These were made primarily in the 1940's ... moreand 1950's. I just aquired them 3 days ago. The baskets appear all original. The exception is the shoulder strap on the basket on the left. It may not be original but its very old too. These belonged to an avid fisherman. See my other auctions for some of his bait cans and lures. Etc. The basket on the left is trimmed in reddish colored leather and has been subject to some sort of splashing. To me. It gives it more appeal. The strap used to buckle the top down is missing. I have the strap and will ship it along with the creel should the winning bidder wish to try and mend it somehow. The creel measures approx. 14 inches across by 9 inches high. The basket on the right is trimmed in brown leather and is in incredible shape. Zoom in. As I believe the baskets true condition is represented well in the photos. It is missing the buckle and some of the other leather parts are rough but it is a very sturdy basket overall and has no holes other than the one it is made to have on the top. This basket measures approx 16 inches across and 8 inches high. Both baskets have flaws but the wicker itself is in incredible shape. It has no holes or cruched corners. They both sit flat and have virtually no damage to their bottoms other than scuffs. The seller was a heavy smoker and within a few feet I can smell the smoke eminating. Because they were only in his house a few days. I suspect the smell will be temporary, but i wanted to make sure and disclose this. The basket ... moreis primarily wicker with leather trim and a canvas shoulder strap. The shoulder strap does not connect to one side, bit is present. The leather does have some dark marks and is cracked in several places. Please check out the photos. The buckle over the top will not hold since leather can been cut short. The top wants to stay open but I think can be trained to stay closed again. The handle has significant wear and the leather has worn off in spots. EXCELLENT EARLY MARSHALL WELLS LEATHERED SPLIT WILLOW BASKET CREEL
Here's an excellent early Marshall Wells leathered split willow basket creel. I've enclosed a pic of the listing from the 1924 Marshall Wells catalog showing these creels. This one has half the top covered with leather and has a brown stained basket. The leather is super clean with no chipping or cracking and is nice and flexible. It's leathered with cow hide leather. It includes a complete Marshall Wells marked cow hide leather shoulder strap. This is about 14 inches wide and has a flat back as did most all of the baskets used on Marshall Wells creels. There has been some question about weather Marshall Wells actually leathered their own creels or just sold creels made elsewhere. Their 1927 catalog mentions the creels were built in their own factory and that was about the time they bought out John Clark Saddlery. I'm sure ... morethey then built their own creels but before that we don't know for sure. Very nice example of a tough creel to find. Would make a fine display item or could still be used. I've been collecting creels for years and just recently realized I'm totally out of space to display them. I counted them a couple of weeks ago and find that I have over 400 of them. I guess I've got to move a few of them on down the road so my wife and I will have enough space to move around in the house a little. Of course I'm exagerating a bit but you can imagine how much space that many creels takes up. I'll list a few creels today and more periodically as my schedule permits. EXCELLENT LEATHERED SPLIT BAMBOO BASKET POCKETED CREEL
Here's an excellent condition clean leathered split Bamboo basket creel with front pocket. The basket is in great shape with no breakage. This is a very unusual basket- it's extremely strong and according to a catalog listing I found is made of split Bamboo. It's much heavier duty than the normal split willow creel and I'm sure it's nearly indestructable. I've seen maybe 6 of these over the years and have never seen one with any basket breakage. The leather is very thick cow hide and is all in nice shape as well with no cracking or chipping. The basket is what we would normally describe as a low boy style. These were made in the mid to late 40's and I'm including a scan of the 1948 catalog page I found them in. It includes a nice tooled cow hide shoulder strap. It's about 16 1/2 inches wide and has a curved ... moreback to fit the hip. Would make a fine display piece or a fine creel to use. Rare creel for the collector. EXCELLENT MCMONIES MODEL 6 LEATHERED SPLIT WILLOW BASKET CREEL
Here's an Excellent clean McMonies size 6 leathered split willow basket creel. These McMonies creels were beautifully leathered with heavy embossed cow hide leather- sumptuously bound like fine luggage. The company was here in Portland. Oregon and they were in direct competition with George Lawrence company and John Clark Saddlery and several others for the creel market which accounts for the excellent quality of their work. It has some slight basket breakage but only on the board on the basket bottom. The rest of the basket is perfect and retains most of it's original brown paint. It measures about 17 1/4 inches at it's widest point and is one of the largest I have seen. It's solid and sound and the leather is nice and clean and flexible all around. Has a very nice and complete matching shoulder strap. This particular example ... morewas probably made to be wholesaled and does not have standard McMonies mark as was the case with about 20% of the McMonies creels I have seen. Would make a fine display item or could still be used. A really beautiful creel! I've been collecting creels for years and just recently realized I'm totally out of space to display them. I counted them a couple of weeks ago and find that I have over 400 of them. I guess I've got to move a few of them on down the road so my wife and I will have enough space to move around in the house a little. Vintage Fishing Creel made of Bark w/ Leather Straps in Excellent Condition
Wonderful American Indian bark creel. 12" x 9" x 9.5" tall. The condition is very good, the leather is soft and pliable, including the straps for the hinge. I believe that the design is by a New England area tribe. Origin and date of manufacture unknown, probably the 70's.

