Vintage 1800's Large Bait Box or Metal Fishing Creel or Tackle Box for Lures
Vintage. Very unique, rustic metal bait box or creel. I have been told this is probably from the late 1800's and is possibly English. There is no name or manufacturers mark that I have been able to find. I do know this a very well made, old metal box probably used for live bait or it could have been used as a trout creel or could have carried fishing lures. The hinged lid on the top works very well as does the large comfortable handle. There are no holes in the unit, but it does have some marks and a few dents in the metal. Approx size is 16" long x 8" wide x 13" to the top of the handle(the box itself is about 8" tall) Weight of the box is approx 4.7 Lbs. Very unique and I have never seen another like this.

Solid& sturdy. The basket closure strap is a fish head& body. The head has'PAT 66289' on it. There are a few broken strands/connectors. That hold the lid on to its rim, see pictures. Also a few broken strands/connectors. On the basket part, holding the basket to the rim. The 2 leather straps holding the lid to the basket are good. The basket weveing is very tight and strong. It comes with leather straps and metal closer works well. Tail is off fish body but is included. As is all the tackle pictured. This vintage Fisherman's Creel is made of wicker and has a leather/metal closing fish strap and leather hinges. The condition is excellent. There are no breaks in the wicker and the leather strap and hinges are also in great shape. This basket does not have a strap. The fish head is a little dull but I did not want to clean it in fear that I would ruin it. It measures 13" across the bottom base. 10" across the top by 5" wide, about 6 1/2" tall in back and 5" tall in front. Very Rare H. L. Platt Creel, 1891-92 on cover of Fishing Tackle Collectors Guide
The attached is a superb example of the earliest English patent for a fishing creel in Great Britain by Harry Lewis Platt made between 1891 and 1892. Mr. Platt sold these creels at his London store featuring fine guns and tackle. It is in excellent condition with lunch tray. Side leather flap for trout, original strap, brass hinges, and all wicker in perfect condition. Along with the creel I am offering Graham Turner's book, Fishing Tackle A Collector's Guide that features this creel on its cover and detailed information inside.

I have found very few on the internet and have not been able to find out much about it. From what I have found I believe it to be English but can not be sure. The bottom is wicker with wood braces inside giving it a sturdy frame. It sits on four very small wooden feet. It has a tin tray in the top for storage as you can see in pictures. I have seen others which have a second wooden tray for tackle which this one did not come with or is missing. The top is particle board covered with a padded vinyl like material with tacks on the side as you can see in pictures.It is in very good condition overall with just a couple of minor splinters in the wicker as you can see in pictures. Vintage European Arca Fishing Unit Seat Tackle Creel Wood & Wicker As Found EUC
Excellent condition vintage"Arca" European fishing unit- seat. Tackle box, creel, storage. Item is in"as found" condition, and includes all of the gear that is inside the unit. Arca I was told(at purchase) is a UK brand, but all of the gear in the tackle box on top is written in French- could be from France or from Canada. I purchased 13+ years ago at a high end antique show in Kohler WI- the seller was from Illinois(Pat Miller from Solid Brass Antiques out of Naperville, IL- the card is still in the creel) All original, original leather strap, has the chain that holds the top tackle box section open. Wicker is in excellent condition- about 4 spots where the wicker is either missing(1-inch or less) or loose- you can see from the photos it is not noticeable. Bottom is clean, legs are good. Metal creel inside, lower storage ... moresection has two old bottles with caps for worms(the bottles have holes in the top) old hand auger, old heavy pliers that has a screw driver on one end of the handle and an awl on the other, two fish holders(I think) these are showing some rust/age. A folded wooden metric tape measure is in the metal creel section. Loads of small gear in the tackle section, some from Arca- packets of hooks, some red dye, something in a tube, lots of fishing line, twine, the language on the packages is French. Estimated circa 1940's-60's- the body is made of natural wicker, unpainted- but the stripes of black and red that run through are more translucent- could be a plastic material. The leather strap buckles on the bottom underneath and is in very good condition. Measures 14 inches tall. 14 inches wide and 10 inches deep. Strap drop is 15 inches and is adjustable on the bottom(has a buckle like a belt) Weighs about 12 pounds. I HAVE THE ORIGINAL KEY FOR THE LOWER STORAGE AREA LOCK- AND IT WORKS! Pet free. Although the basket isn't marked I believe it is from Japan, ca 1930, the scarce Quinn tackle box top was made by Crest mfg. of Ohio. It isn't perfect, it could use a new strap, some minor wicker loss, it has the tight weaving you look for in a quality creel. Early Wicker Fishing Creel Leather Trim ~ RARE Signed National Tackle
Early weave wicker with great old tag.leather handle is someone's add on to help carry this old piece. The leather back part where the ruler is on is loose and tearing. As well the old leather pouch is gone. The leather binding on the creel is nice and strong. The hinges have been replaced at some point. The early wicker has a couple of minor issues but for its age it's nice. Tight and strong! This old creel is 15" across 8" in height and about 7 3/8" in depth. Rare vintage Hirsch Weis( founder white stage 1929) KOOLAIRE Heavy canvas fish creel. Hirsch and Weis made canvas sails for deep water sailing ships and canvas tents starting in the late 1800's. Its apparent they used the same high quality standards when making their fishing creel's. Creel is 13" wide. 9" tall, 5" deep at bottom tapering to 3" at the top. Creel has an adjustable shoulder strap. Side pocket with heavy duty zipper, two stainless tie off rings and a stainless hook buckle type catch. Both the large side pocket and the fish holding area are lined with a thick clear vinyl. There is also a thick clear vinyl flap on the back of the creel. This is a heavy stiff rugged creel. Eurofish" This label is starting to peel on the right side. The wood/laminate behind this label is beginning to peel and a small piece is broken. The wood frame is covered with green, woven vinyl wicker. There is an adjustable leather strap/handle which goes around the box. The green vinyl top/seat has a small tear at each corner.
