OUTSTANDING FORM& CONDITION LATE 19th EARLY 20th CENTURY HAND WOVEN ODDLY SHAPED FISHING CREEL This offering is for an unusual and early hand woven wicker fishing creel. The creel is not maker marked but judging from the style. Materials and craftsmanship it most likely dates to the last quarter of the 19th century to the first quarter of the 20th century. The creel features a wonderful large body that can best be described as ½ oval shaped. The creel is entirely hand made and the condition is very nice and especially so when considering the material and the age. The lid is missing one of it's hinges and moves rather tightly on the remaining one. There are three or four areas where there are minor breaks, most are shown in close-up below. LARGE VINTAGE HAND WOVEN FISHING CREEL This old fish basket simply oozes patina and rustic charm. Came from the estate of an elderly woman whose husband was a fisherman. I believe those are his initials faintly visible on the top of the creel lid. The leather strap is broken. The lid locks by sliding the hand carved wooden latch into a leather loop. Split willow creel using the French weave technique. It has its original leather/metal closing strap/clasp and strap. This old creel is in good condition considering its age. It is approximately 12 inches wide at the base. 9 inches wide at the top, 5 inches deep and 7 inches high at the back. This creel was most likely sized for a woman/child. There is wonderful provenance in the hand written note found in the creel. Which states that the creel was used by Tom Moore of Saco Maine while fishing with his Grandfather in the 1930s. This note. I believe, was written later to document the history of the creel. This vintage creel has been well used and therefore has some condition issues consistent ... morewith age. This creel is a center hole design. And the leather strap is marked JTL or JLT if read as a monogram. It was well made, but has some minor issues. There is no shoulder strap, the clasp strap is broken, and the two small straps that hold the top on are missing. Looking at the weaves, they are in good shape. Creel measures about 11" wide x 7" tall and 5" deep. With some work, this could be a nice prize in your collection!

Very nice basketry work possibly woven by Mi'kmaq Native Indians/ First Nations as this creel was found in Nova Scotia. This creel is in excellent condition with only the leather latch being replaced(can easily be refixed with a piece of older leather) Beautiful Leather strap that is completely intact. Very interesting lid with fish hole and fish measurement markings and initials J.R.S. The creel measures approximately 15 inches in length. 7.5 inches wide, and 9 inches high; a most impressive size. On my last treasure hunt. I was fortunate enough to come across this wonderful old wicker creel. It measures 12" long x 10" wide by 10.5" tall. This item is in completely original condition with minimal damage to the wicker. I have shown pictures of all sides/bottom. It has wire mesh around the front and part of the sides with metal fish attached to it. Leather closures and a thick heavy shoulder strap. As I do not usually sell fishing related items.and in fact have never sold a creel before, I cannot offer any information about this beauty or give any history to it. Antique Vintage Fly Fishing Creel Wicker Hand Woven Basket from Idaho

Utah digging through the things he had collected for over 75 years and I remembered a lot of them when I was a boy. We had a cabin on the Salmon River that he went to to get away from the turmoil of the world. I came across this special find, an antique/vintage fishing creel wicker and leather basket. I've included many pictures so you can see the good condition this piece is in. I have not done anything to it as far as cleaning, etc. This is exactly as I found it.
