930's time period. There was no strap found with this older fishing creel. But that is easily replaced, if so desired. The overall size is approximately 9 inches high at back x 7 inches in front and the basket width is approximately 14 inches. The creel basket is in very nice condition with minimal wear or defects to the willow. The original bamboo latch is still intact and it works perfectly fine. Buyer to pay shipping costs. Antique Split Willow Fishing Creel Basket Leather Hinges
This antiques fishing creel has a dark patina that has come from years of use. It is a fine tightly-weaved split-willow basket fastened to an interestingly shaped bottom. The back side of the bottom has a nice curve to it. It measures 11" wide x 7.5" deep x 9" high.The hinges and the closure are both leather. The closure works like this: the leather strap goes over a wire loop and then the clip fastens through the loop. This is a primitive arrangement but I cannot see that there ever was any other closure. It has one break in one piece of the willow on the top edge of one side as shown in the pictures. It in no way diminishes the looks of this creel. This would make a wonderful decorating piece filled with flowers. Dishtowels, wash cloths, etc or used to store items anywhere in your home. It's in great pristine condition with just enough wear to give it wonderful character. These split willow creels were made in Japan for the American Tackle Shops from 1900 thru 1950's as were the creel baskets imported by the famous Oregon Creel makers to leather. This creel would display beautifully in the man cave. Home, cabin or lodge. I inspected the creel basket and could not find any broken willow nor broken or missing thread stitching. Look close at the shine of the basket in the photos. The lid hinge is intact. No breaks in the leather. There is patina and dust on/in the basket and shoulder strap. Vintage wicker fishing creel with leather straps. Binding and buckle. There is a hole in the top to slide the fish in or to grab bait or fishing tackle. The wicker is I believe split willow and in the French weave from the 1920's it is in nice shape as is the strapping and the bindings. It is approximately 12 inches wide at the base. 9 inches wide at the top, 5 inches deep and 7 inches high at the back. This creel was most likely sized for a woman/child. There is wonderful provenance in the hand written note found in the creel. Which states that the creel was used by Tom Moore of Saco Maine while fishing with his Grandfather in the 1930s. This note. This is a Great Vintage looking split willow also called French weave fly fishing creel from the 1940's era. It has leather trim and a leather pouch with two snaps and readable 9" ruler. It has developed a nice patina over the years. The leather straps and harness are still intact and are in a good vintage condition. Great decorator piece to show with your fishing collectibles. Picture#9 shows the right snap is off of the inside leather pouch but is connected to outside flap and shows well. This is a nice old willow woven creel for it's age. Made in England with a brass decoration on lid& leather string closure with tongue part of latch strap is missing. Hinge is held on by shoe strings and some willow wrapping. Back bone of hinge is broken and piece is included, see photos. There is a dent on the front where willow is damaged and one bone is snapped yet there. The rest of the basket is in good condition and can be rebuilt. Fly fishing Creel is 11.5" long 4.25" wide 7" deep at back and 5" deep in front. Lid is 5.5" wide and 10" long. ANTIQUE FISHING CREEL-LATE 1800s'-FINE SPLIT WILLOW-FOR BROOK TROUT!
In 1981. This creel was given to me by an 86 year old RI gent, who remembers, as a small child, seeing his father coming home with a basket full of brook trout. The legal limit during this era was 40 per day! and shortly later, reduced to 20! In fact this little creel was called a 12 pounder, because that's about how much it weighed, filled with about 40 native brookies. The brook trout were even then only 6" to 10" with a whopper being 10" to 16" This small. fine, split willow creel, 11" W x 61/2" H in back, 5" H in front and 41/2" D) was used probably from 1880s' through 1890s' Creels tend to look old fashioned anyway. But not all of them are really antique. Whether surfing online or looking in an antique shop, some of the features to look for are the very narrow split willow for the body ... moreand the size of the square opening on the lid. This opening is important because in this case, it shows the creel to be made to accommodate small native brook trout. The opening here is 1& 5/8" x 1& 3/16" Stocked trout were gradually being introduced. Rainbow trout from the Western states, Brown trout from Germany. President Grant had appointed a U. S. Fisheries Dept. in 1874 to begin this practice. One story had an old Yankee farmer tossing the Browns onto the ground for interfering with his beloved brookies. The Kaiser in Germany at the time was Von Bronn. As the farmer would heave the fish over his shoulder, he would angrily exclaim, THOSE VON BRONN BROWNS! I've just moved from a 4 bedroom house of 38 years to a two bedroom apartment and have had to reduce a lot of belongings. But I would be happy to know this would go into the hands of someone who will appreciate it. If I were looking to buy it, I would put a saved search in for the old leather straps which would fit this sized creel. Sometimes miscellaneous things like that come along.
