The small handle on the back is missing. The lid doesn't close completely. There are some missing stitches on the leather. Vintage Leather Reinforced Wicker Trout Fishing Creel made in British Hong Kong
Up for bids is a very nice vintage leather reinforced wicker trout fishing creel as pictured made in British Hong Kong. The creel stands 9" high in the back at the top of the lid and tapers to 7 1/2" in the front at the top of the lid. It measures 14" long by 6" wide across the bottom. The very fine thread the looped handle on the top back was sewed together with has deteriorated with age exposing the wicker on the inside as seen in the last two pictures. This would probably be an easy fix for someone who works with leather. Otherwise the creel is in very nice condition with just light wear to the leather. This vintage creel is made of wicker and leather. It looks like it has never been used for fishing. It measures about 10" from bottom to top of handle) x 14 1/2" long) x 6" wide) It has a looped handle on the back that is leather(it has no cracks or breaks) There is no shoulder strap. It is in excellent shape, with no holes, tears or missing parts. there is a very little wear on the left corner leather patch right at the tip of the corner(see photo) The measuring area printed on the top is visible and"Made in British Hong Kong" is right below this area. Here is a nice old fishing creel fresh from a Wyoming estate. Inside are several unopened(and a couple open) packs of snelled hooks and 11 flies still on the card. Never used. I'll send those along with the creel. I believe this is one of the British Hong Kong made creels which I've seen before; nicely woven with leather fittings and a shoulder strap with the cross-body harness all intact. We dressed the leather parts with mink oil to restore some softness to the leather; this poor thing has been in someone's storage shed for a long while. Everything looks good; the front pouch flap is still quite stiff but has a buckle closure and can be used. The creel is 16 1/2" long. 6" high at the front, rising to 7" at the back. This is an old used British Hong Kong Wicker Fishing Creel. It has leather trim and has a leather shoulder strap. The creel has a ruler printed on the leather along the top. I can see what looks like?British"Hong Kong" see photos) The ruler imprint has mostly worn off. The lid is approx 12 1/2" L and 6 1/2" wide across the middle. The back is approx 8 1/2" high from the middle of the bottom back to top of leather on lid. The inside basket depth is approx 8" from the middle of the bottom of back of basket to top edge of wicker. The bottom of the basket is approx 15 3/4"L and 5 1/2" wide across the middle of the bottom. The wicker has wear with some breaks in the wicker on the lid and the leather has wear and is brittle from age. The leather on the handle has lots of wear(see photos) The front buckle ... morelooks like it was repaired and the shoulder strap is sewn together on the inside(see photos) The wicker body of the creel has come loose from the bottom and is wired on both sides(see photos) There are a few more cracks as well(see photos) The leather trim has wear and needs conditioning as does the strap. Today for your consideration is a wonderful old vintage fishing creel that has been in our family forever. I believe it came into our family in the 1940'60s. I have always kept my families sea shells in it but originally was used for a fisherman. Thick strong& solid. No breaks in wicker& a few threads maybe off in the thick old leather but it too is strong& solid. Old measure on top to see how long your fish was& marked Made in British Hong Kong. One corner has slight wear to leather. Other corner has a water stain. It is approx. 16" across at the bottom by 10" tall counting the leather handle& approx. 7" deep. Perfect for decorating, a cabin or a beach cottage or even that man cave. Looks great in a office. It is still very functional& could be used once again to collect sea shells or catch fish! ... moreOver all these years we lost the long shoulder strap but replacement ones can be found on eBay.
