The leather does have some dark marks and is cracked in several places. Please check out the photos. The buckle over the top will not hold since leather can been cut short. The top wants to stay open but I think can be trained to stay closed again. The handle has significant wear and the leather has worn off in spots. I have for sale a vintage Fishing Creel. I have found similar examples of this creel sold by Horrocks Ibbotson Co. I believe it was made in Hong Kong. Japan. It is in used but still very good usable or decorative condition with no breaks in the weaving that I can see. The fish shape latch is complete with some rusting on the metal. The creel measures 14" across at the base and 9 3/4" across the top. All in all a very well made fishing creel. If anyone has anymore information on this basket I would be glad to add it to the description. I use USPS Priority Mail in the USA so the cost to ship will be a flat rate $6.00. VINTAGE FISH CREEL AND OTHER CANVAS BAGS
Up for auction is a Vintage Canvas unnamed Creel. Size is approx. 10 X 12 inches. It has a canvas strap sewn to the bag and is in very good shape. There are two zippers on the bag. The one on top for the fish compartment and one on the side for the weatherproof pocket. The plastic liner in in very good shape and I could not find any weather rot or cracks in it. Both zippers work well. The wire mesh underneath is totally intact and I could not find any holes in it. Even the leather type binding on top is not cracked or broken. The bag is dirty but in very good condition for it's age. On the other bags there are two have moon pouches that are 4 X 5 1/2 inches in the closed position. There are two cotton pads on one side of the inside pouch. They close with velcro so they can't be that old. The darker canvas bag looks military but has ... moreno numbers on it. Size of the bag is 7 1/2 X 9 inches appox. It has a button closure on the flap. The lighter colored bag has a drawstring for a closure and is 9 X 11 inches approx. Creel looks to have been used very little. Inside is very clean. Leather straps are solid and supple but could stand to be oiled. Lid is tied on with heavy cord, apparently the original owner didn't care for the original set up. Doesn't take away from the creel, gives it a folky look. The coolest thing about it is the clasp is actually shaped like a trout! Never seen one done like this before, very nice accent. Here is a truly spectacular vintage creel most likely made in Japan in the late 1940's or early 1950's. The pictures do not do this creel justice. It is in remarkably clean condition with only a few small exceptions. The first is that there appears to be a small. Wicker loop missing at the far left of the lid. you really have to study it to notice it. The second is the leather hinges are of two colors- one light and one dark brown- They appear to be original and may have been a signature feature of the craftsman- not sure. The actual use of this basket is unknown. However, due to the trap mechanism see photo 9, it appears it was for life creatures. It could have been for butterflies, all I know. The basket is in excellent condition and has no breakage and a nice tight weave. The opening still has it's original plastic spring flap in perfect working order.embossed on it is writing that reads"Ron-Mar. Ashland Maine" The leather/canvas straps are in great condition with no cracking and the buckles and latch are in fine working condition. It also has a very unique metal/leather Fish latch.please see pictures! Also included is a Old Pal brand Green Bait Box that appears never to have been used. Not exactly sure of the age of this creel, but I discovered it on a basement shelf in Upper Michigan among other vintage fishing gear.both items appear to have been purchased but never used, they have ... morejust been sitting on a shelf all these years collecting some dust. This is a wicker fishing basket with a flat back and carrying strap. This basket has not been used. The carrying strap is like new. The basket is in good condition with only one broken piece of wicker that I can find and that is under the leather strap the holds the lid on. The measurements are approximately 14 1/2" tall x 11" wide. This is the measurement taken on the flat back and across the side. This basket would make a great fish holder or decorative piece.