For your consideration is a split willow and leather trimmed fishing creel dating back to the 1930’s. It comes complete with rear handle and shoulder strap. This is a good usable item but it would best serve as a fishing lodge décor item. The creel measures approximately 14-1/2” across the bottom. 6” wide at base and 8” tall at the back. The condition of the creel is very good to near excellent. It shows a rich patina and has only one strand of willow that has broken. The thin leather straps that latch the lid to the creel and the straps that hold the shoulder strap on are old. Have some breakage and are bridle. EXCELLENT - LEATHERED AND EMBOSSED VOIGT CREEL - SEATTLE, WASHINGTON - RARE
Here's an excellent condition leathered and tooled Voigt split willow basket creel. The Voigt company has been in continuous operation since the 1840's and now has two factories. One in Seattle, Washington and the other in Sandpoint, Idaho. The company started out in Seattle, then moved to Alaska and then back to Seattle again. I believe these creels were made in the 30's possibly by the grandfather of the two brothers who now operate the two current branches of the company. Neither of the brothers knew about the creel production till a couple of us creel collectors started researching the creels we had found. The creels that have turned up so far vary a bit in construction but all have some characteristics that set them apart from all other makers. The stitching on the diagonal leather on the front of the creels serves two purposes- ... moreit holds the leather down but is also very decorative and adds much to the character of the creels. The creels all use the same running"S" tooling in the leather. All have half the lid covered in leather but the leather trimming of the baskets varies quite a bit. Some have leather trim around the basket rim and some do not. The girdling leather that goes from the top middle down, around and up to the hinge leather in back is present in some but stops at the bottom back of the basket on others. I've taken a close up pic of the way the hanging strap(handle) is attached to the hinge leather. This method is unique to Voigt creels. This creel is not marked but I have included a pic of a marked one from my collection clearly showing the mark and the hanging strap attachment. So far I know of about 20 Voigt creels and I know of only three that were marked. Here's your chance to own a rare creel from a relatively unknown maker- and one in super condition. This one is Buck Stitched(stitched with buckskin) as was most often the case with these creels and as such is virtually indestructable. This is a beautiful example of a scarce creel! EXCELLENT LARGE KENNS CREEL- PORTLAND, OREGON MAKER - RARE
Here's an Excellent condition leathered KENNS Split Willow basket creel. Kenn McKeeman was an itinerant leather worker in and around Portland. Oregon. I don't think he ever worked for any of the Large saddleries like Lawrence or McMonies but scraped out a living making things of leather and selling them himslf. I was told he had a drinking problem which made him unemployable in the eyes of anyone who might think of hiring him. His leathered creels and his duck straps were very high quality made with very thick full grain cow hide. As Portland creel makers go his creels are among the rarest. This one measures a nice full 15 inches at its widest point and comes with a matching padded cow hide leather shoulder strap also marked KENNS. There is also an unusual McKeeman marking that I haven't seen before"K.G. McKeeman Leather ... moreMfg. that appears on the shoulder strap. It was probably made in the late 50's or so. Vintage Belgium Whole Willow Fishing Creel w/Leather Harness~Excellent!
Here is a Genuine Vintage Belgium made creel. Stamped"Belgium" on the bottom. A sturdy and well made classic creel using whole willow, as shown in the collectors book"The Art of the Creel" This example measures 13 inches along the bottom, back height 9 inches, and front 6 1/2 inches. Creel lid has the distinctive antique sliding wood closure. It is intact and in excellent condition and includes the leather harness with green canvas strap. This is from my own private collection. Vintage 1950's ORVIS Whole Wicker Fishing Creel with Leather Harness~Excellent!
Vintage mid-20th century fishing creel that was produced exclusively for the famous Sporting Goods Company in Vermont"Orvis" This whole wicker. Center hole creel was in their 1950's catalog. It retains all its original wicker construction, lid hinges and front leather closing strap. It does have a leather and canvas harness found with it. Harnesses were"after market" purchases as an accessory item. The closing strap and buckle are still intact but leather shows wear. This creel model can be seen in the collectors book"The Art of the Creel" The creel has original Makers Stamp No. P9871 on bottom and behind leather strap. It measures approximately 14" across, 6 1/2" front to back and 8 1/2" high. It has a beautiful woven"overlap" top lid design with a turn of the century center hole ... moreconfiguration. EXCELLENT Antique 1900s Vintage FLY FISHING Handmade CREEL Splint Basket, AAFA- EXCELLENT Antique 1900s Vintage FLY FISHING Handmade CREEL Splint Basket- very good to excellent vintage antique condition- circa early 1900s to 1940s. It is just the way you love to find your creels or baskets- with a nice natural light original patina achieved only through age and use. It is a really nicely made artisan creel-basket- we have had a few of these in our many years of business- this is a really nice one and in wonderful lightly used condition. It measures approx 11.25" wide and approx 8" tall and approx 6.75" depth. The lidded top is attached to the bottom via splint. The splint that is used to secure the top to the bottom is left slightly unfinished or just in a natural type edge or end- see photos to see what we are describing here. ... moreIt has great splints and looks to be no breaks in the splints. There is no fastener in the front top- to bottom- don't know if this is meant to be that way- it has a nice Adirondack or Rustic look.
