The creel is not maker marked but judging from the style. Materials and craftsmanship it most likely dates to the last quarter of the 19th century to the first quarter of the 20th century. The creel features a wonderful large body that can best be described as ½ oval shaped. The creel is entirely hand made and the condition is very nice and especially so when considering the material and the age. The lid is missing one of it's hinges and moves rather tightly on the remaining one. There are three or four areas where there are minor breaks, most are shown in close-up below. The straps are no longer with the creel. The creel is also quite large measuring app. 11" in height be 10" in depth and 12" in app. width. We have included images below of all the sides plus the top and bottom so you can see first hand how truly unusual the design is. Antique Fishing Creel Split Willow Basket with Canvas & Leather Shoulder Strap
This is a nice old willow woven creel for it's age. Made in England with a brass decoration on lid& leather string closure with tongue part of latch strap is missing. Hinge is held on by shoe strings and some willow wrapping. Back bone of hinge is broken and piece is included, see photos. There is a dent on the front where willow is damaged and one bone is snapped yet there. The rest of the basket is in good condition and can be rebuilt. Fly fishing Creel is 11.5" long 4.25" wide 7" deep at back and 5" deep in front. Lid is 5.5" wide and 10" long. Leather and canvas shoulder strap is in great condition with an extra leather strap with a clip on one end. Please see all photos for condition before buying this item. This is not one of those cheesy foreign made creels by looking at the quality wicker weave and the well done and supple leather hinge. The canvas shoulder strap may be a custom addition and works excellent. The wicker weave has no broken or damaged parts and overall this creel appears in excellent. Vintage Creel Fly Fishing Wicker Weave Leather Basket Shoulder Strap & Ruler
Up for auction is an early wicker(split willow) weave fly fisherman's fishing creel basket. Complete with original working shoulder straps and leather carry handle. Condition: Shows years of wear and use with wonderful old Patina. No holes. There is dried splitting or small tears on the 2 side edges of the leather holding the cover on. The leather strap for closing is there but the buckle or snap for keeping it closed is missing. The 2 small tie leather straps on the inside cover are broken and the cover closes crooked sometimes. No holes or breaks in the wicker weave on top. Sides, back or bottom. A few broken weaves or splits found only on the inside of cover. The leather carry handle is strong and fastened on very well. It does shows some loose stitches on the sides showing the weave rope inside. All giving this fishing creel plenty ... moreof old character) Please see all pictures for accurate condition(using close up) and ask any questions before bidding. Measures approximately 8" tall with handle. 13" wide on bottom and top is about 5 1/2" wide. Selling exactly As is and As found over 40 some years ago from an old Adirondack Cabin in Bolton Landing. THIS IS A VERY GOOD FIND: A VINTAGE WICKER CREEL BASKET. IT STILL HAS THE ORIGINAL LEATHER STRAPS FOR THE WAIST AND SHOULDER. THERE IS ADDITIONAL LEATHER ON THE BASKET. SOME AS A HINGE, SOME ON THE BACK, SOME AROUND THE RIM. THERE IS SOME EXTRA ADDED STITCHING TO HOLD THE LEATHER IN PLACE ON THE RIM. PART OF THE LATCH STRAP IS MISSING. WHEN I FOUND THIS, A WIRE WAS USED TO FASTEN THE CLASP. I TOOK IT OFF. OVERALL. THIS IS A REALLY AMAZING COLLECTOR'S PIECE. IT WAS FOUND IN PA. AT AN ESTATE SALE CLOSE TO BEDFORD, PA.
